Just switched out some nasty velour pads (long overdue switch) on my DT 990 Pro with this example. Quite fiddly/frustrating but with your example and a firm grip my ears are happy again.
I bought a pair of angled ones to replace and was looking all over to see if I should remove the piece of foam locked in place via the plastic ring. The scrim as you call it. Looks like I don’t have to which is a relief! I also had no idea about the purpose of the stitching line on the side. Thanks!
these earpads are such a pain in the ass to change on the dt770 pros, i actually just bought a new pair of diff brand headphones because it pissed me off so much lol.
whoever designed the lock rings should be fired, my white drivers are forever stained just because I didn't know how to open them to change the scrims. I've just used them for 1.5 year :(

It's much easier to unscrew the pads from the clamp. That way you have more room to do the movements.

Yeah, I question may of the design engineers for may headphone models.
