My husband was part of a layoff during Covid and it was 7 months of tightening the belt! It was incredibly stressful and there was no budget for anything but day to day necessities! I needed my embroidery, sewing and crocheting to keep my sanity! I took a deep dive into my stash and even went through some of my husband’s old flannel shirts and started using clothes that would have been donated to make quilts! Necessity is the mother of invention and it kept me from going out of my mind with worry! Thanks for all of the ideas!😊
Such great advice! I started quilting after getting fired in 2001. I bought a bag of scraps for $5.00. I still have the string pieced vest I made during those dark days. I have been trash can diving for years. Making great quilts out of what others are tossing makes me so happy. Love your caring energy, Amy!
I raided my craft supplies from other crafts I do ... I used a punch from scrap booking to cut out plastic templates ( kitchen cutting mat) for my applique circle quilt.... better than cardboard that tend to fray at the edged. I also found using scraps kept me sewing when I had no money for purchasing new fabric. Raiding my stash also kept me quilting.
Love these ideas. I wanted a new project so I offered to complete quilt tops and quilt them for the Ronald Mcdonald house charity quilts for the Renegades. I get to play with a lot of beautiful fabrics for a good cause and doesn't cost me anything
I love the idea of finishing other people’s ufo’s! I’ve been thinking that if I were desperate for fabric, I could probably just put it out there on Facebook that I would take any 100% cotton clothing that anyone wanted to get rid of, I bet my non-quilty friends would be glad to give me their cast offs. Especially if they know the quilts are going to a good cause. I’m so tired of TH-cam videos trying to sell us stuff we can’t afford and leaving us feeling like quilting is only for the wealthy. That is not true at all! Thank you, Amy, for reminding us that anyone can be a quilter if they want it badly enough.
Thank you for sharing. That’s a great idea. My favorite thing is to connect with the history and industry of quilting rather than the ‘quilting industry’. There is so much already surrounding and always chasing the new feels like running on a hamster wheel. It’s hard to get off but when you do the creative possibilities are amazing!
These things are so important. I left a 10 year relationship last year and am living on my own for the first time. Everything has been hard but keeping creative has kept me sane. A tip of mine to add, if you have a notebook or grid paper, just sketching out quilt blocks or doodling fmq designs can be really soothing when things are difficult. Keep your chin up if you’re having a rough stretch, things can change in an instant.
Sewing charities, guilds, friends, etc, probably have fabric they don't want anymore. I've heard some churches have fabric donated years ago that everyone avoids, so don't be afraid to ask if you can have it
I can’t remember what well-known quilter said, “if you have ugly fabric, cut it up into smaller pieces,” but it works. I have made some beautiful projects/quilts using fabric no one wants. It’s usually on (serious) clearance or at garage sales. Sometimes someone will give you the fabric if you promise not to say who once owned it. 😂
We had to move unexpectedly and both time and money were severely limited. Time is still limited and money for supplies is not what it was. Your thoughts about now finishing all the things I left to start a new project have made me realise I could sew for ages with very little extra money spent and finally get things finished. If we hadn't have moved and I hadn't listened to yourself and another quilter, Karen Brown ...I'd still feel a little beaten . Now I'll stat to use what I have and actually enjoy getting things finished. Many thanks and hope things are better for yourself ❤️💐💐💐💐😊☘️
Finished your UFOs! The better advice when you are on a tight budget. We have so much money hidden on our unfinished project. Excellents ideas for your other advices Amy!
Great message, Amy. Thank you for sharing this video and for reminding us that there are all kinds of ways to keep creating no matter what life is throwing at us.
I started quilting because of old clothes that needed a new home. Here in South Africa Everything has to be done on a budget 😢 So my recycling challenge is so cool. Now everything is cut up... Lol now I have to get it done 😂because even time is on a budget Lol under the ironing board... Nope mine is on top 😂😂😂 I only just folded it and packed it up
Great tips. Really thoughtful honest look at what to do when your up against tough times economically and the emotions that can come with it. I am fortunate to be blessed with a stash. It reminds me to be generous. Help out a new quilter. Look for opportunities to pay it forward. Be a friend. I actually have shopped deals to stretch my dollar to give fabric to groups to do good things. And to bless the giveaway table. Sometimes it is just fun to share. My hobbies have been a life saver. Even in the down periods. There is something about just stitching that makes the day a bit brighter! As your messages to us do too!
We have a local place where fabric, yarn, and anything related can be donated and then the donated items are free to anyone. They also have volunteers to run it and teach classes.
Your words are so timely. All of them. Your calm demeanor is always welcome. Life circumstances have me stuck. Thank you for reminding us to give ourselves grace. ❤ one day I will be unstuck…
As usual, you have marvelous advice. Limited budget and fixed income here. I am trying to use what I have. I watch a lot of You Tube for new tips and pattern ideas. I buy only thrifted fabric, so my collection tends to be eclectic. But I still have fun sewing.
I a stash (and add to it when I can) for those future days when I'm stuck at home. If I'm stuck at home there will be no extra money to buy anything new. I'm also learning new ways to repair, remake, and/or reuse what I already own. Thank you.
tomorrow is a big fleamarked in town. I sure will have a look if there are some goodies. But I made myself promise to only buy if it's a really, really good deal or I absolutely love the item. Main focus tomorrow will be yarn. I have to admit that I slightly envy how big the quilting community and possibilities are in the US. Here in Germany my only possibility is online communities and long drives if I ever would like to have in person meetings. Tried to start something but there was not enough interest...
Hi Amy, I've only recently discovered your channel so I'm working my way through your videos. I love your positive attitude and ideas, this video especially, great advice. Can't wait to see more of you!
One Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts still needs to have 19 blocks times 4 pet block patch rotated😢 That error has me ground to a halt after fixing 8 blocks. I reached UGH stage and have not tried again. Someday it will happen . Thanks for # 6. Sew true.
Love this and the transparency in this video. So many of us are here. And even the fact that you can normalize our human collective during tough times, helps all of us that are in these places right now.
Fantastic video. I appreciate you didn't just talk about where to buy fabric for less. Many of us have gone through times when there was a budget lockdown as you so aptly called it. I never thought about the first two ideas, but now I can see how they would be awesome to extend the enjoyment. Appreciate your insights for the quilting community.
I’ve got a few of those unfinished pieces that need to get finished! 😂 I’ve had a rough several months and haven’t had much inspiration. Just doing the work and going through the motions without starting something new might be just the thing to pull me out of a creative rut. I also need to get my sewing machine serviced.
I decided this year, no purchased unless I find at yand sales or estate sales, we live on social security and really didn't plan appropriately, so really no money, the economy sticks, but I have lots of fabric a d thread, I did have to buy a roll of batting last December, I bit my lip and bought it
I just bought a queen sized roll of batting at an estate sale for 50 cents! It's polyester batting which isn't my favorite but it's perfect for the charity quilts I make. There are deals to be had in unconventional shopping places such as estate sales or garage sales.
If you need any hand binding to be done let me do it.. I need some funds .. where I can finish all my get all my dream.. I truly enjoyed all your tips..
Finish 👏what 👏you👏have 😮 such a crazy idea lol I really needed to hear that when I get down about not being able to spend ton to start a new amazing project. I forgot I have 14 unfinished projects.
Brilliant video, great ideas well explained. Thank you.Loved your reference to knitting - I knitted a lacy baby shawl for one of my grandies in 2 ply. The centre was 287 stitches & it took 10 minutes to knit 1 row. When I made a mistake it took forever to undo one stitch at a time.
Very inspiring! I know I am looking to reduce my productivity simply because fabric prices have become so high. I just did a massive clear out of my stash and found so much fabric I didn't even remember I had, which has re-inspired me to finally make those projects. I also found two quilt tops I didn't remember that just need finishing. Thanks for the great ideas!
Thanks, Amy, for being there. Your videos took me through really hard times last year when I was "marooned" somewhere where I didn't want to be🫤. Now that I'm back home and happy again, I can watch you and be glad I found you!😊
I love your topic today. Since Jan ive been trying to not buy new fabric except some background for a current project (cuz i needed black) cuz my shelves and bins are busting at the seams and i love precuts and they are so pretty then they sit there and the next newest comes out (are you seeing a pattern? Lol) its to the point i cant quilt cuz where do I start? I would love to help someone who wants to sew but financially cant (been there) but we quilters have so much to give.
I love the heart hand stitching on top of the scrap block, did you ever show us how you did that and if you did, where can I find it and if you didn’t, would you show us please. Loving all your hints, the last one especially. That one is my goal for this year. Thank you!
Ahh. Clever clever. I have NOT shown the hearts on the scrap blocks in full… YET. It’s coming but it will be mid summer. 😊😍thanks so much for watching.

We were in a similar situation. If I hadn’t had a stash of fabric and yarn it would have been impossible.
It is so hard to get through those months with any manner of grace. I’m glad that your creative outlets gave you peace.
Speaking so much truth!
Such great advice! I started quilting after getting fired in 2001. I bought a bag of scraps for $5.00. I still have the string pieced vest I made during those dark days. I have been trash can diving for years. Making great quilts out of what others are tossing makes me so happy. Love your caring energy, Amy!
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing. We are kindred spirits.
I love your videos. I’m retired and on a fixed income and keep to a budget. I take in scraps from other quilters and make quilts with those.
That is awesome! Scraps are obviously my favorite.
I raided my craft supplies from other crafts I do ... I used a punch from scrap booking to cut out plastic templates ( kitchen cutting mat) for my applique circle quilt.... better than cardboard that tend to fray at the edged. Amy, your positive energy is contagious. Your idea for this topic touched more people than you know. Great video.

Check out Loose Ends if you like finishing others' UFOs, and it's at no cost to you. It's a great organization.
I am makin a few memory quilts to save money. It cost me 9.50 for the "batting" and that's it. I got 2 quilts for under 10 bucks 😅
That’s amazing and awesome!
Thanks for your calming transparency! I enjoy your meaningful honesty! I am happy for all your posts! They ate so positive.
