To each their own. I personally enjoy it. The comic relief is a bit cheesy and cringey but I enjoy the action sequences. Same with the newer hawaii five-o.

I love how Magnum just shot blindly into the back of the ambulance his friend was dragged into, then shows him later on opening the door to see his friend dead. Magnum: Um, the kidnappers did this, yup, that's the story I'll go with.

i liked the easy viewing drama of the original series, the action wasnt really over the top or had this epic movie production to it, it just was enough to pull you into that world which is the real spectacle of the show. solving crimes. living rent free in a house with its own beach. driving around a ferrari. just escapism and not high octane or overproduced
You’ve nailed it. Every action scene these days has to be *SPECTACULAR*…gimme the more down to earth and realistic action of the original any day…you were pulled into this world as you expertly note.

Pride and prejudice is a classic and it has been rebooted many times. Always enjoyable.
The original was entertaining to be sure but it did not have the depth of feeling or touch the sensitive issues that this remake does.
The cinematography is naturally far superior.
The use of drones for Aerial footage and the technology for finding clues is really interesting, it does not have to be realistic …… IT IS. A TV SHOW.
I just want to be entertained.
Jay is really easy on the eye, and, as I have seen on interviews, totally without the giant ego that accompanied the impressive mo.

I binge watched the original for a few seasons...then saw a few shows of the new one. The original one was more cooler and engaging.

Why does Hollywood always hang onto the comedy aspect of 80s films and tv shows. If you hang on to the comedy too much it completely ruins what made the old ones great.

@@karayuschij They really did not need to make a new Wanna Be magnum tv show. ALL they had to do was Rescan the original Tv show magnum Pi into a 4K digital scan.
Bring us the old show in 4K quality digital and bring it to netflix or somesort

To all these Gen Z’rs out there telling boomers to quit crying or die off I am a Gen X’r and I want to say that I was a kid and watched Magnum pi every Thursday night.i just cannot bring myself to watch this because of the time period I grew up in the eighties this show and so many others was just almost magical. You young people will probably not understand because growing up in this time period there is nothing comparable to back then and never will be again I doubt I am sorry to say you missed out it is not your fault just the lottery of life. So there is probably not too many shows today that 30 years down the road people will even talk about much less reboot

@ Stephen It's because these young people only watch it on a screen as small as their mobile phone with a lot of distraction from around them. They only enjoy quality of action on that small screen, not quality of acting. I'm a Gen X and that's how I see my nieces and nephews watch TV series or movies.

I agree on the second part. Selleck is a hunk, more men should wear short shorts and Aloha shirts, especially if they have the legs. No agreement on your first claim though: Best bond is Brosnan, then Moore. Sean was annoying (became even worse as dad of Indy).

1) Stop to put women everywhere just to be modern ! Higgins is a main part of the series. Without Higgins, Magnum doesnt work. 2) Stop to explode everything just to be modern. Magnum is a great PI. But he has never been a Bond who jump on trucks and shoot with riffle guns ! Conclusion : They didnt get the original spirit.
To be modern, you have to have men, women, people of colour (any), LGBTQ (preferably multi-ethnic), and some nice pet… It certainly doesn't represent real life but it has to be politically correct... so...

the only one is Tom Sellek and the best character for Higgins role was John Hillerman, not a women !. The good idea was to keep Tom as the father in a new PI agency "Magnum & son". It could be better to introduce a new young actor for the role.

Magnum PI, the reboot... the one show where they have superfast cars my grandma could outrun.
It just looks idiotic driving around in a Ferrari in high speed chase, when it is obvious everyone else is driving like max 20mph, to make the Ferrari look like it is participating in Le Mans or something.

I'm old school (52 years) I was living in Hawaii in 1985 when the original Magnum was on TV, I'm not used to the new gen. But power to the legacy!

When I think of nMagnum and nHiggins kissing I see that image of John Hillerman holding a rubber chicken from TOS credits. Still, I was not happy when I heard PI was being remade, but I gave it a shot and actually enjoyed it. It’s not the original, but it doesn’t have to be. The original loses nothing due to the reminagined version, which has a charm of its own.

@@HermioneGranger-sr4vz Fingers crossed. H5-O was my other favorite tv remake. Not to sad to see it go cause it lasted 10 years and on a high note. I also knew a few years ago Alex wanted to leave so its not a shock. The re-runs will be fun to watch again especially with Chin and Kono.

I saw it a few days ago, and I loved it. I think sometimes it is better to see first before judging. The 80's series is totally incredible, nothing replaces it. But this series has its own essence, and in a way it makes us remember those unforgettable moments that we saw with the original serie💛
If they were making a new series, why not make a clean break, like a next generation Magnum? You could have had Tom Sellek hand over to his Mexican cousin Tomas Magnum,and Higgins be the niece or daughter of the original Higgins who took over the place after her father passed. The army buddies could then be different and explain why they are now his posse rather than his reluctant friends like in the real show. At least that way, it would be acceptable to old fans, as it would be a next generation , Independent thing, rather than a remake.

The problem with reeboots today is that they try to fit in the world of today. More drama, more explosions, more conspiracies, and so on. The vibe of the 80s is unforgotten, unreachable. People wish the 80s back and that is a fact in many countries in the world. Magnum, the A-Team. MacGyver etc. could work for many seasons, they were cool, did not take themselves too seriously. Today these bad copies only work for the pilot and then they loose it. Sad times, we are running towards something from which we do not even know what it is.

Looks shite. TC, Higgins and Rick were always reluctant to help not part of magnums crew. As soon as I saw "from the makers of fast and furious" that rang alarm bells. Originally they were going to have a woman play magnum, but obviously after poor feedback they canned that idea. But they still managed to get the diversity in with a female Higgins.
...which is also stupid because original higgins was such a ramroddy guy no women can act it out. If it would be a next generational stuff I would be okay, but they just copy the original what is lazy. The makers of fast and furious, exactly what we doesn't need in a Magnum series.
And yes, one of the thing I always liked in TC he was activelly tried to avoid Magnum all the time because he was hurting his business.

I'm a huge old school fan of the original show, but I am willing to give it a chance. As far as acting and dialogue I don't remember the old show getting confused with Shakespeare by anyone and it was Awesome!!
I try to watch the new show, but the old one imho had way more interesting characters and story. This new version plays out like a empty music video.

The actress who plays Higgins, i though was American who was putting on an overly acted British accent for the role. I was surprise to fins out that the actress, Perdita Weeks, was actual British...!!!!
This show looks like it has no soul. Should not have called it Magnum. Tom Selleck is almost 80 now, probably too old to make a Magnum movie, but Clint Eastwood has made some movies into old age that have done well. Maybe it is still possible to see a Magnum movie, he will just be a lot older. Until then, I will continue watching the original. I'm 32, didn't grow up with it but the original is one of the best shows I have seen.

I'm not adverse to 'remakes' but this....wow....looks ordinary for the following personal reasons: 1) The action is not believable, 2) The acting is average, 3) The cast doesn't inspire and the unbearable cliche' of 4) The tough 'guy' female ex secret spy. Hollywood must have two stomachs!

The show is like background music, the shots and scenes of Hawaii are cool, the characters and story -not so much. There’s literally no pacing, it’s 15-20 second cuts, then a new shot, rinse n repeat. Little story or character development. It’s a shell of the original show.
