Reading books matters but retaining knowledge out of those books matters most.. Lesser mortals like us wouldn't be even able to quote few excerpts from this great lecture for our reference in next 48 hours or so inspite of the fact that we found this lecture quite interesting and pleasing to our senses..

Assuming the basic student attitude in IIT Kharagpur hasn't changed much in 35 years, most students are not interested in politics. Most incorrectly associate such topics with that. Not that that's good, but the audience for such events were often not representative of the mainstream IITians. Arguably, it has been to the detriment of the country that the IITians were too complacent or too focused on their own careers. At the same time, there's an argument for the students at a technical institution to be genuinely interested in technical matters. Avijit Iyer-Mitra is great. Subramaniam Swamy made a somewhat similar speech there around 1984, arguing for well educated people joining political parties. IIT, Kharagpur, B.Tech 1986.

First step to solving a problem is recognising there is one, these are our harsh reality, earlier we understand, use creativity, innovation and extreme hardwork our future can be very bright given sheer size of young people, this is our challenge of the century, no more running away from them, we must accept it, harder the problem bigger the win for our generation. Everyone do your bit, information is at our finger tips, train, this is our war, lifting ourselves out of poverty.

He is the first in his family earning this much, and supposedly i am going to be the second generation. Very good insight and Frank knowledge sharing session by Abhijit Iyer Mitra ji.
I believe indian culture was having that previously but in this western based global setup may be people may not realise it. The 4 varna was having a population distribution of 1:2:3:4 and the education was invested just focusing on the 1 to show as a solution, then keeping a check on economics that was to be managed by the 3rd group. A natural balance of knowledge: security: economy: labour was done and the spread of fruits of all three was balanced, is my opinion.
And lastly, I liked what Abhijit ji says that, he wishes to be proven wrong - I too wish that comes true, so these depressing truths become somehow solved and we get some light at the end of the tunnel soon rather than cont. in this vicious circle.

Similarly , Money ,after reevaluating its value the assets built long ago as a means to safe guard the country from a slide, was evaluated and the value thus arrived as per todays estimates and syphoned off and more is syphoned to propagate Hinduism and to shut up any criticism is also defined as a way to save the country and its religion.

    • @natalkumar6132

Simple , even Abhijit has not left socialism . Socialism is one problem , another is the lack of quality . Many Capitalist and socialist countries have industrialized and have brought strong Law and order . Where is the Law and Order and industrialization in India ? We are bad at both socialism and capitalism . If we were to take a record and properly survey and collect information as per modern statistical methods created post 1980s , you'll realize , we have lost close to 120 million people in last 70 years due to malnutrition , political violence , rioting , improper infrastructure and internal conflicts . Much worse than any capitalist or socialist nation . Where India failed and where most socialist nations fail is not capitalism , it always follows law and order and industrialization . Where have we industrialized where have we got law and order . Socialism is a just the outcome disease like Pneumonia . Lack of Law and Order , Lack of industrialization is the real AIDS . This AIDS is permanent in nature . Only few people have been cured from AIDS and few countries have . Look at Taiwan , Singapore , Japan , Germany , France , USA , Vietnam and South Korea have all achieved it . Us achieving this will be a miracle .

All the major social reforms in India (or elsewhere in the world) are done by technocrats, that is, from planning to execution.
Green revolution, White revolution, Telecom revolution, Metro, Space sector, Energy sector, just to name a few.

@SRA89 Well, when I used the word technocrat I was not specifically referring to "engineers" of our country.
From technocrat, I meant a person with an analytical approach. Now, there are a few basic skills (mathematical/scientific/philosophical) that are required/necessary for analysing anything. You just can't say you want to study social demographics yet remain oblivious to the concept of derivative. That is one of the major reasons that in India instead of social sciences all you have is propaganda and wokery.
