- Here are a few highlights from our fishing trip to the Great Barrier Reef near Cairns / Cooktown Australia. All fish were released....
We fished on the Hellraiser2 with www.cairnsblack.... It was an amazing experience and we could not be more satisfied.
This is VERY good high quality drone footage...on a DJI Quadcopter. NOT easy to do with sea spray, marlin breaching, head shaking and tail-walking.One false move and your drone is in the drink.

As an offshore drone pilot this is my personal Everest. Having a big black or Blue trying to down your drone and splashing water on it in the process is an epic feat. You could feel the panic and tension when it came time to grab it. It wasn't about the gear it was about the footage and you sir have set the bar so high.

Lots of respect to the drone pilot! That was incredible flying and the struggle to keep the subject centered was attempted with skill! I have seen pilots who could do it, but only with $20k octocopters. To do it with a dji 4 is insanely badass!

I was hooked onto a monster maybe 400lb marlin today by chance. It unhooked and got away. Safe to say im obsessed after seeing that giant neon blue fish.

All fish were released.... with a hook in the mouth
the hooks that are used for this type of marlin fishing are specially designed to fall out of the marlins mouth after a short amount of time. they are also circle hooks which mean that the fish will be hooked in the corner of the mouth 99.9% of the time, rather than being gut hooked.
How they "fall out" of the marlins mouth? And how much exacly is that "short amount of time" ?A month? Five months? A year?
well i have a mate that tagged and released a 100kg striped marlin off of the coast of bermagui, he caught the same marlin 4 weeks later and it had no signs of a hook being in it. the hook rusts out but dosen't leave any damage in the fishes mouth.
They use circle hooks with dead bait that are usually hooks that will rust out of the fish’s mouth or be expelled by the fish’s body. A circle hook doesn’t catch until it goes to come out of the mouth and it latches right in the corner behind the hinge of the mouth. So even if it were to never go away, it does not bother the fish. I have seen a few mako sharks with longliner hooks still in them and caught a tagged marlin from an area where they almost never remove the hook. When you don’t remove the hook, you are not further tearing up the hooked spot and are not wrestling with a fish and messing up its slime coat. There are even studies out there on smaller fish that show when the line is cut on gut hooked fish rather that trying to remove the hook, they have a higher chance of survival. Marlin can even spit up there stomach to try’n expel a hook and the suck it back in!
I disagree. Modern plated or coated saltwater big game fishing hooks do not "rust out" for an extremely long period of time, easily months in duration, opening up the large fish to infection. That being said, a relatively small circle hook in the corner of the mouth may not significantly affect most fish. Better would be the use of barbless circle hooks, which research shows often falls out within 24 hours or less.
