I just replaced the Little Giant coolant pump on the water cooled spindle on my CNC router. The Little Giant pump didn't have quite enough head pressure to pump the coolant from the base, six feet up to the spindle's umbilical cord and back down into the coolant tank. My replacement pump was the 1/5 HP version of the 1/4 HP model you used, also bought on Amazon (I love their convenient online shopping and free two day shipping) and my intermittent coolant flow problems are gone. That Superior Pump is a brute! I'll use the Little Giant pump to circulate coolant through the laser tube when I finally get around to building my 80W laser. It won't need any head pressure. I think this is the third or fourth TH-cam video I've seen where Tormach owners have redesigned their coolant systems. That should get Tormach's attention. If I had a Tormach, I think I'd gradually bead blast the paint off every part I could and replace it with a durable powder coat. This was the best Tormach coolant upgrade video I've seen. Top notch engineering, the meticulous attention to detail I've come to expect from l0ckcr4ck3r, and the video was very explanatory and educational as it was designed to clearly convey the information the user needs to see. Thanks! This was the "best of" video compilation based on the others who went before you.
+Liberty4Ever The little giant pumps are pretty good but i needed the extra volume flow. I think Tormach know that the default flood system sucks... they now offer an upgrade pump. Not sure what they don't just switch out the useless thing that comes with the deluxe stand. Thhanks for the props... but sounds like you have seen them all as well and so you know how much i have borrowed from the other guys. Grimsmos's use of the filter material in his tank is what sent me off to look for commercial solutions and how i found ChipTrap. If it helps others figure out their own solution, thats what counts.
Great Video! My Tormach 770 comes today. I didn't get the stand to save money and weight in my wood shop. Will have to start with a fog buster and plastic on the workbench I guess. Will follow your setup when I get a shop with a concrete floor and get my stand.
+Craig's Machine Shop God damn shipping company F'ed mine all up. Lost a foot. Got it on a block of wood and trammed in and running already though! Thing is fast as lightning in G-10. Yes 1100 as well. Gonna try and get 2 videos up tonight if possible.
+Craig's Machine Shop Great news about the 770!... both of you. The fog buster will work fine for you as you learn, its just when you want to push the machine harder that the problems start. If you are not too concerned with productivity right now its no problems.
+RippsGarageTech Damn, i had some damage in transit with the 1100, Tormach expressed replacements straight to me though. Looking forward to seeing the first footage on the 440 and your stuff with the 770.
I have a question about the filter you installed on the back. Does that collect the oil that gets in the coolant? I just got a 1100 pcnc and I am trying to figure out an oil skimmer solution. Thank you so much for the video btw it is excellent!
It does and it doesn't..... the coolant filter I'm using is 50 micron so it does get some of the tramp oil. The coolant I use is an oil emulsion and this itself does emulsify some of the way oil if they pass through the coolant pump together. The best solution is to try and capture the way oil as it comes into the coolant tank the first time round, by using an absorbent pillow designed for use in boat bilges. I swap out one of these every 6 months or so along with the coolant filter and my coolant stays great. I think the last time I completely swapped out the coolant was during a house move about 30 months ago... Coolant stays in great condition, no bacteria or bad smells... but I guess it depends on how much you use it. www.amazon.com/dp/B0000AY4WR/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_k8FGFb5QT7XH5
+Jack Flash Thanks, its been a few weeks of thinking about it and gather parts... got some 1/4" steel rod and couple of heavy duty shower curtains to figure out now!
+RippsGarageTech Yeah, its the OCD coming out again! The only tricky part of the build was designing the bracket for the check valve. Its get quite close the limit switch.
Great video! I'm working on putting together a flood coolant system myself and found your video very helpful. Two questions. Is the pump you purchased still working ok? And does the pump sound like it is being over worked/straining if you only have one or two nozzles open?
Pump doesn't care about increased back pressure at all, just keeps working like a champ! Considering how the other plastics in the Mill have been attacked by the coolant, id say the pump has held up really well. Don't think I mentioned it before but a really cheap source for those one-way brass valves is Jet.com ...much cheaper than anywhere else. Need to change the manifold system at some point, would like to make it lower profile for use with an ATC but it works really well for getting chips out the way! Good luck with the modifications!
Václav Zajíček it’s hard to say..... not much though. When the filters are new, the difference between inlet and outlet pressure is hard to see on the gauges.
Did you modify the electrical at all, I have heard some pump upgrades require an addon relay. If not I don't suppose you have the model number so I can see if its the same as the one at my hardware store.
Great video, thanks for detailing out all of the part that were used. I'll be making this mod on my 1100 very soon. Question: have you had any rust/paint peeling issues with the QualiChem?
+Jason Max Hi Jason, Glad it was helpful. No rust whatsoever on the machine or any tooling since switching, really happy with Qulichem. I have had some major peeling on the forth axis though since using it, i think its just a different formulation of paint.. no issues with peeling on the Base unit itself though. Check out the update vid here to see the peeling. I would also advise getting 1/8" nozzles for the LocLine.. it will reduce overall flow rate but increases pressure to remove chips even from deep pockets. th-cam.com/video/tPaXO6W--2A/w-d-xo.html Also the cheapest source by a long way for the check valve was Jet.... jet.com/product/Campbell-CV-3TYB-LF-Check-Valve-34-Yellow-Brass/068737b72b8c4bc585baf65b43bbe44d Good luck with the upgrades!
+Phil B Straight in the AC pump outlet on the 1100... can't remember where i read it but the current draw on the upgrade pump didn't require a new relay/contactor.
+GP Tech With little experience of any flood coolant, i figured iy was best to try what other people were getting good results with. Either that or spend months trying a bunch of different ones out... you can't beat free!
The surface finish from the qualichem on aluminium is outstanding, I'm using hocut 795b and I've been happy with that, if the local Aussie qualichem distributor wants to hand me 20 litres to try out I would gladly accept.
+GANADERONUEVAZELANDA I promise ill get more machining videos up in the future. A lot of what i have been making recently i can't show on youtube so I've been making videos on other things.
+gbowne1 Good catch, that beeping winds me up when it starts. I have turned back the volume and interval of the lube but all the ways are always coated. Need to figure out a method for tramp oil, the small tormach pillows don't work that well.

Wow, what a coincidence! I hope to be making lots of videos. Looks like you have an 1100 also.

@@l0ckcr4ck3r Thanks so much for your reply! That is very helpful information!
Nice work on the upgrade. Clean, well thought out and well done.

Nice! I have a used sump I've been meaning to install. I like what you've done. Very clean!

Just installed this same pump. Very happy with it so far. Thanks again for sharing!
hi, have you tested how much the filtr slows down the pump flow? ...each filter has its maximum flow and usually it is pretty low...
Václav Zajíček it’s hard to say..... not much though. When the filters are new, the difference between inlet and outlet pressure is hard to see on the gauges.

Are you plugging the pump into the coolant plug outlet, or did you get the external contactor kit? No issues blowing fuses?
