    I love that you use Warhammer 40k and other popular culture as the framing tool for your videos, which at their core are lessons about various human organ systems. It's so much more fun to start with "How do you stop this big burly genetically-augmented surgically-enhanced chainsword-wielding Space Marine from getting poisoned?" rather than "How does the digestive system work?" Identifying the entire range of toxins could be possible with the help of a digital controller. Wouldn't some of these organs work better operating under the opposite directive? Instead of denying entry of toxins, only allowing entry of known good substances. In other words, the extra organ filters out everything, with only specific exceptions for the good stuff to get through. A bouncer for your stomach so to speak.

    • @NarutoMagicCyclops
      @NarutoMagicCyclops 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      The bypass system for the stomach could be further refined to seperate toxins and then allow nutrient rich substances to go straight to the digestive tract while the toxins/poisons are ejected, although such systems do exist often in the form of multistage filters by physically blocking harmful substances, so the system would require a liquid to carry the substance out of the filter, but understand that's bringing more complexity and failure points and an organ would likely need to be fully replaced once it's functions are either limited or lost, at least with filters you can easily replace an entire filtration system in seconds rather than having a several month rehab with a new organ that may or may not last long enough to be worthwhile.

    • @caninelupus8369
      @caninelupus8369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The preomnur also has a secondary function that's too specific to work like that. Basically, after the poison has been filtered out, it gets sent to the betchers gland, which let's a space marine spit the poison/acid in the enemies face. A useful ability since so many astartes refuse to wear helmets.

    • @notsoberoveranalyzer8264
      @notsoberoveranalyzer8264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn’t there then be an issue of overworking the organs on top of needing an entirely new system to remove them?
      My thinking just being, by only allowing good substances, it would lead to a massive build up of potent toxins. Which if there’s any sort of internal injury you’d become even more susceptible.
      PS: I have no idea what I’m talking about, just seemed like a pretty fun idea, and I’m just curious because things like your liver have gone through so many years of working in a particular way, making it work differently even if in theory it sounds easier wouldn’t it cost more energy to do

    Realistically such an organ would not be 100% effective as it’s portrayed in lore, but if it was possible to exist, I imagine it would still make a person a lot more resistant to toxic substances

    Excellent editing and research again! I'm really enjoying this series. While thinking about the problem of oxygen, I was reminded that a symptom of low 02 saturation levels is a decline in reasoning skills. This makes me wonder if Space Marines are somehow more tolerant to low 02, as that would explain some of the crazy conversations and decisions (ie. a complete lack of self-preservation instincts, bad tactics, etc) in the literature :) Perhaps it's not just the power armor that makes those boys thick.

    • @TheModularian
      @TheModularian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The type of delusion that occurs from low lack of oxygen doesn't go as far as that. Low oxygen does result in lower reasoning skills, but this would produce behaviors like consistently trying to open a door the wrong way, failing to recognize redundancies, and probably being a bit more trigger happy. This is also mostly because an organism attempting to escape a low oxygen environment has those types of barriers to solve in human constructed areas. However, the lack of self-preservation is entirely a result of the dogmatic conditioning so many of the Imperium are subjected to. Thousands literally sacrifice themselves every day, (and it is treated as an amazing honor for the OPPORTUNITY TO DO SO) simply to keep the soul of their dead Emperor active enough to keep humanity safe from the Warp. A soldier dying in the line of duty is small potatoes 98% of the time. Bad tactics though, I'd wager that's less a SPACE MARINE trope, than specific Chapter tropes... I.E. All space marines have high capabilities in most everything, but not all space marines place the same importance on the same things. The particularly zealous chapters would place bigger importance on fate/faith/the Emperor in determining their battle actions and even whether they survive, but this isn't due to their organs or a lack of oxygen. It's just how they're raised or trained. The Emperor protects.

    Would it be possible for the gills to be implanted and stretched throughout the space marines shoulders and arms and then be intertwined with their inhanced arms. So that when the space marine swims using standard swimming techniques they can increase the amount of surface area they have in contact with water in order to more effectively absorb oxygen. The downside of this is significantly more sensitive and vital upper limbs but the space marines limbs have already been so greatly refined that I hope this could be a reasonable tradeoff. As placing necessarily large gills that protrude on a space marines neck seems like perfect targets to me. It could also possibly increase the energy conversion capability of the arms and make them more powerful in a surprise twist.

    Presumably some of the organs could be pulling double duty: if you're implanting an organ (the neuroglottis) that enhances the Space Marine's sense of taste, this could also be identifying toxins to be rejected by the preomnor; and if you're already protecting the upper digestive tract against absorption of toxins, a coating that is also resistant to the corrosive venom of the Betcher's gland will prevent the Space Marine from poisoning himself.

    There is also the Adeptus Custodes, which are the Emperor's guard basically, they better in every way compared to the normal Astartes, and their transformation is different compared to the Astartes. Instead of implanting organs, like the Astartes.
    The Custodes candinates are genetically modified so that the same organs and implants grow naturally, but maybe the Lyman's ear, which is a cybernetic inner ear that makes the user immune to dizziness and motion sickness is implanted in the same way for Astartes and Custodes.

      @@KingCliveThe17th A lot of the authors for 40k novels don't know their lore very well. They've made the same mistake when talking about Astartes as well, and often forget that they are very superhuman even without their armour, not to mention other wacky stuff like regular humans being able to land blows that draw blood on Primarchs.
      On the other hand, every Custodian is unique, their genetic enhancements tailored to suit their body and mind to make them the best at the things they're predisposed to be good at. None of them have the same genetic upgrades, so it is possible that some of them don't have all the redundancies found in Astartes.

    Regarding animal DNA being introduced to our Initiates body to help with organ acceptance. This has already been done (percentage depends upon the Legion (30k term for group of Marines)) with the introduction of the Proginoid glad. Legions like the Space Wolves (aka. Vlka Fenryka, or The Rout) are given the Canis Helix. That is believed to contain a lot of Wolf DNA. This does happen in considerably smaller doses with other Legions, but it is believed lore.
    Also Legions such as the Death Guard, & their Primarch Mortarion, constantly exposed themselves to poisonous liquids, gases & toxins to increase their tolerance to them. HARD poisons were actually used as a reward toast after battle.
    In lore you will also find that the great majority of Chapters (back to 40k terms for marine groups) Home bases are at Very high altitudes. So they would be working in reduced O2 levels for most of their time there.
    Another great one Dr (Mister as I live in the UK & Chris is a surgeon) Chris. This'll be a fun one for my gaming club to discuss & break down.

The Multi-Lung could have the "third Lung" in the suit's back pack while a smaller organ in the chest helps the augmented original set of lungs.

    Surgery 7: You also need to route your bypass through the upcoming toxic spit glands. (the "poisonous" part of the spit is borrowed)
    Surgery 9: The "multi-lung" uses a gill type structure instead of bronchioles & aveoli (supposedly "more efficient" once the need for support and through-flow is hand waved) Also, see #7 since they can return most inhaled toxins with a bite. (The codex says they should wear their helmet, making their suit fully enclosed and it's filters come 1st)
    P.S. Another binge, another interaction - it still deserves it.

    If you're curious as to what makes a poison poisonous, it's chemistry. The more reactive a substance is, the more toxic it is. For example the reason why water H2O is not very toxic is because water is an inert molecule, while hydrogen peroxide H2O2 isn't, because it wants to get rid of the extra oxygen. Trixodane H2O3 is even less stable than hydrogen peroxide, so it's even more toxic. There are exceptions, like biomolecules or radiation, but reactivity is a good general rule for how toxic a substance will be.

    Can the multi-lung work if it is an O2 tank?
    When the body/suits detects a hostile environment like poisonous gas, water or low oxygen, then the multi-lung shuts the lung and slowly releases oxygen to the lung to enable normal body function. For the carbon dioxide there could be a vent outside to the windpipe to give the Space Marine the feel that he is still breathing.
    So he breathes air in from the multi-lung and breathes out the used air.
    Thus, and the training of the space marine, should give them time to do their duty. Outside of hostile environments the multi-lung may fill itself with oxygen from the lung.
