Ultra Kraut Running
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 มิ.ย. 2013
This channel chronicles my trail and ultra running adventures across the globe. Along with videos of various trail and mountain races I plan to share gear reviews as well as a number of "how to" videos related to long distance adventures in the mountains.
I live by my motto "It's impossible to have a bad day in the mountains". I love to challenge myself and have yet to find my limits. In 2019, I completed "The Last Great Race of Ultrarunning" which consists of completing the six oldest 100 milers in the US in the span of 14 weeks. Since starting ultra running nearly 15 years ago, I have completed more than 150 ultramarathon races including more than 30 races of 100+ miles. In 2022, I tackled and completed my first 200+ mile events at Moab 240 and Tahoe 200 after failing at my first attempt at the Bigfoot 200. This summer, I completed both the 268 mile Spine Race in the UK and the Tor des Geants 330 in Italy. 2024 promises to be just as exciting and challenging.

Charleston 100 | IT'S NOT A RACE
The first ever Charleston 100 Miler was held in 2018. Nineteen runners started and nine finished this epic journey across Charleston County, South Carolina. Changed to an out and back in 2019.
Qualifiers for the Charleston 100 include Leadville 100, Hardrock 100, Western States 100 or any local 5K (run or walk).
This is an out and back route that will give runners a chance to experience the beauty of the Lowcountry during the day and night. It starts at the Peyton Johnson Moore Track and Field at Park West in Mount Pleasant. Runners will run down Hwy 17 South to the Isle of Palms, run around Sullivan's Island, through Mount Pleasant's Old Village, over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, go around the Charleston peninsula, over the Ashley River Bridge to the end of the West Ashley Greenway and then return the same way.
This was and is a self supported, non certified event. Roads were open and there were no aid stations or course markings. However, there are plenty of gas stations, restaurants, parks and bars along the course to refuel. Thankfully, I was able to run the entire event with Amanda, whose husband Nick is a very good friend of mine. Since he was crewing her for the event, I was able to have him crew me as well.
The cutoff is 40 hours and for the $1 donation all runners not only received a cool Charleston 100 trucker hat, but all finishers also received a shiny 100 mile finisher buckle. However, finishers had to complete one lap around the track at the end to complete 100 miles. That final 400 meters (one lap on the track) while still part of the 100 mile event also was timed as a separate event.
Note: The "registration fee" was actually a 41 donation to the Peyton Johnson Moore Fund. You can and should learn more about Peyton Johnson Moore at www.RUN4P.com as this is the reason for the existence of this event in the first place.
In the end, I missed the podium for the 400m sprint by 2 seconds and the top 10 in the 100 miler by just over a minute:-)
Regardless, I did manage a sub 24 hour finish, which I wasn't cofident I could do in my current state of fitness, so that's a definite win heading in the 2025 268 Mile Spine Race in the UK in January, less than 2 weeks away.

I was late in catching this - what an absolutely brilliant video! I cannot believe how articulate you remained despite such sleep deprivation and discomfort. Superb effort, and great film-making
It was good to run with you! I was behind Bobby in the beginning of the video. You offered some words of encouragement to me being a first timer. You were not joking about the night time being rough
Thanks, I hope you had as adventurous a day as me out there:-)
You had me at "running" 🙂
I'm running the NRG Trifecta this year, this video was great for scoping out the trails there for Cabin Fever and Rim to River. Congrats on the finish!
What an epic effort and run! Very cool!
Thank you!
Good luck, Martin!
Thank you, my friend!
I would keep these inside my backpack. Have a good race there!
Good luck Martin!
Thanks!
Great job. My husband and daughter both were out there running and I was crewing several runners
Wonderful! I'm thankful I got to run the final edition of this 100 miler.
Good luck at your next race, looking forward to the video.
May see you in Edale, Martin. Good luck! Have you tried liner socks with the waterproof socks?
@@sleepingdogfx6929 I will be using liner socks, but. It sure that makes them feel any better”cooler” or prevent overheating, but I’m sure I’ll find out:-)
The Schusters!!!! :D
Thank you for showcasing this special event. I finished the Charleston 100 in 2022 after DNF’ing in 2021. Noah is a great guy. The community around this is superb.
It’s a great event - glad you were able to finish!
Is there any race that I want to do that you havent done?!
😂😂😂 let me know when you do, so I can put it on my list:-)
Beautiful film and music. Great run Martin Well done 👍
Thanks much!
Do we know when registration for the 2025 event will open?
Not sure, but I would join the FB group to stay up to date on that.
Jan 10 or so. They have a website.
The website says that 2024 was the "seventh and final" Charleston 100. The "Itty Bitty 50" will continue in 2025.
Congratulations. I always look forward to your videos.
@@brianw5574 thanks so much, that means a lot!
Outstanding job Martin! Looking forward to 2025 and your (and mine) adventures.
@@wilmertsch looking forward to it as well. Still lots of empty space on my 2025 calendar, but I’m working to make it another epic one.
Thanks for sharing this journey run with us, helps a lot! Looking forward to following along at the Spine in a couple of weeks!
@@heighRick thank you!
Just found your video, because i was searching for information about the winter spine. I hiked the Pennine way this summer ( 13,5 days) and i really have to give you so much respect for running it in this race. Unbelievable, hope i can do it in a few years, but have to train a little bit for it :-) Just saw that your also want to start in a few days in the winter spine. I wish you all the best and will look out for your dot on the website. Happy trails from another kraut ;-)
Thanks very much and viel Glück for your training!
Fantastic video!
Thank you very much!
No way. I’m able to marathon occasionally but that’s enough for me.
Well, "when" you change your mind I will gladly answer any questions you may have:-)
Great video. I am a native Floridian and will be running the Forgotten Florida 100 Miler for the first time in 2/1-2/25. It will be my first ultra. I turn 70-years-old on 2/12. Your video helped me get a better picture of what the terrain will be like and how much of it is wet. Thanks for telling what you did for nutrition. I love Florida and this is the kind of beautiful land that I grew up around. I am running to raise financial support for One More Child, an amazing organization based in Lakeland. Thanks, again.
That is an amazing goal for your 70th birthday - good luck with the race and with raising funds for One More Child!
Great job! That was me at the Old Toll Rd Gate at the water only AS in the yellow a Houdini. I will be running next year with an alternate course.
Right on! Good luck!
Is course marked with signs at all the major Intersections?
Generally speaking, yes. However, I strongly suggest you familiarize yourself with the trails and park either in person or by going online and getting some idea of the trails and layout of the park. It will provide you with some basic confidence when you show up race morning and see the actual course map for the first time.
@ where can review these details online? Is there a good place?

It happens some times. Unfortunately I know all to well what it's like to DNF.. 😅. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! But I'm dying to know just how close you came to cutoff. I'm one of those slow runners who tends to find themselves chasing cutoff, it is stressful as all get out😅.
18 minutes, more or less. Race started 15 min late, so not sure of that was taken into consideration for cutoffs.
Great job!

Good luck! Sadly, I missed registration. It’s my favorite trail party!
Uber Kraut! Ultra Kraut!
Congrats! I definitely understand the fluid situation. I actually came in race just one week after placing in a 50k. Apparently, although I thought I was fighting a UTI, only 8 miles in I was seeing coffee colored fluids where you shouldn’t. Rhabdo like set in and I freaked out. I thought I was gonna have to call my first DNF ever. Most told me to quit. I’m stubborn and back off my sub 24 time. I hydrated with electrolytes like crazy and got chicken broth at every AS. I took way more salt than i would think without get sick. There was a lot of runnable sections even on the road climbs. Colors started to change and come back to norm. I prob went to the bathroom 2-3x an hour which was annoying. I too had tendon issues mainly due to all the running. Not only did I finish, I came in sub 23. So congrats on sticking it out and your 37th state. That’s amazing!
Congrats to you! Way to problem solve and to get back in target!
