  • This is round 10 of the 2005 250cc AMA Motocross Championship presented by FMF from Broome Tioga Sports Center in Binghamton, NY.
    Returning contenders like 2004 runner-up Chad Reed, 2-time runner-up Kevin Windham, John Dowd, David Vuillemin, Heath Voss, Michael Byrne, Nick Wey, Ernesto Fonseca, 250cc rookie and 2-time 125cc champ James Stewart, 2002 runner-up Tim Ferry, and 5-time defending 250cc MX champ Ricky Carmichael battle it out for the 2005 250cc AMA Motocross Championship presented by FMF. This series is dominated once again by Ricky Carmichael. After missing the past 3 races, Team Kawasaki's James Stewart returns to the series, only to tangle again with Ricky Carmichael in moto #2 after a 3rd place in moto #1. After a disappointing Motocross season in the 125cc class on a privateer Honda, Ryan Hughes switches to a Suzuki RMZ-450 4-stroke for the final 3 races of 2005. Watch as James Stewart holeshots moto #2 on his KX250 2-stroke!!
    Enjoy.

    I was there for this race. I really miss this track on the national circuit! Perfect MX track!

      Yeah, Broome-Tioga was a great track IMO; saw it every year from '97-06. I miss the track myself, but I miss Kenworthy's the most (Troy, OH)

    I was at this race. Watching James hit that down hill triple was insane.

      Lucky you that you were there. Stewart hucking that triple on a 250 2-stroke was very mind-blowing to say the least. Shockingly, it didn't look like he gained much ground on Ricky; of course some could legitimately say because Ricky was on the 450.

    Remember Rickey won outdoor titles on a 250 when a lot of the other riders were on 450s already .

      +juicyearl At least 1/4 or 1/2 the field were on 450s, but only KTM, Yamaha, and Honda had 4-strokes available. Carmichael was just on another level; I doubt anyone could challenge him in 2002, but 2001 and 2003 were different stories. RC managed to answer to the skid he was under in '01 after the first 3 rounds, but '03 was a season where RC might've had an easier time with a switch to a 450 (and I'm sure a lot of people were questioning why he didn't), but only Ricky could tell you why.

    And even after he got a 450 Ricky still won lol !

      +juicyearl True, but think about this: 2006 was practically James' rookie season; 2005 was just a season to forget because he kept getting injured.

    Atleast I got to see Stewart bomb that triple like a boss on a 250 2 stroke, would have loved to see alessi do it on a 125.didnt know he raced them

    Difference in power in Ricki's bike and everyone else's is no contest, that's why Carmichael won every race

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say you're only about 10% right with that comment.
      RC just worked harder than everyone else, and by this time, he was untouchable, and he had already planned out the tail end of his career.
      RC even said it best, "When I know I had a chance, I hate not winning." RC was just one of those guys who attacked early and did whatever he wanted. Nothing but respect for the GOAT!

  • @juicyearl
    @juicyearl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Honestly I think he would of won. The problem he had was Carmichael . James was so use to dominating he couldn't couldn't handle Ricky . I'm not saying he would of won every moto , but I honestly believe he could of won the title if there was no Ricky at all. If you watch all the motos, when James wasn't pulling out he was faster than All the other riders most of the time. Yes his bike (a 250) was under powered compared to the 450s but his riding style and talent was exceptional . He carried more speed and was much more aggressive than the other riders (except Ricky)

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +juicyearl I still disagree that he would've won, but the only race I think James could've won was the first moto at Unadilla and he threw it away by being too overanxious when Carmichael passed him. Stewart even said in his 2nd place 1st moto interview at Budds Creek that a 4-stroke was what it took to hang with Ricky. The 250cc class was and still is just different than the 125cc class IMO (as I mentioned before).

    • @juicyearl
      @juicyearl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +MathewV21688 but notice he said he needed a 450 to hang with/beat Carmichael not everyone else 😉

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +juicyearl I realize that -- but Ricky was his main competition; hence why he said Carmichael only. Guys like Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, Nick Wey, and David Vuillemin gave James fits on those 450s while James was on the 250. The bottom line is... Kawasaki was FOS in not giving James a 450 because they figured James Stewart would do the same thing he did in the 125cc class.

    • @RicardoSilva-qp4bb
      @RicardoSilva-qp4bb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I also believe - despite the hype - that the same would happen in the 125 class back then. Ricky was the diferenciator for Stewart´s competition outdoors and not the other way around. RC was just a machine outdoors. And he had a way to adapt to whatever circunstances/whoever was thrown at him outdoors and still end on top.
      We may argue that Stewart could have a riding style more prone to suit him on the 2 strokes - he had loads of talent and a very agressive riding style (but even then I doubt he would beat RC on the 125s outdoors) but if Ricky was running one of those 250 fs from 2004 and James was on the 125 Stewey would get smoked hands down.
      Carmichael was just to good outdoors for ANYONE in the world who was thrown at him back then (and possibly even now).

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RicardoSilva-qp4bb Fully agreed there.
      Jeff Stanton said it best, "It's all in the preparation." Plus, RC busted his tail all week long, and it was easy for him.
      You also make a valid point on RC adapting to whatever circumstances were thrown at him in MX. An example being 2001 when RC had that stomach virus and crapped his pants after one moto at Troy. Despite winning the first moto, there WAS some doubt he might not ride moto 2, but he did anyway.
      Think also Millville '06 when Carmichael royally sucked in mud races, having only won two motos in mud (Budds Creek 1999 125cc moto 2, and Hangtown 2002 250cc moto 2), and he lapped the whole field in that second 450cc moto!

  • @juicyearl
    @juicyearl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If it wasn't for Ricky James would of won the outdoors on a 250!!!

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +juicyearl Oh I disagree totally -- if you saw how underpowered James was on that KX250 against 37 other 450s, he would've been lucky to even win a moto. James did lead some motos, but 2005 was pretty much his rookie 250cc season after dominating the 125cc class for 3 years. He gave away 2 motos counting this one (Mt. Morris moto 1 was the other) because of rookie mistakes. There's a major difference, too: when James was a 125cc rider, nobody on the 250Fs were willing to challenge him for the win; nobody would do that in the 250cc class -- even if your name is James Stewart (lol). Kawasaki was really FOS in 2005 -- they had a 450cc available and didn't give James one, but in James' own defense, his teammate Michael Byrne was also on a KX250 as well.

      @@TheShepdawg9 Agreed. James couldn't even beat Ricky straight up -- Kevin Windham is the only guy who's done that in my book (Washougal '01 on equal displacement, and Unadilla '03).

      That's what my dad was saying with James on that 250 against 37 450s. I still give James a lot of credit because you have to admire the desire he showed in wanting to win a race on that 250 2-stroke. Honestly, I didn't think he would win a moto because he was on that 250, but he certainly had a few chances to.

      The AMA would not have allowed James to ride that bike, and furthermore, I highly doubt that the AMA would consider those bikes legal. Bikes like that would have to be available to the public, and not just to James Stewart and Michael Byrne.
      And above all else, it's pretty clear that 500cc 2-strokes for Kawasaki were extinct at this racing time. Kawasaki really missed the boat with not having their 450cc 4-stroke available, and James Stewart paid for it big time.

      Nobody said it was "too noisy". It's better to act now instead of wait until complaints start pouring in. Steve Whitlock should actually be COMMENDED, not reprimanded for making that decision. Mitch Payton hit it on the head -- it's not effected the racing at all. Going down to 101 or 102 dB is good, and it makes the racing more enjoyable, especially considering that people don't need to stand around covering their ears because of the loud motors. That'd be like telling a crowd full of football fans that they're not allowed to cheer.
