Story
In the Strait of Messina the sword fish hunters pursue their prey with a harpoon. This fascinating fishing technique dates back to the Phoenicians times and today it hardly survives in that strip of sea between Calabria and Sicily. Strange boats are used to hunt the sword fish: with a very high mast and a long gangway overhanging from the bow, they seem to defy the laws of physics. Some sequences aims to reconstruct the hunt in the 50s, when the sword fish was sighted from the coast and pursued in a rowing-boat. The "human" protagonists of this documentary are two crews: the first coming from Sicily and the second from Calabria. No prey escapes the Sicilian crew. On the contrary, the Calabrian one is not so lucky and no fish is hunted for several days. This will seriously endanger the family incomes. This particular fishing tradition doesn't endanger the environment and the species, as well as a predator fish cannot cause the extinction of its prey.
For all the people complaining about the size of the fish: THIS IS NOT A MARLIN, like the one you americans have in the ocean (they also live in deeper sea, not this near from the coast) but a different specie of swordfish that can be found in the Mediterranean sea. The size of that fish, considering its specie, it's perfectly fine, it's an adult not a baby.

My friend John had a stick boat in california for years. Guys a fishing legend. I've seen him with dozens of swordfish unloading. A true seaman adventurer. Huge admiration for the free spirit.

I love fishing, that's why I want to conserve it... it's not that easy about just making fishing of certain species of fish illegal to fish because they're endangered. look at bluefin tuna, they're nber has dropped dramatically since the 50's yet people can still fish for them, depleting their numbers even more. another example would be sharks. 64 species of sharks are endangered mainly because of over-fishing with most of it being illegal poaching of finning the sharks...
