Yamaha HS8 HS7 HS5 monitor cabinet modification for better mid and low definition.

  • Disclaimer: Doing this modification will likely void your warranty on your speakers and is done at your own risk. It is also possible to damage the wires or connecters if you are not careful.
The end result of this modification is a much more articulate mid range and low end.
It will slightly change the low frequency response curve of your monitor, so your ears will need to recalibrate to the different sound.
In my case I found the low-end extension to subjectively be slightly deeper, though less warm/woofy and the overall clarity in the low end to be significantly improved.
This is a short description of my process of modifying a Yamaha studio monitor by changing the acoustic damping material inside the speaker box.
The acoustic damping material was purchased from Amazon for a cost of about $30 Canadian and then a bottle of spray adhesive which is about $10 Canadian.
I chose material that was 0.4” thick and roughly 0.95 NRC rating.

I tried this!!! Used the same panels from amazon and all. I am very surprised the difference it made, the mid range definitely feels a bit tighter. But also, the top-end is much less harsh on the ear and my mixes are translating a lot better in other systems. The stereo field also feels a bit wider.
Thank you for an awesome video!

Funny, I just opened my HS5. I use them with ROON and EQ but I got some serious ground loop noise, so I lift the ground inside the HS5. Yes the damping is pretty sloppy in mine too. I want to upgrading the inside as much as I can too. Thanks for the tips!

The purpose of this mod is to control the resonances within the cab, primarily in the midrange. It’s very similar to treating the acoustics of your mix room.
The louder you turn up the speakers, the more issues you’ll have with those resonances.
EQ flatness is typically measured at 1w 1m, which is not very loud and only about a sine wave sweep. It speaks nothing to the dynamic response of a speaker at each frequency, nor distortion from various factors including resonances.
For me, I can get used to an eq curve, but want it to be clear and distortion free. This mod really helps in that regard, especially in the midrange.

Hey Soundfield Studio, it's 100% worth it. Makes a HUGE positive difference across the spectrum. Because there's less buildup and resonance in everything coming out of the woofer, not just the low end and mid range is better, but everything is more accurate and clearer. My mixes are going far faster and are translating much better - I can trust what's coming out. Tonally, they are different from stock subjectively speaking, but it won't take long to get used to and I'm not sure whether they're any less flat on a frequency sweep.
I did this mod for my good buddy on his HS8's and he has found exactly the same thing - so much clearer and accurate, both across the frequency spectrum and dynamically.
I'll see if I can borrow a set of stock HS7's to compare sometime.

are familiar with removing the built in limiter on the amp of these monitors? supposedly it really really opens them up

    • @Jediroller
      @Jediroller 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I just did mine this evening, would say it really does open them up, I a/b against a non modded and really liked the difference. Its definately worth doing if you have the skills to solder 5 tiny resistors off the pcb.
      1. Unscrew 10 screws around the edges of first monitor
      2. Detach speaker wires from the speakers, they have Left/right sized jumpers to help not mismatch connections which is nice. Unhook led.
      3. Then its placing internal board somewhere solid to work with plenty light
      4. Heat soldering iron up to temp and check your diagram and make sure which board you working on and which bits you going to be de-soldering.
      5. You have to unscrew the board you going to be working on in order to get good angles to be accurate when you need to desolver, Easiest way is to seperate the board (which no video goes into detail to tell you, is 8 black screws in heatsinc in the back. (the black screws that screw into heat sinc). once you remove these the board can be maneuvered out to work on while still keeping wire harnesses etc attached.
      5. Go precisely and touch each solder point until you can remove each tab. You unfortunately got to move quickly to get them off before the solder drys. I used small tweezers here in one hand to help remove components.
(R417 has two soldering points, the other four has three. The components are glued to the board so you have to wiggle a little with the soldering iron. The soldering iron has to have a narrow tip.)
      6. One everything removed and you checked all the points where you did work, resemble unit and you should be able to test after against your non modded speaker. (put them both in mono and listen to the lows and mids and how punchy/more presence the speaker is with transients. What he already mentions in the video definately translated to me and what he described in the listening experience.

It's an astonishing difference, at least subjectively to my ears. I've been modding mics and audio gear for years casually and this is by far and away the most impactful mod I've ever done - conveniently also one of the cheapest and requires minimal skill. Definitely this mod is more noticeable and beneficial than any electronic changes I've ever done to anything. Most surprising and positive outcome is that my mixing speed, translation and consistency increased significantly after a brief period of getting used to the change.
Conveniently, if you are moderately gentle, hold on to the stock insulation when you remove it, and aren't too heavy handed with adhesive when you put in the new acoustic lining, the mod is reversible back to stock - but I suspect you won't wanna go back ; ) ha ha ha

    • @adamrobertthomas1007

Why are EQ curve changes acceptable for you with a.. REFERENCE MONITOR?? Buy different speakers people. Are you really claiming that these monitors, at normal operating sound levels, are noisy and full of distortion? Do you really not think that doing this mod effects the overall box frequency, the relation to every other frequency, and a hell of a lot more variables that are relative to each other? Some of which have been tested by engineers and purposely designed for the way the box is made. I highly, HIGHLY, doubt this mod is contributing to a better reference monitor than what was already engineered. It really just sounds like you have a colored sound you want and this isn't it.
