    In the early 90’s I was a US submariner and a bunch of us where Ironman watches with the indigo backlight. They were perfect for checking the time when the control room was rigged red for periscope depth. In fact, so many of us wore them that one of my shipmate’s told his wife about it, and since she worked in PR she pitched it to timex. A few months later they ran full page ads of a bunch of guys standing on a submarine in the dark with their wrists glowing blue. I remember the copy being super cringy (something about “lights out drills”) but it was still pretty cool.

    I recently bought the Ironman for $50 Canadian; I've had a GW-5000u for quite some time. The Timex's buttons are way easier to use. I don't love the skinny fonts, but the Timex dial is surprisingly gorgeous to look at. The screen background is cleaner, the numbers are WAY bigger. For just seeing the time while you're in the gym (what I use the Timex for), Timex wins hands down. I don't love the Timex band as much as you; it's a very hard plastic that's not very comfy. I do like the keeper though. There's something attractive about the Timex that you can't see in a TH-cam video... it has a very interesting depth to the dial, while the Casio's is one-dimensional and shallow. The Casio looks a lot like it's 80's ancestor; the Timex has evolved into something completely different. When I bought the Ironman, I just wanted something for the gym that I could sweat all over, allow to get bumped, and not care about too much, because it didn't cost me anything. But I've been surprised by how much I like it... they did a really great job of creating a very nice looking and super usable beater watch. I'd recommend it without hesitation. In Canada, the Casio 5600 is also more than twice the cost of the Ironman, which would be a big factor in making a recommendation.
    Packaging is a strange category. You throw it away 2 minutes after you buy the watch. Who cares if it's in a chest or a paper bag?
    Great video about real world watches as always!! 🧡🔥⌚ And best voice on TH-cam!

    Good job Jody, but i think you missed a huge part of the backlight. The Ironman gets a 10 for backlight due to night mode! Hold down the light button for 3 seconds and a little crescent moon shows up. While in night mode a push of any button turns on the Indiglo for 3 seconds. The G Shock light is ok, but try to change your alarm or timer settings in the dark. It's a pain with the G Shock, but super easy with the Timex night mode. I don’t know how so many reviews that mention Indiglo skip over night mode. Sometimes I have to work in the dark. Night mode is the reason I keep buying Ironman watches even though i have 3 solar G Shocks with Multiband 6. I always wear an Ironman to work. I'm wearing the retro colored one from your video right now. I have a blacked out one arriving from Amazon tomorrow.

    My very first watch when I was 12yo was the Timex Iron Man, the *EXACT* one you showed in the old advert. I was just clearing out old boxes and found it (dead of course), it is beaten to hell the buttons on the front are cracked but I stuck a battery and wouldn't you know, it works, it runs better than I do for its age. I'm keeping it for nostalgia of course, but nowadays I wear one of my multiple G-Squares almost on the daily. This was a *Great* comparison, thank you.

    They updated that GShock model to have an LED, among other upgrades. I think it's worth seeking out over the older model featured here if someone wanted to get one. Then again, there's also a model exactly like that but with solar charging that's even better too!

I could go to Kenya, Mongolia, India, Russia, Morrocco, and Bolivia. And I would easily find people (as in not watch ⌚ nerds like us) who know both Casio and G-Shock. Most wouldn't have even heard of Timex. Timex is like Texas Instruments calculators. Mostly known in the US. Not in the majority of the world. The majority of the world grows up using Casio calculators in school and has never even heard of Texas Instruments. Same applies to Timex.

    I guess I wouldn't be super thrilled about the added thickness of the Ironman, but the extra visibility, the fact the side pushers aren't as hard to access, and the better backlight would see me getting the Timex out of these two. If they had a solar variant I'd get one yesterday, maybe they'll get there soon as they've been rolling out more and more solar powered models, one can only hope.
    And back on that indiglo backlight, the fact you can get it to trigger when you press the buttons is just such a great feature in my mind, I seriously wonder why the rest of the industry hasn't tried to copy that functionality.
    If any of my squares/protreks/or edifices had that feature, I might never take them off.

    I think the Casio is undeniably a better watch and don't have much of a problem with that, although I really think the branding category needs some clarity. Maybe it's a regional thing and I'm out of line, but the number of Timex watches in this world is outrageous. Even when I was a kid (I'm 46 now) every single old guy wore a Timex and it's not much different now. Now these old non-watch guys have sock drawers or night stands full of old Timex watches from every period of their life. Every TV show back in the black and white TV days were sponsored by Timex. Even in the 80s, me and my friends mostly had a Timex model. (although there were a few casios around that we might have honestly liked more) So I guess it depends on how you're looking at it. If it's digital vs digital, I get it. But if it's a brand-wide, real-world popularity contest and we're looking at the whole history, it's truly not even close.
    That all being said, yeah. The Casio is totally better.

    • @marcelovasconcellos6067
      @marcelovasconcellos6067 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes very regional. I’d like a Timex, I really would, I’m of the age that the Ironman was really desirable in my late teens to early 20s. But they were and still are so expensive. Result even now, when I get the itch, I go and check an Ironman’s price and for the money there always are 3 or 4 better priced Gs, even of the more modern and feature rich variety. Growing up lots of us had Casios, Timex were few and far between. And the older folk here didn’t have Timex either. My sensation is the opposite of yours, Casio is ubiquitous and worldwide, Timex is heavy in some markets, rare as hen’s teeth in others.

    • @daveglarner2138
      @daveglarner2138 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@marcelovasconcellos6067 That's interesting to think about. I get it though, and absolutely believe you. I think it's easy to get caught up in your own life experience and not understand how it is elsewhere. Especially back then before the Internet started tying us together. I had the Timex watches because they WERE the less expensive ones.......with the exception of the f91w anyway. We'd wear them in the yard at recess, pressing buttons that made beeping sounds and pretend we could control the planes that flew by with them.

    To be honest, though I suspected (correctly) which watch was going to cross the finish line first, I was really routing for the Timex. I think I, personally, would have rated the Timex higher in the "Brand " category by a point at least. Growing up in the 70's, Timex was THE affordable watch. My first watch as a boy was, in fact, a navy blue dialed Timex hand winder, similar in appearance to every other watch I had, up until that point, ever seen. The TV commercials were ubiquitous, the tag line still resonates in the zeitgeist 40 years later, and, as a bonus, the brand seems to be having a bit of a mini Renaissance lately while G-Shock is releasing grotesquely expensive special editions of watches they had in their catalog for decades.
    Having said that, though, the 5600 is just a better looking accessory than the Ironman, in my opinion, at least.

I’m not sure the button below the face is actually two separate buttons - I just press in the middle to start and record splits as I run. I also like that the two times zones can be set to 12 or 24 hours independently. You can also choose if the larger display is used for elapsed time or split time in the Chrono. Neither of my g-shock squares (DW5600E & GW-M5610U) came in the G-shock tin. 🤷🏾‍♂️😤 Is the packaging hit or miss, or is there something that I’m missing?

    Absolutely incredible that your review came out just the day after I had pressed the "purchase" button for the Timex Ironman. I must say, having owned 3 G Shocks, this Timex gave me something very different - some very well executed details. I like how they have more variations of surface finishing. My only wish is that Timex do solar-powered Ironman watches; only then would they truly stand all in a crowd of G-Shocks.

    But ... Is the 5600 the right watch to compare to the IronMan?
    They are quite different types of watches.

    HOW can you gove the band-round to Timex?? There are tons of alternatives to the square. Nato -adaptors, combi-branclets... Seriously, what.

    Amusingly if you spend much more $200~ US to get a JDM GW-S5600U it comes in a box much like the timex only without the crstal stand just in a paper box in a plastic bag..lol (new DW-5600UE (LED) models also come in a paper box w/ stand like the timex.. got a 5600UE for $25 from woot no more tin now apparently.....No contest the G-Shock all day... for a simple reason, does what it needs to do and looks better (imho) .. The G shock strap is very comfortable.. or you can spent $5~ and get nato strap adapters and use any 22mm NATO.... I have 8" wrists the DW5600 looks a bit wee on my wrist so I never really hook /bang it on anything (besides brush riding MTB?) .. Unless you are running / doing iron man competitions I see no reason to pick the Timex.. the G-Shock is just simply the "cooler" watch the more manly looking watch and is just indestructible... I have a decade plus old DW5600 I have worn mountain biking for whole time I've owned it ... other than a few minor crystal scratches (only show in certain light) it is still nearly as new (assuming I have taken a minute to wash all the dirt and dust off it.)

    What's the actual model number of the Timex? I clicked the Amazonia link in the doobly-doo, and the Ironman in that list is not the right one.

    I'm surprised how cool the Timex is. I'm 100% a G-SHOCK fanboy, but I gotta hand it to Timex, it was well thought out, and does capture the era. It's not as good as the G-SHOCK, but it's totally retro cool.

    I’ve wanted an Ironman simply because the old Timex factory in 30 mins away in Little Rock Arkansas. The Ironman was the last model made there. Even Bill Clinton wore won, perhaps for supporting local business.

    Casio all the way. Never heard of Timex until 1990's. I guess that's because we had more Japanese than American watches available locally.

    I often think aftermarket support is something worth considering, in which case Casio takes it. I know I can get onto eBay or Aliexpress and put a good quality OEM or 3rd party bezel and strap for a G-Shock but I’m not sure that’s the case for the Timex?

    Oh, Jody! You really botched this one. In any of the categories that matter, Timex clearly came out ahead. Double points for branding? A packaging category? And that toughness test is sus unless you do it yourself. I still love your channel though. :)

    The Casio packaging is actually hit or miss. You show a nice tin, however, recently I bought a much more expensive G-Shock as a gift for someone, expecting the tin, and I actually got basically the same box you got with the Timex. A smashed thin cardboard box, with a plastic stand. And this G was a solar, multi-band etc. G. So .... not sure if that rating is good.

    Its really a shame that Timex wasnt as popular in Asian countries as Casios and G-Shocks are. Mainly because its that much more expensive than the equivalent Casios, while having about the same brand recognition. I have to say Casio and G-Shock wins it for me, as the only thing broken in my casio collection is my oldest f91, and its because of an accident and even with that the module still runs, just with a cracked casing making its water resistance impossible. My Timex died on me after a few battery changes spanning 15 years for no apparent reason. Love the indiglo on Timexes tho, hope this current one lasts.

    I am a casio fan all the way, I love my gshocks, they’re my favorite watches. That being said timex watches in my experience always have much better bands than Casios. I personally love the other timex Ironman that has the more rounded case, it’s super comfortable. But I love casio, I just like putting them on aftermarket straps most of the time.
