    Might be cool to have a pass-through window where food/drinks/etc could be passed to the outside. Or it opens to a bar type counter. So you could have a hybrid indoor/outdoor set-up.

    Hey guys I love your show. I am a plumber from San Diego and I wanted to say you might get some issues when flushing if you don’t put a vent within 6’ of the closet flange. If you don’t have proper venting you can have a gargling effect. Also setting the ring just at finish floor is what I always try to achieve because if it’s to high the toilet might rock... you can always get a thicker wax ring... just my thoughts! I’m really impressed at the family skills and optimism you all have all the time! Keep it up !!!

    A good layout plan for your kitchen, but I would move the majority of your cabinets away to the lower right half of the kitchen half-circle. Having a bulky cabinet separating your two windows you have planned would bring less light in and make the space feel less open.
    You could also try going for a quarter-circle island to leave extra space for a proper dining table on the left side; though I can't see for certain what space you're working in. But try to keep your windows grouped together to make the space feel bigger!

    Not sure if you are trying to re-termincate cat5 or cat 6, or if you run your lan at 100mbs or 1000mbs, but soldering the twisted pairs back together again may give you a wire map connection, but is really leaving your self open to failures.
    If you can, what you want to to do is get yourself a crimping tool, some rj45 plugs and female-female connector to do this repair, then seal it like you did. You will have issues with attunation at the joint that can also send signal echos back down the line in both directions. This means that sending an email may be fine (being tcp) but wathcing netflix may be rubbish (being udp). Two other things to consider is laying shielded external cat cable, and never having a cable run more than 90 meters in length. This might mean that you need to daisy chain from building to building with active switching gear inbetween. Let me know if you want to know more. When I used to crawl in ceilings and under buildings I was network installer in New Zealand.

    With all those windows it would be great to grow herbs and all your salad veggies right there in the kitchen. I make planning grow walls in my house and I am excited about having my food growing in my kitchen. Might be a good thing for you guys to look into, grow walls. For me in PA it allows me to grow in the winter and although opposite for you it would allow you to grow thing that can’t handle the heat. Besides giving food the plants clean the air and improve your indoor air quality.

    I noticed you are using regular Cat5 cable outside - if/when your buried (or outdoor sun exposed) internet line ever starts giving you problems, you might consider re-running them with gel-filled Cat5. You can pick up a 200 foot roll/box for under $50 - the outside covering is tougher and won't break down under strong UV light, and the gel-fill keeps water from penetrating and wicking up the line. The only downside is getting the sticky stuff off your hands after working with the wires inside.

Just let me know how long of a run it is. I will even include some patch cables if you don't want to crimp the ends, or have the tool to crimp them.

    For the counter tops have you looked at poured concrete? Have seen it done and WOW tint and stain like marble or granite and ceil, looks fantastic and very easy to get the curved flowing shapes you want.

    • @RedefineLiving
      @RedefineLiving 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was going to say that also because of the shape. You can also put a layer of epoxy over the top so it's nonporous (easy to clean).

      I agree with poured concrete countertops both for organic shapes (you can make the mold out of melamine for the flat top and anything that is smooth for the sides ... the bent metal you guys used for the forms on Shae's front porch slab and stair landing come to mind .. There are plenty of instructional videos for how to mix the concrete and build the forms and they are easy enough to do. You would need to research additives for the color and different methods for the finish ... you would want to add fiberglass and reinforcing grid for strength ... the only drawback that I can think of is how heavy they are when you cast them in really large pieces such as you would need to do for the island. But you have the advantage of having plenty of strong backs around to turn it over and remove the forms ... I think you would do just fine. Cool thing about concrete is that 1. you can make it pretty much any color at all plus embed broken glass pieces of any color (or even broken mirror, shell, metal chunks, whatever) in the surface before grinding and polishing .. although I would make a few test casts first to make sure it's what you want ... 2. when sealed properly, it's quite hygienic and 3. you can grind out dings with a grinder and even patch it if it gets seriously damaged. I saw a video where the fabricator used slices of stainless steel and embedded them into the countertop, sloped it into the sink to make a built-in dish drainer .. or you could just make drain channels in a pattern ... see the image upper left here (among others): www.pinterest.com/pin/31243791144052361/ and a more simple one that would involve just cut lumber to create the channels in the mold www.pinterest.com/pin/559079741220282094/ and as I mentioned above .... you can also embed concrete countertops with pretty much anything you can find ... then once ground and polished, even old gears and sprockets look pretty cool www.pinterest.com/pin/301811612510217652

    I agree with others who have mentioned concrete countertops. Another thought is to install some sort of planter systems in the earthbag walls in front of the big windows and under the skylisghts to grow fresh herbs maybe smaller veggies etc. Nothing like being able to cook with fresh herbs!

    Like idea of 2 kitchen sinks separated from each other, seems more practical. One for food prep like washing vegetables rinsing poultry and the other for dirty dishes, pots pans. Both with garbage disposals. Also would want a dishwasher that pulls out like a drawer. Did a house plan of circular house with kitchen close to center. Set in idea to do rammed earth with hand tools. The center would overlook a split level with atrium above and sunken area with windows and fireplace. Idea to put dining area under atrium with skylight in floor. On other side of kitchen have bed bath and indoor soaking pool with bathroom :) Want to incorporate earthship cooling ideas, so have to see about that airflow. Thanks for sharing practical experience already used toilet install tips for temporary apt stay. Keep it balanced on floor with chips of stuff. Used pennies. Lol never had that before.

    Concrete is great but it has to be sealed and can still absorb bacteria. Stainless steel is the easiest to clean and holds the least bacteria in all surfaces (that’s why it is used in restaurants and industrial kitchens). Love your work! Can’t wait to see the outcome. 🤗

    There is a lot of work ahead but so much 2 enjoy when finished!!! I also recommend the concrete countertops !! They R nice when done properly but can B timely!! But cost effective when U consider they will last your life times and then some! I like 2 do something once and then go on 2 the next chore. If it is not broken, I do not fix it! I like 2 move on 2 other things and there is always something 2 move on 2!!! Y'all take care and have a good week!!!

    I'm so sorry for laughing so when when the guys were dealing with that toilet flange. We went through the same thing you all did about a year ago, but we took a lot more trips to home desperate and blows. I had to laugh to keep from crying from the horrible memories. On a lighter note, you all seemed to solve your issues much faster than we did. I don't want to go through this again, but I know I will with a bathroom addition and another renovation. UGH. Pray for me and the My Little Homestead Family!!!

  • @rixanneh18

    ugh that cable patch job was terribad guys :) You are leaving that line open to so much noise and interference on all 8 wires. Just grab a waterproof RJ45 CAT 5 Ethernet LAN Cable Coupler Connector 8Pin Female to Female, 2-RJ45 connectors, and a CAT5 crimping tool, dig it back up, crimp the wires to the connectors, plug them into the coupler, and they'll be dust and waterproof insulated lines. (sorta) You don't typically run CAT5 outside bare like that, without additional insulation because there's tons of electricity in the ground and air and trees ..everything is a conductor. If you have problems, even weird ones like no "A's" are showing up, it will be because of that line.

    • @stevenkritzer6020
      @stevenkritzer6020 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably easiest to just get an external wifi repeater/antenna. The patch job in that cable will very likely be slower than wifi.

    Big fan of all you guys. Longtime listener, first time caller. Just thought I would point out something regarding the cut internet cable. In order to maintain the integrity of the data flow, you really should not untwist the pairs in Ethernet cables more than 1/2 an inch. You need to keep the twists all the way up to the point of terminations (your splice connectors). This will ensure proper data flow and help with speeds.

    Please, please, dig that network cable back up and replace it correctly. I get trying to save a buck, but you're one lightning strike away from losing every computer connected to that cabling. They make outdoor cat5/6 that is rated for direct burial that includes shielding so that it can be properly grounded. it's more expensive, but will improve your service and protect your equipment.

    Nice to see your plans, hopefully you can find another great deal on cabinets as you did with the musart studio. (Kitchen cabinets can be very pricey). I think most kitchens tend to be the family gathering spot so try to include enough space for plenty of seating as well as room to cook. If possible a door to the outside could incorporate a grill area and a pizza oven close to the new kitchen. I like the skylight idea, you could also surround them with led lighting for night time. Have fun, and take your time.

    Golly Gee, Gary. It's a good thing you raised the toilet flange. It's ALMOST like someone suggested that to you.

    Wow, you guys work quick.😲😁 A couple of questions though, do you cover your bags between build shifts, or are you confident that you can build quick enough before bag degredation happens? Also, my wife is wondering how many dogs you have, 😁. Keep up the great work.

    Every time I see the posts from the outside, the right most post looks bowed out considerably (like 4-5 inches). Maybe its an optical illusion and its only a inch or two? but I would be concerned that it will cause the wall to be over balanced outward at that point.

    It’s also called “sun poisoning”. It can make you physically sick. You should announce a day to come volunteer on your projects. Blessings..

    I often wonder while watching your videos why the “rooms” for the kids don’t have bathrooms. They rooms are almost big enough to be starter homes for newlyweds. Maybe the kids can stay theree. I have 10 children and would love it if they could all live that close to me once they are married.

    Is that a piece of number 10 Romex just buried in the ground?
    Very cool videos by the way. Hope the wire is dead if it is #10 Romex. Should not be in ground.

    More pug and no thumbs down yet, coincidence? I think not lol. Y'all should buy some scotch locks for the low voltage splices. And use a small piece of pvc at the splice slide it over the splice and caulk the ends.

    For the big bay windows, you could have Shae make some cute curtains for them! Something that matches the color scheme and aesthetic of the kitchen ^_^
