The F-22 is the exact definition of a bully. That AWaCS did a runner as soon as he saw radar sights start blowing up with no warning. He knew what was coming.
Every bully I've ever met has folded the second someone fought back. The F-22 is the air equivalent of a Navy Seal or a Green Baret. It will preferably sneak up on you and do the silent neck snap, but if you do manage to see it in advance then raw unadulterated aggression works too.
Nah, this isn't a bully. It's the little guy sneaking up on an egomaniacal, self-assured, wanna-be badass and taking him out in front of all his soon-to-be former, hangers-on.
As much as I love the "I got close enough to see what brand of sunglasses the pilot was wearing" videos, having them be looking and aware makes it more exciting.
@@mrliver3250 yeah my stepdad worked for Lockheed on the F-22 program. Just criminal to destroy this stuff without a successor aircraft ready to replace it.

In reality an AIM-120 will guide onto any target that the host fighters radar will lock on to. So did the AIM-7 Sparrow. The pilot uses HOTW (Home All The Way) mode and the missile will ride the radar beam straight into the target.
@AtticusMoreno-oy6nd They won't fit the bay of the F-22, correct? This would be a viable option as the F-22 is likely not going to be retired as soon as the USAF is pushing for with the NGAD kinda in semi-limbo ATM.

@@GrowlingSidewinderYou have (or had, at one point) a missile impact sound with a long pre-woosh to it, which always breaks immersion for me because: 1) You're not going to hear a supersonic missile before impact. Also, the effects added in post tend not to be properly delayed for sound travel time, which also breaks immersion. I tend to prefer the in-engine sound effects as sound delay gets applied properly. Agree with some of the other comments: why not gun-run the ground targets? I know it’s a 20mm Vulcan and not a 30mm Avenger, but should still be enough for an unarmored AA site, and saves the AMRAAMs for the air fight.
My guess would be one of the following: relative target hardness and site dispersion. Even though each radar site was relatively compact, it might have taken multiple gun runs to definitely KO a site, which is time the mission cannot afford. The AIM-120 with a contact detonation takes out the whole site, support vehicles and all in one discrete blast.
@@Wien1938 electronics are very sensitive. 20mm is a big round. I don’t think it would take much to render them ineffective. Might not make a big explosion but then I think the 44-pound warhead of the AAMRAM is over-modeled here too.

Just because it can, doesn't mean the community wants to. Air-to-Air only guys are very reluctant to get into the A2G arena. "Not a pound for air to ground" is their motto. This notably came from the F-15C guys, and originally the F-14 community, and I also assume the Raptor guys feel the same way. The F-14 community eventually realized them going A2G gave them new life in the later half of the plane's career, and they also gained a lot of bomb dropping knowledge from having absorbed the A-6 pilots. While the A2A mission of the Tomcat gets all the movies and spotlight, the A2G mission of the Tomcat is actually very fascinating as it became the premier deep strike fighter of the late 90s and early 2000s.
About ten years ago Northrop-Grumman designed an F/A-18 variant with better stealth characteristics that used underwing pods to house additional ordnance that would otherwise increase the aircraft's radar signature. It was an in-house project, not a response to a request for tender by the military, and afaik it got a few articles in aviation publications and fizzled.
