  • Part 3 of our grass care video is taking a look at the ways we can collect grass, hay and straw up off the field. From small square to large square balers, round balers and forage wagons or even the use of a big forage harvester to collect grass. This video covers all the fine points of making bales or collecting loose material in Farming Simulator 22.

    I honestly think producing grass silage with a baler might actually be the best way to make money early on. You only need to seed grass once per field. You only need to fertilize it once. You can harvest it three times per year if you play with seasons on. You don't need an expansive harvester like you basically need for everything else. And it is easy to transport in large amounts even with smaller tractors (you can actually transport around 120,000 to 140,000 liters on that 24 bale trailer depending on the size of the bales).
    All you need is to fully prepare a field once (you might even loan the necessary machines for that) and then you only need a mower (preferable one that already swathes, like the crossflow), a baler with a wrapper unit like the impress 185, the bale trailer with auto-pickup and a weeder or the grassland roller.
    Yes, other crop might lead to a higher profit per acre, but they take a lot longer to actually get to that profit. Sugarcane or potatoes have a very small harvest width even with the biggest machines you can buy and you have to plow the field after every potato harvest. Other crop like wheat or soybeans just can't compete at all. So the ration of real playtime to profit of silage bales should be hard to beat with any other crop.

    I may be in the minority but I love round bailing. sometimes I will square bale my straw, just because, in real life I have never seen a round bale of straw. I also never use auto unload, I find I am often baling on a hill, so I'll need to stop and place the bale somewhere safe, or it will roll, into the street, off a cliff or into deep forest. I'd say if you want bale without stopping, or use an auto loader, use square bales. If you enjoy manual stacking with front loaders, and don't mind slowing down a bit to unload your bales, the round bales tend to be more fun..though that won't be for everyone, for sure.

      I love how different places where people live affect these experiences, I'm gonna assume you're from the United States since you only see square bales, for me living in Germany square bales are actually a rare attraction to see, love it when the big Farmer from the area does them!

      @@y33t23 Yea, I am pretty much in the middle of the US. We mostly have square bales of straw, and round bales of hay. though a lot of horse people buy small square bales, for feed.

    Regarding partial bales, I believe it now depends on the percentage. So, if less than 50% grass is in the baler and then you switch to hay, the bale will be hay. If more than 50% of the bale is straw and you change to grass, the bale will be grass. I haven't specifically tested but I believe this is the behavior I have seen in game.

    The mixed content of a baler is troublesome - back in FS17 the produced bale was the last thing you put in it, in FS19 the produced bale was the first thing you put in it, and now in FS22 we're back to how FS17 did it. I kind of prefer the FS22 way, I've just cut hay so I would kind of like all the bales produced to be hay - in FS19 it was annoying to get the first bale as the previous thing you did, then all the rest as what you wanted. So in FS19 I used to reset the baler in order to clean it out of any partial bale content.

    My problem with round balers isn't the start and stop, it is chasing the bales all over the field when they decide to roll.

      @TheGerudan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can add the Pottinger Impress 125 FC Pro (official Giants Mod) that puts the bales on their flat side when it drops them.

      @@TheGerudan Thanks, I just recently saw that. I am not convinced that there are any advantages to using round bales though, although this one does get away with using a smaller tractor. More and more, I am starting to lean towards the forage wagon, especially now that Stevie's silos have come out.

    • @TheGerudan
      @TheGerudan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimjasutis5046 It probably depends on how far you into the game by now and how much money you have available. Making silage through wrapped bales seems to be a pretty good way to get going without paying 600k or more for any sort of harvester.
      And transporting bales is pretty good. 24 bales with 3000 liters or more is pretty much unbeatable with any normal trailer.

    • @jimjasutis5046

      @@TheGerudan Transporting bales is pretty easy, storing them is another thing. As you have more and more bales, they seem to cause problems you don't see with bulk storage. One thing I need to test is, I saw it reported that a silage bunker actually converts the grass into silage in less time than the wrapped bales do. Not sure but I want to check it out.

      @@jimjasutis5046 Yeah, there seem to be a few bugs with bales. One seems to be, that bales start to appear in the shop view for..whatever reasons.

      Well your going to kind of know how to collect the grass or hay or straw as well as how to convert grass to hay. This process does involve a good combo of machines.
