  • There's more to rum than daiquiris, rum & cokes, and mai tais! We love our tropical drinks when the time and place are right, but we've never explored rum as a neat pour. Our friends Jon and Lindsey from Truths, Proofs & Firewater Reviews love rum and bourbon and they decided it was time for us to sample some of their favorites. So today we're posted up on the Oregon Coast, sipping these rums that they say should appeal to bourbon drinkers: El Dorado Rum Aged 15 Years, Appleton Estate Signature Rum, Mount Gay Rum XO Triple Cask Blend, and Foursquare Sagacity Rum August 2019. We can't wait to find out if these rums will appeal to the palate of bourbon enthusiasts like us!

Neat whisky lover/aficionado here. Fred Minnick's love for Foursquare Rum, led me to try Doorly's 12 Years pure clean rum (about $30 bucks). and I was hooked. A new world of flavor profile to explore. Sagacity is definitely amazing. Foursquare is a standard for Barbados Style Rum and Rum in general. The depth of history of Rum in the world is compelling. There is so much FUNK to be experienced. Both in Sweeten or Unsweetened rums. Unadulterated for me please, but I am open for experiences, we all crave sugar at times, I'll take my in the liquid form of rum.... many great options out there and many up and coming here within the USA.

Demerera River and distilled in wooden stills. Quite a story for El Dorado rum. I believe the British Navy procured it's rum from Demerera River stills. Worth an historical look see. Bye the by, all iterations of ElDorado rum are worthwhile. A sipper for sure. Flor de Cana is another very good rum from Nicaragua in it's aged expressions. Vizcaya is good; tastes like butterscotch. Black Seal is good for a 'Dark & Stormy" which contains ginger beer that you mix with it; National drink of Bermuda. Prussers Navy rum I love; the rum of the old British Navy. All worth a try. My bourbon journey has only recently commenced, but I still hold rum dear to my heart.

I've not been too into rum except in cocktails, but a few months ago I bought Plantation Barbados 5 year. If I didn't know it was rum, I might have mistaken it for a funky, fruity bourbon. It is aged in bourbon barrels for 5 years then shipped to France where is is finished in Ferrand barrels. I highly recommend it. I like it so much that I bought 3 other Plantation rums. I haven't opened any of them, but I have them.

In the interim, while sipping rum in Oregon , let the aromas waft you to some distant tropical isle. Going to Hawaii ... yeah, you're definitely going to be doing some rum. So rum, wow that’s awesome that you two love rum. I collect rum not like I do bourbon or scotch but at least 100 bottles of rum not really an expert but I really enjoy rum, enough said there’s some great rums out there that you can drink neat four squares was one that I would recommend as well as Pilar rum that is made in Keywest try the dark rum or you could try privateer made in Ipswich Ma. they make high proof rum called queens share or navy yard. They are rums for bourbon drinkers.
I spent a year down in Keywest and drank my way through 1/3 of the rum (they had well over 275 rums) from a bar called the the Rum bar. If you ever go to Keywest that is a must stop to drink quality rums, just tell them Norm sent you. My friend Nick will hook you guys up!

Haven’t had any of those rums. What’s in our cabinet is Barbancourt Five Star 8 year from Haiti. I use to travel to there and Nicaragua for work and would bring back three packs of that from Haiti and Flor de Caña from Nicaragua. Purchased duty free in the airports. Great stuff. In Haiti the Barbancourt is everywhere and at various price points (3 Star and 1 Star). The older stuff was for export only.

Rum, rum, by gum! You should try the Barbancourt 8 and 15 year, and the Appleton 12 year. Great sippers. If I remember correctly, Appleton, Barbancourt, and Mount Gay do not add sweeteners or caramel coloring to their products. Haven't tried Foursquare yet, but I'm on the lookout for their offerings. The Appleton 12 year old is quite nice at a reasonable price. It's got the Jamaican funk with a whole lot of oak. If you want to try something super funky at a higher proof, try the Smith & Cross Navy Strength Rum. It's a youthful concoction of two different types of rum, 115 proof, often used for making tiki drinks. But as a fan of high proof whiskies, I actually enjoy it neat. I'm a fan of the FUNK. You could be too!

Another that I forgot to mention is Hampden Estate Single Jamaican Rum Overproof 7 year old, distilled in copper pot stills and bottled at 120 proof. Again, that Jamaican funky rum. Similar to the Smith & Cross, but a little stronger, yet more refined with the 7 years of age (about $60, the S & C is around $30). You have to pause judgment for a bit because they're so different and intense but they are so complex in their own way. It's hard to believe that these could be in the same family as Bacardi silver. That's what I used to think rum was (cringe), and so never ventured near it until about a year ago.

@@TheBourbonVan refreshing! Unlike some other whiskey youtube channels hosted by couples - not naming names...
It's already been stated, but Foursquare is pretty much the real deal for sipping rums, particularly for bourbon drinkers. I think because much of the juice is aged in bourbon barrels, that helps. Finished product is unadulterated. It's higher proof - "Exceptional Cask" series expressions are in the 115 to 120s range. Also many bourbon drinkers have kind of a sweet tooth (me) - all the Foursquare expressions I've tried so far have some sweetness that feels balanced and normal - not cloying.
I think the hardest part for many bourbon drinkers to accept Foursquare is the kinda funky earthy burnt molasses profile - it can at times suggest rubbery almost medicinal notes - Islay drinkers may embrace it - not the average bourbonite though.
If you can still get your hands on the 2008, get at least two. It won't disappoint. "Shibboleth" has just recently hit North America - has the weirdest name but is supposed to be exceptional.

Great review, but I am very careful to pour a rum. I tend to find them far too sugary. The mouthfeel on Foursquare was certainly interesting and ... luscious? Thanks for sharing!

Luscious indeed! They're such sugar bombs though. One or two small pours is more than enough.

You will find no sugars added to rums from Jamaica (Appleton) or Barbados (Mount Gay and Foursquare). If you want pure expressions you can start there. Cheers!

You have Jamaican, Barbadian, south and central american rums plus hawaii. Yeah it's a wide and at times "storied" field. As in bourbon, there is the lore and generally you get what you pay for. Some will disagree, but as in bourbon, it's best to buy yourself some decent sipping (neat) bottles and forget mixing. Also think calories. Rum = sugar bomb. Luck in your quest. N.B. Check out Prusser's Black Tot.

The Pusser's Gun Powder looks interesting at 109pr (esp for us bourbon alchy's : ) Ever try it?

@@philc1884 Haven't just the inexpensive dram. The "Black tot" was stated to be from the last grog ration for the Royal Navy before the ration was eliminated. Was selling for an obscene amount and as you can imagine in a collectors display box. Another good contemporary rum is Black Seal. And if you want an easy cocktail, you mix with Black Seal Ginger Beer. Ginger beer having an earthy quality and to me very good neat or with the rum added. Actually rum is a good change of pace from bourbon, if you procure quality rum. Rum got a bad rap with college age kids drinking rum and Coke; mostly Captain Morgan and such which is nothing other than a vanilla bomb. Due your due diligence, ask around and eschew the mid to bottom shelf. Otherwise, rum can be quite flavorful with unique tasting notes etc. Do watch the calories though, for after all you're drinking pure sugar. Demerara River in British Guiana; Demerara sugar good research notes! Eldorado an excellent first choice. Good S....T!

@@jamesnorwood4084 Thanks James, the Pusser line seems to be in limited distribution. I can buy online (from NY) direct from their site. Only $31 but another $25 for shipping which moves it out of the 'impulse buy' for me. (I'm not there yet on having booze shipped to me). As for rums in cocktails, I'm not discerning when muddled w 5 other (sweet) ingreds. Like bourbon, I'm curious about the sippers. Though ginger beer is my fave mixer esp w bourbon. My latest is a riff on a Kentucky mule where I combine w lemon juice/wedges, a splash of Grand Mariner and 1 shake of angostura bitters. The spice in ginger beer makes it all work so well. I'm sure it w be great w rum too.

@@philc1884 I'm more a sipper than a cocktail man. And I don't want to give the wrong impression however, I'm not that well traveled in bourbon or rum. I do recall one memorable sip though with ... and I hope I'm spelling this correctly ... Vizcaya VXOP cask 21 $44.95 here in Florida. Rum is imported from the Dominican Republic. Reference Total Wine online web site. Their blurb cites "good sipper" and I got a good butterscotch taste on it. Cheers!

Love bourbon but the added sugar to some rums kinda worrys me. Im a type 1 diabetic so i am looking for drinks with 0 carbs to save me having to inject insulin in order to have a drink. Goin to have to pay close attention to the bottles.

Most rums are not true to the age labeled on the bottle, being aged in a different climate, rum ages a lot faster in those areas, so it’s a rough estimate of how it should taste like. Very hard to find true aged rum
