That recent Raymond Briggs movie about his early life and his relationship with his parents and wife. That's a super dark film that goes overlooked as it's so recent.

Ethel and Ernest? I did a review of that a while back.

I love how Chicken Run has the spirit of The Great Escape but it's original enough to distinguish itself from it

I always loved Chicken Run and all thanks to that childhood along with Toy Story 3, that's how I got into the history of The Great Escape.

Most old Aardman movies had dark elements, nowadays they are way more lighthearted. Hope Chicken Run 2 is as mature as the original!

I'm surprised there hasn't been any videos called "Top 10 Darkest/Scariest Aardman Moments"or something like that, as I think they would make a great countdown.
      What do you think?

Not gonna lie, although the movie was more vibrant and lighthearted than the original, I will admit that the villans plot to have chickens willingly walk into death is quite messed up

I only know dark animated films and shows from Great Britain. Anyone else knows The Animals of Farthing Wood?

I read Animal Farm in High School and saw the animated version on home video many years ago. Both the animated version and the one from Jim Henson's Creature Shop ended on hopeful notes, unlike the original book where the animals see the pigs arguing with their human guests but they can't tell the pigs from the humans. They're still biting fables of how quickly utopias can devolve into dystopias. Who was it who said, "You can get free cheese in a mousetrap, but not happy mice"?

These movie really tells the truth why animation is not for kids to watch and believe me it’s will ruin your childhood so back then words cannot express the feelings of growing up until now.

It's always weird to think Gumball is a british show.
Films to watch in the near future:
    The House
The Secret adventure of Tom Thumb
Pink Floyd's The Wall (yes, I know, sorry)
Films I saw but wish I could forget to sleep at night:
    Alice
Renaissance (saw it in film club during high school and didn't liked it but not because of its (indeed cliché) script, but because of its style. It was pretty hard to concentrate on the film because of it, it got surprisingly overwhelming despite being just black and white without any nuances)
Watership down (the fact that there are darker movies than this one in this list is terrifying, I hate animal cruelty even animated)
Animal Farm, probably the most depressing animated film I ever saw (also read the book which is probably one of my favorite books surprisingly), again, animal cruelty = bad
When the Wind Blows (might come in handy in the very near future as a reminder of what NOT to do during a nuclear fallout)
    Films not to watch:
The Plague Dogs (I noped out of the video as soon as you said "test subjects", sorry)

Whenever I see stop-motion on one of these types of lists; I interally brace myself as stop-motion tends to come off as a lot creepier and more ominous to me when compared to live-action,2D or 3D animation. Good list though!

The Plague Dogs and Watership Down are two of my all-time favs. My animation professor was astonished that I *REALLY* like The Plague Dogs. It is better than the book.

The Plague Dogs has an extended cut with the sniper scene?!!
That scene in the book had me horrified and justified. There are many cut scenes from the book, and the sniper scene had (if I remember right) the most obvious disgust that humans towards the dogs.
Glad to know the scene made at least a cut of the film.

I didn't, either. But I think it makes sense, considering how scary certain characters could be at times (e.g the villain, Mrs Tweedy was a crazy woman).

Ah, this video takes me back to the time when Top 10s were actually a popular genre and you'd find many such videos, especially about disturbing animation. I miss that, those videos could be very amateurish but had more soul and sincerity than a lot of the modern sanitized content. Your video captures that nicely, plus you got me to know about a couple of animated movies I had't heard about previously.

@jambreeqi what are your thoughts on the animals of farthing wood because this show aired on UK television for kids back in the 2000sor 1990s and it was a lot like Watership Down but more like animal Game of Thrones and it is very gruesome

At one point in time the UK banned most R rated horror film, calling them video nasties. The UK even heavily censored the teenage mutant ninja turtles, as far as cutting out most scenes with ninja weapons and even changing the name to teenage mutant hero turtles. Yet these family movies can get this dark.
