Diesel Hydraulic ~ Class 42 D832 'Onslaught'

- British Railways' (BR) Type 4 Warship class diesel-hydraulic locomotives were introduced in 1958. It was apparent at that time that the largest centre of expertise on diesel-hydraulic locomotives was in West Germany. The Western Region of British Railways negotiated a licence with German manufacturers to scale down the German Federal Railway's "V200" design to suit the smaller loading gauge of the British network, and to allow British manufacturers to construct the new locomotives. The resultant design bears a close resemblance, both cosmetically, and in the engineering employed, to the original V200 design.
Warship locomotives were divided into two batches: those built at BR's Swindon works were numbered in the series D800 to D832 and from D866 to D870,[1] had a maximum tractive effort of 52,400 pounds-force (233,000 N) and eventually became British Rail Class 42. 33 others, D833-865, were constructed by the North British Locomotive Company and became British Rail Class 43. They were allocated to Bristol Bath Road, Plymouth Laira, Newton Abbot and Old Oak Common. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

They look kind of chubby and innocent without the claws.. the quite-stubby nose in comparison to the 55 or 44-46 gives them some character.

I can sort of see why this was chosen as the most threatening character in the franchise. It kind of has that armoured train look to it and that it was known as the warship. Diesel 10 relations aside it's a nice looking locomotive.
I wouldn’t agree. A Peak or a 55 would be more fitting- the giant noses on them are damn imposing
@@bennickss They would probably do the job as well but I think they look a bit too sensible for a villain. The shape of this class is very unique and looks like it could lead an armoured train. I think the crew also wanted to vary the looks from D261. But I have to say the British diesels with the big noses are probably the best looking. Around the same level as the EMD bulldog nose units.

I'm not sure what sounds better: a Deltic engine, or a Warship engine. That low rpm rumble sounds wonderful.
I have ridden behind examples of both (D821 and 55009). They are both great in their own ways but the Deltic resonates and rumbles in your chest in a way that the Warship cannot match.
Class 42 Maybach and class 55 Napier run at around the same max 1500rpm.
all you need now is a giant claw!

Fun fact: Most UK diesels built in the 1960s feature the same horn, that being the Desilux. Some featured others (such as the 15 and 31 with Westinghouse horns, and the 47 with Hyson airchimes), but most featured the same. The reason they have different sounds is due to variations in fixing location, air compressor and screw tightness. For example, the high tone on a Class 52 squeaks, but this one does not.
Fun Fact:Diesel 10's original number was D814 before pinchy was installed on his roof.😁😁

D829 Magpie and D818 Glory were going to be preserved alongside Onslaught and Greyhound in the 1970s upon their withdrawal from service with BR, but those plans never happened and they were later scrapped. It would have been better if we had four Class 42 Warships in preservation instead of two:

Magpie
Onslaught
Greyhound

But that's illegal. It would make the locomotive too tall for the standard British loading gauge.
