My Vans Skates are ready! Your videos helped me soo much! I have done it with the fibre glass insole and it's amazing. I have taken the plate and rolls from an old nike rollerskate and used some new ball-bearings. I am still learning to skate and with the vans skates i feel much more comfortable. I've been building skates for a few years out of a horde of ex-rental pairs and parts that I acquired in order to start up skate classes in a regional town, and it never occurred to me to look for video's of the process to get tips! Then again, self-taught skate mechanics the hard way, is a good way to learn! My tools are limited to what I found in my Dad's garage..Damn, I definitely need a drill press, and the cleaning brushes! It'd make things sooo much easier! :-)

After drilling out the rivets on riveted plates what kind of nuts/bolts do you replace them with? Can you replace old cushions? Can you replace an axel? Is there any place that sells cheap parts separately? Does the rustoleum hold up to wear? Is there a reason you didn't replace the hardware with new black hardware? How do you know the pitch of the nuts if you replace the axel nuts? What about the axel washers?

Actually my next video was going to be on wheel size. I personally think the smaller the wheels the easier it is to move your feet around without getting tripped up. They are lighter as well so it almost feels like wearing shoes. I also can keep up with anyone so i dont believe they are slower either. They look pretty cool too :)

Not exactly sure what size they are. I haven't been able to find them new, you are better off finding a used pair I would suggest getting 2 new ones and cutting them to size.

Can you possibly do a video on how to replace the axles? I cant find anything anywhere. I have some old Chicago plates with 7mm free ball bearings axles. but my 7mm sealed bearings wont fit. I haven't told to either sand the axles down a little or replace the axles
Are you trying to put 7mm percision bearings on 7mm loose ball axels? I ran into that issue but the other way around. I ended up just buying new trucks for 40$ and putting them on the old plates. I'm not sure if there is a way to switch out axels without a press but will look into it for you. My opinion is to keep the 7mm looseball. Im converting all my skates to looseball;)
It's just a drill press. Its not needed. Any cordless will work. As far as the screw, May just be rusted.. use some leverage. Once you get it off retape the truck and buy a new nut.
Thanks for these videos I wherr a size 15 so I have to build my own skates or pay 600$. I'm also 300+ lb would you suggest fiberglass or wood. Keep it up I'm sitting here leaening
You can buy classic plates from any skates shop or straight from sure grip. Look for classic century sure grip plates. Or do like I did and find an old pair of skates and use all the parts
Without words it is hard to tell, but the plate is centered on the heel, but the front is just a few mm to the outside from true center. If you don't do that the wheels aren't right under shoe. Outside will be flush to outside of wheel and the inside will have more than half of the wheel showing. It also helps with push when skating.
hey, i‘m trying to turn Air Jordan 8 with a zoom Sole into roller skates. According to a skates shop owner here, it‘s 8mpossible, as the sole is not flat. But i feel like, if i can find the right plate, and modify it by drilling holes in the plate, where the shoe is flat(more centered than with plates i found so far) i can attach the plates properly and not have any problems. I was looking for a flat plate like you are using here, but wasn‘t really able to find one. I would need to have a place where the holey from the back are about 2“(5cm) from the back(i suppose i will have to drill these holes) from there, the flat area is about 6“(16cm) long, so if i find a plate that has that has fitting holes, perfect, if now, i would have to drill these too. I think that 6“ would give me enough stability, but finding a flat plate which is wide enough, is the problem i‘m facing at the moment. I‘m from germany and here aren‘t that many shops for skates. These that are here either have only complete skates or just a limited range.. Do you have any recommendations on where and how to find the right plate for the job? (i‘m totally new to this so really have no idea where to look) The shoes are size 10, which might give an idea on what place size would fit(?)
Watch this video on how to mount and bolt size. If you need to replace all those parts you are better off just buying new plates. You will only find old parts from old skates but these days they are probably all bought up buy now and cheaper to buy new.
Any idea how to undo stubborn nuts and bolts? I'm trying to restore a pair and I have two trucks with final nuts and one truck with wheels and pins just rotate when I try to undo the nuts. Any help appreciated. Don't really want to heat wooden wheels
No you can use any plates.. It depends on the size of the wheel on if the plates will work. Anything under 38mm you will need to make adjustments to your cushions.

In my experience I've been able to get use to an size plate big or small after a few laps on the rink. I personally go a size smaller on the plate than manufacture recommendations. More maneuverability for me.
@@nolimitadrian3918 they were carbon fiber. I had them made at a machine shope. The fiber was too soft and fell apart. I have to find a better stick of fiber but its expensive
Good work! Interesting to watch. I fully agree with your conclusion: These shoes are cheap (and I must say they also look cheap). Most of all: They are glued. I doubt they will last long when exposed to the stress of skating. You should use welted shoes with thick leather soles. They will last forever and will look way better. How about some stylish two-tone brogues or saddle shoes?
Additional info: many "old" skates used 7 mm axels, not 8 mm like new ones. If you plan on using newer wheels and bearings you can't use the old truck/axel.
This is a great video very well done. One thing I think would make it even more amazing, is if you just played the noise of the stuff going on instead of taking it out and putting music, and then also adding vocal explanations of whats going on. Just my preference! The song got really annoying, and I was curious about certain things, like how you knew where to put the plate on the shoe. You did a lot of measurements but I could not really see what was going on.
How was the total build less than $100? Ive watched multiple times. Ur work is soooo good. I bought a pair of skates. Happy with the boot but not with the action. I would love to just reclean loose bearings and go
The skates were 20$ used. I cut down the wheels for 30$ the shoes were 30$ and the paint was 12$ The bearings you can just clean with acetone. You can find it at any auto motive or hardwa6store. And thank you very much!!)
Why did you try to save the boot/upper it looks like a handmade leather shoe with a goodyear welted leather soles and stacked leather heel. If the upper isn't in too bad of shape you should be to clean nourish/moisturize and polish like an old or new pair of Allen Edmonds. and even if it is in rough shape a cobbler could repair it. It would have been cooler to see old Antique skates restored. See shoes from that time were made to be repaired not thrown away. I am sure you could apply it to an old skate boot.

If you are just learning to transition you should probably stick to a 57mm urethane wheel then move to a smaller harder wheel once you get it down.

Go with the most slidiest wheels. You can always take it easy. Save a lot of money in the long run. Putting up a video soon of some sick slide skates.

I like the suregrip NTS classic plates. For the Wheels I use sk8 fanatics 32mm fibers.

Go to home depot or lowes and get 10-24x 1 1/2 screws , 10- 24 locking nuts, and the tough one is counter sunk washers.
