BIGHORN 100 | Getting Wild in Wyoming

- The Bighorn 100 is one of 3 race distances along with a 52 miler and an 18 miler during the Bighorn Trail Races weekend in Dayton, Wyoming, a small town at the base of the Bighorn mountain range. While much of the pre race activities take place at the city of Sheridan simply for infrastructure reasons 25 miles away, the race itself starts just 4 miles outside Dayton and finishes in a park in Dayton itself. The entire local community rallies behind this event and it can be felt by anyone taking part in the event. Volunteers and race staff are amazing and there even is a huge finish line party. All runners are treated to some amazing pre and post race swag as well.
I made the trip to finally start the Bighorn 100 after having signed up and never attempted it the previous 2 years. This time, I was determined to at least give it a shot. Late last year, I decided to create a new personal challenge, to attempt to complete a 100+ mile ultra marathon in every US state. I had completed multiple 100s in the same states over the years, so now I would focus on trying to visit a new state with every 100+ race mile I would sign up for. Bighorn was an easy choice. It had been on my bucket list from the beginning nearly 15 years ago and it was in a state I had never raced in. On top of that it also happens to be both a Western States 100 and, more importantly, a Hardrock 100 qualifying event. While I had previously earned my silver buckle at States 5 years earlier, I had yet to get a spot in the Hardrock 100 in 10 years of trying.
So here I was, attempting my fourth 100 or 200+ mile event in just over 8 weeks. I knew it would be gnarly, I knew it would be beautiful and I knew it would be difficult for me to complete this event on tired legs. However, I never expected it to be so challenging in fact that I would be bumping against the cutoffs for the final 25 miles of the race. It was the most stressful I've ever felt in an event and I do not envy those of us who often have to contend with race cutoffs.
Excellent! I followed along with Andy Glaze
Nice work! Epic timing. I'm glad you made it. The weather couldn't have been better really. 💪💪 Way to gut it out.
Thanks, yeah it was a fantastic day out, albeit a bit long🙂
Thanks for sharing Martin - and thanks for the shoutout. Great running with you :)
Heck yeah, let’s do that again some time soon.
Good job and what a great scenary ! 🎉

Well done! I was there back in 2022, also a hot year. Such a beautiful course, I loved it. Great job after 3 hundreds in 8 weeks!
Thank you! Two 200+ milers and two 100 milers in the last 8ish weeks, but who's counting, lol.
I did my geology field study in that area and I got a big smile seeing familiar rock formations. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Glad you were able to revisit some memories.
Amazing Martin! Can’t believe how many of these you’ve done lately on beat up feet!
Well, I have a whole month to recover now:-)
Great video great effort well done sir,

Incredible finish, Martin! Well done!
Thanks very much!
Congrats on another awesome finish! Great video as usual!

Wow! Incredible footage of the course 😍. I really appreciate this. My boyfriend ran the course and I didn’t get to go this time so it was nice to see this video. You have great videos. We actually watch your videos and Simon’s videos a lot because they are so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do these. Way to keep pushing and finish strong. 🙌😊
Thanks for your kind words! It really means a lot and lets me know to keep creating these race videos.
@@ultrakraut Please do! We love watching your videos. They are SO well done. Thanks for taking the time to make them. You’re very talented.
Great video! Definitely loved seeing everything again after racing it as well. Enjoy recovery!
You, too! Congrats on your win! What an amazing performance on that course!
Congratulations on the buckle Martin!
Thanks, David!
Enjoyed watching. Brought back some good memories of the beautiful area. Congrats on a hard earned finish!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow...thank you for sharing your adventure. Your movie solidified the fact that I will sign up for BH100 one day. Way to keep going out there. Love the ending tunes as well!!
Thanks! I'm stoked to hear that you are putting this race on your to do. It's why I create these race videos.
Congrats job well done! You are amazing.
Thank you!
Solid work out there! I spent most of the race about 2 miles behind you, this will be a great vid for me to refer back to. I missed the cut off at Dry Creek inbound by 4 min. Way to keep pushing!
I hate that you missed the cutoff there. It was quite stressful for me to Drycreek as well. I took only a few minutes before pushing out again. I hope you’re getting the opportunity to go back some day for some unfinished business.
Really enjoy your content. Great stuff!
Thank you! Be sure to subscribe to get latest content🙂
Great vid once again! Unrelated question: as a fellow expat you having seen significantly more of this country than I have) if you could choose a place to live (no strings attached) where would you go? From a trail runners perspective... Thanks
Easy, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, in that order. Of course, that's just my opinion.
Congratulations!
Thanks very much!
Good work man, ine tough course I was out there for the 52 miler. Think we ended up crossing paths somewhere around the top of the wall.
Thanks! Quite possible, there seemed to be a steady stream of 50 milers passing me at that point. Congrats on your finish!
Nice work
Thanks!
