DOING MORE WITH RLK

  • We all know that beautiful RLK RLK RLK RLK that Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Carmine Appice, Mitch Mitchell, Don Brewer et al. did so well. I remember it was one of the first things I saw a friend do on the drums that made me think, 'damn, I need to be able to do that'.
    Bonham & Walfredo Reyes Jr. inverting it was a wonderful take on it. But can we make it our own?
    This video series is going to take your 16th Note Triplet chops to a new level. We'll be combining RLK with other patterns to make something uniquely our own.
    This is a deep dive into RLK and all the potential options it has to offer. Are there some dynamic changes within that sticking that can bring out different patterns and melodies?
    This was a blast to make so I hope you enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions on it and thanks so much for watching.

    Killer lesson! I like how you’re using this concept with sextuplets. It’s great to hear them in more useful situations outside of 8th note’s triplets . Thank you!!!

    Great production, pal! Seen dynamic approach to RLK explained by Jojo Mayer quite long time ago, was him the one moved you to digging this further than "rock approach" so to speak?
    Also JP Bouvet talks a lot about this very topic and even launched a course - so, little compe here :)

    • @ferggriffindrums
      @ferggriffindrums  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man.
      Haven’t seen Jojo Mayer cover this no, although I would like to as I bet he smashes it! Do you know what DVD/video that’s from? I’d love to see it.
      I saw JP do a post on Instagram the other day about RLK in straight time but didn’t know he had a course on it in 16th Note Triplets?
      I don’t think there should ever be competition in education and will never try to compete with anyone. Everyone has a voice and we can always push ourselves further on the instrument by taking what’s come before and trying to develop it/make it our own. As you’ll see from most of my videos, I am always trying to play with dynamics in order to uncover new melodies as I think that’s such an important thing for us drummers!
      I think changing the dynamics up in pretty much all rudiments/patterns is essential to making great music. I think Jojo & JP are absolutely amazing drummers and love them both. I’d never try and detract from what they’ve done before.
      Hope that eradicates any suggestion of competition and thank you for your comment! I hope you enjoyed the video 🙏

      @@ferggriffindrums Hey, Ferg, thanks for your response! I totally respect the drummers who develop their own vocabulary, while I myself am very much dependent on other persons' approach. So yeah, totally agree about the dynamics in paradiddles, which brings them to whole another level of musicality. Wish I could put more time in doing it now.
      Yeah, here's JoJo's lecture where he elaborates on this topic (after the 9th minute):
      th-cam.com/video/9RHUN8Dgrns/w-d-xo.html
      That was actually the first time I've ever heard about this approach in terms of simple coordination patterns. So I was curious whether you have the same sources :)

  • @timbretrent113

    So although I am right handed I feel very much more comfortable doing LRK over RLK (thanks to me trying to mimic Bonzo). I assume I can simply invert it or?

    • @ferggriffindrums
      @ferggriffindrums  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely man! That’s really interesting that you find it easier playing LRK instead of RLK.
      RLK into LRK is always a wicked combination.
      I think yeah, exploring LRK, LrK, & lrK would be an awesome thing to do! Ultimately, as drummers we should try and muck with the dynamics of everything we play and see what we can make.
      Also, playing LRK into RLRLKK sounds to me like a sickkkk combination.
      Let me know how you get on & thanks for your comment! 🙏

      Totally understand, Dave. In actual fact, I don’t like this video at all and there is a lot I’m not happy with about it. Nonetheless, I learnt a lot from it. Please check out my later videos where I break things down in a better way. The double stroke roll video, for example, I break things down super slow! 🫡
