The murders felt too easy & convenient. I thought Ollie was supposed to be a conniving sociopath so it didn’t bother me that his motives weren’t clear. I figured, “These people are nothing to him. He is just using them because he can.” What bothered me was how quickly they all became attached to him and how easy it was for him to dispose of them. Call me pretty? Then I’ll marry you in 15 years. Put a sharp object in front of me when I’m sad? I’ll commit suicide. Climb on top of me while I’m sleeping? I’ll wake up and let you do me. 🙄OK. I didn’t feel like Oliver was some mastermind at emotional manipulation. He was just a thirsty jerk… who really loved bodily fluids… and dancing. 😂
The movie is seen from his perspective so I think they seem dumber than they are. I also believe that the writer was trying to show how all the rich people saw him as a tool and/or entertainment and thus didn't expect any consequences.
I said the same thing on a different video and someone said I must have internalized homophobia just because I don't wanna see a shallow lgbt villain lol. They said I must be conservative if I don't wanna see him sance naked for the sake of it. The whole film is so flat and transparent to me, it's simple done wrong.
I was laughing out loud the whole time. "It's hot" "so hot" like .....
He wasn’t fooling most of the people he interacted with. They mostly saw through him-he just exploited them effectively. The upper classes don’t think much of the lower classes (Oliver is middle class but he is lower class than Felix’s family).
I love that Nick can pull these obscure references to cross reference these newer films that rip them off. Half the reason I love this channel. I learn so much.

Rosemund Pikes character is how rich people do dress. Very wealthy people don't wear Gucci or Dior that much, they wear crappy looking clothes a lot of the time because they dont want to show off their wealth.
As far as his motives go, I read it as Oliver being obsessed with Elordi's character. Maybe as you said not really being in love with him, but just wanting to have him. And when he gets to the point of accepting that won't happen, he decides to become him instead, in a sense. And slowly as the film goes, he decides he doesn't need or want these people or the house, just the satisfaction that he could.
Yes it sounds as if he wanted to possess him fully, with killing him being his ultimate way of possessing him forever.
The whole bike incident happens before he even gets to meet him and Oliver is lying about his life from day one at Oxford. He is playing a character from the start. I think he knew exactly who Felix was before he got to school, but maybe he just knew he was going to target the richest person he could find there.
I thought it would've been a better twist if he was related to/friends with Felix's previous charity case that he brought to Saltburn the summer before. Perhaps that guy had told Oliver all about Felix and eventually killed himself because of his treatment by the family or they planned it together.

I interpreted it the same way. He tried to become Felix. To assume his place as son and heir. Then he sped up that process.
Personally for me, it wasn’t the semen bath water that grossed me out. It was the DRAIN! Where all the nastiness is. 😂 I hate drains.

Edit: if you are discussing characters, then yes he didn't know and that was the WHOLE POINT, that Oliver is a psychotic predator, the scene was to show that. Felix is Jacob's character, if you'd like to talk about FELIX, you should probably stop saying JACOB, he is not the character. He is a human being that played a part in a film with a much hyped scene.

I think you guys really nailed why I was so conflicted about this movie. I think there is a lot to enjoy and think about here, but it doesn’t all come together at the end
Yea I was hoping the WHY would be explained at the end... But I didn't understand his motive. Beautifully shot film though.
I felt like it came together but some of the murders seemed too convenient. I took it as he is a psychopath who was just bored with life because his own home and parents were completely normal and he just wanted to see if he could get away with everything. Some people are just broken and there's no fixing them. They want more out of life but they don't actually know what they want because they don't know how to be happy. I guarantee even after he inherits Saltburn he will kill again.
The thing that actually bugged me most was by the time he got to the library you know he couldn't hear that song playing anymore, what the hell was he dancing to?? 😅

He's just a mentally ill bi dude who gets away with multiple murders, it's not compelling to me. American Psycho or Pearl explore so much more
The ending was rushed despite it being a 2 hour plus movie
I keep seeing all these people on IG and TikTok being traumatized and scandalized by this movie... and I'm like, how vanilla are they? I barely raised an eyebrow, and it was mostly at directing choices.

I’m with you Nick- the little matter of how to pay the property tax on an estate that vast- anyone living in the UK would instantly question that…. Which is why so many of the uppers living in these big piles have to grudgingly open them up to the public to mooch around on tours in order to keep the money coming in.
I’m assuming Elspeth not only left him the estate, but also all of the money, since the kids were dead. Depending on how much money he was given, the interest alone can keep him very comfortable and the taxes paid.
Clearly you missed the wealth and class divide that’s going on - the Saltburn is an enormous 100 room estate and all the wealth of the family included - gets inherited by a middle class lad - stop with the BS about taxes - they make it clear the extent of the wealth of the family - its a movie ffs
I think the movie would have worked way better if after the Birthday Oliver gets cast out goes back to his own life where he started. It would have been much more realistic and also a commentary on society.

Did you guys see Barry in Killing Of a Sacred Deer? That was the first time I saw him and have been a fan of his work ever since.
Same. And his characters in The Green Knight and especially The Banshees of Inisherin (which I saw him in most recently) had me expecting a different Barry altogether. I mean, I don’t know who was prepared for everything that happens in this film but I certainly wasn’t and watching it in a room full of strangers definitely had you hearing every gasp and “oh my god” and “what the fuck”.
I remember seeing Promising Young Woman and during the final sequence, I felt guilty and complicit just sitting there watching and not getting up and running out to find help and scream “isn’t anyone SEEING this?” This one had me shrinking in my chair, just stunned. And the casting was perfect, like Rosamund Pike after Gone Girl and I Care A Lot and Barry in his previous films and Jacob in Euphoria with all of them just swinging for the fences with these characters.
I knew nothing about Saltburn before going in except that it was directed by Emerald Fennel and it was a beautifully shot film that reminded me of other films (like The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I hated) and thought it was fascinating how much I was all for this. I think it’s the recent trend of “eat the rich” films from Thoroughbreds to Triangle of Sadness to The Fall of the House of Usher and so on.
This one will leave me wondering how much Oliver actually cared - I mean enough to dig a hole in the dirt. But I wonder if it was always a plan to become or replace them. Like he hands Felix a bottle poisoned with something so he was driving him to death but I wonder if he only did that because his secret was out and that would have ended his plan to acquire Saltburn, or if there was just no coming back from the revelation that he’s a liar and that relationship can never be repaired.

Just finished this since it is now streaming on Prime.. I was very unclear on Oliver’s motivations throughout the movie as well. Glad I wasn’t the only one! My main complaint is the movie could have been 30 min shorter without all the exposition at Oxford and the end.
I'm one who appreciates architecture & I loved the saltburn castle. Every room is beautiful & immaculate. All the furniture, the paintings, the spiral staircase, also the massive maze of hedges called the labyrinth was very kool

This movie was like a blend of Euphoria, Skins, and The Talented Mr.Ripley.
I think the "different" in that conversation was in reference to race, not him being gay. Felix had made a lighthearted joke about him being gay earlier in the film so it was kind of obvious he and the family didn't care. In the context of the conversation, it was clear that race was the unspoken issue of the family.
And xenophobia
The twist that it was all planed really takes away from the psychological manipulation. It robs the character of manipulating everyone into a psychological state of desperation.
I was disappointed in this film, it didn't have enough depth. I wanted to see more of Ceary Mulligans character.
I dig the Ripley connection. Jude Law at his most beautiful and PH Hoffman sizing up Matt Damon immediately (you'd love it, joseph). I'm definitely looking forward to watching this sinister little romp.

I liked it, it felt like a slow burn thriller that takes the talented mr ripley and puts a modern updated spin on it.
I was disgusted by the licking of the tub and the drain, not necessarily because of the semen. Even if the tub is cleaned, it seems very gross. I liked this movie more than you guys did but it was predictable.
Completely agree that we did not need the hand holding of showing us all of Oliver's actions at the end. The whole film felt very juvenile.

I’m a woman in my 30s. Hearing about the bathtub scene. It didn’t shock me at all. And I haven’t even seen this movie. It’s like when Divine ate dog poop in Pink Flamingos. I’ve seen it all done in movies. Nothing shocks me anymore these days. I’m only really seeing this movie for Barry Keoghan. Not Jacob Elordi. To me he looks a bit like Cody Fern with Martin Freeman’s height 🤣.

Hearing about it is not gona compare to randomly seeing it on screen, it takes ALL the impact away from the scene. One time a girl said "From Dusk Till Dawn's twist wasn't that shocking".... after she read the twist before watching the movie.... i was like, THE most bonkers twist in cinema history wasn't effective?? Girl you ruined it for yourself by reading about it lol
The premise and basic beats remind me very much of Brideshead Revisited. I love Barry Keoghan too. Great actor who is good at balancing possible innocence with an underlying threatening nature. It's also annoying that there are so many stories of "poor" people lusting after wealthy peoples' lives that they will kill them. Is that like a rich person fear/ fantasy??

I have a working theory… due to heavy symbolism and dark academia themes with supernatural undertones…it’s the dark side of Scorpio, the guy “from last year” may have died at Saltburn and came back via Oliver - his soul may have latched into the new guy who proceeds to carry on like he knew how he was going to get away with his plans
I didn't blink at the c*m scene, but the period scene? Utterly shocking. In many ways, w many layers. I also think it was important to show, It was defining of the character of oliver. He'll do anything, to get what he wants. It foreshadows how much blood is to come.

Oh I agree with you about the ending. It was like a paint by numbers, spell it out scene, instead of leaving it to the imagination, in like 'was it him? Like My Cousin Rachel.
The actors and visuals---like the palace and grounds---are what made this movie for me. I was paying less attention to the weaknesses of plot and more attention to the dramatic range of the main player. I also thought the movie was a commentary on the wealthy class's fetishization of the trauma culture of the lower classes. That may not be new as a plot theme, but Oliver used it for his purposes.
I personally find the bathtub water scene more disturbing than the oral sex scene because that was dirty ass water... lol. Felix literally washed himself in that water, and not only Oliver drinks the water, but he licks and sucks the rim too, that was just dirty lol. On the other hand, everyone has a period sex story, on purpose or accident, man or woman, everyone has been through that, it's just natural lol.
Oh and the family was just eccentric, that's why they don't look too expensive, that's why a lot of things seemed odd about them, but not really. I went to private schools my entire life in a VERY classist city, like once i got grounded for not wearing my 3 piece suit for a new year's family reunion. But yes stubble was very looked down on, but the father's hair was pure eccentricity, let alone Farley's hair, I just kept thinking in the theater "there is no fkn way he would be walking around like that, without someone randomly running some clippers right through his head" lol and then they do reaveal that Farly is an outsider too, I was like ah! that explains it lol. Felix's hair was already pushing it and he only gets away with it because he is a very good looking cat, aka "pretty privileged".
And Oliver's motivation was that he REALLY wanted to be a part of that world, after Felix told him that he needed to leave after his party AND on top of that Farley tells him a full degrading speech about how he will never be a part of that, Oliver took extreme measures when he realized he was done in Saltburn, Farley literally put the final nail on them with that speech, he pushed him to the limit. He planned to befriend Felix alright, but not to kill everyone lol, after Felix died there was no turning back, it was off to the races, it was like a domino effect
I had to 30 second that nasty scene! Drinking bath water is DISGUSTING! 🤮 Plus, I thought he would get caught and I couldn’t handle the thought of the embarrassment! lol

I think Farley gets kicked out immediately because he’s on thin ice after he supposedly tried to sell some art since the night Felix dies is the first time he had been back on the estate. I think the whole Oliver lying about his class was supposed to be a twist for the audience as far as the actual theme of the movie , it was trying to be like “you thought it was about class but it’s actually about obsession”. it could have been stronger but because it chose to spell it out for the audience it just felt kinda camp and one dimensional especially because none of the other characters had much depth and in the end neither did Oliver really.
This sounds like it was made by someone who watched Parasite and sympatized with the rich family.
Everything this movie had to say about class left a REALLY bad taste in my mouth. The director is a wealthy straight white posh woman who grew up in private schools with generational wealth.. who created a movie about well-meaning albeit flippant wealthy people being taken advantage of by the sinister, conniving poors? She had nothing interesting to say about inequality, class warfare, etc. I loved Promising Young Woman, but she should've stayed FAR away from the topic of class. Great performances from most of the actors though.
Wow I interpreted the film so differently. I don’t think Oliver was the bad guy actually. He acquired Saltburn the same way Felix’s family got it- by taking it by force. I thought it was more a statement on the cycle of the wealth/feeding off of others with lots of circular and consumption imagery throughout the film. Felix is NOT the good guy.
Ill definitely b checking this one out. I was a big fan of promising young woman. I kinda like charecter studies about life on the other side of the tracks and the weirdness that follows! Emerald Fennell is on my list of my must watch directors rn.And thats not a long list. Villanue, Ari Aster, Eggers r a couple.
Period blood is actually clean and I'm used to it so it's nothing to me. The bath was gross to me because I know how dirty the bath drain gets. If it were just sperm in clean water it would be fine.
In the first half hour of the film, I whispered to my friend while in the theater that this had “The Talented Mr Ripley” vibes. Then it took all kinds of turns. At first you think Felix’s family is going to do something sinister to Ollie, then you realize Ollie is the monster to be feared. He loved Felix so much that, as Venetia’s character so aptly put it, “he wanted to eat him up and lick the plate.” He wanted his life, and in the end, he had it. I think this film was very well done and I’m happy we got certain things confirmed at the end.
My interpretation of Oliver’s motive is that he enjoyed the act of manipulation and sex was a powerful tool is that process. The ultimate fruit of that labor is taking over that generational wealth.
Great review gentlemen! This movie is one of my favorite movies of the year. I was hoping the butler would of taken Oliver out in the end. It seemed like he knew what Oliver was up too, I think that would of been a better ending but overall the movie was great. Love it when movies push the envelope and depict the extremes of human nature.
I want to see this because of Pike, and I'm glad I've been forewarned about *both* the bathwater and the period scene. I'm completely equal opportunity in what I find off putting. Lol.
What was Oliver’s reason to do what he did? They state at one point that he is a vampire, ironically just after the vampire scene. He wants to suck the life from them, have a contact high from them, he wants to do them, pretend that he is one of them, become them.
But they dont enough of why he’s this way. The movie is extremely surface level and cheap

I felt, bathwater aside, the "shocking" factors in the film were tiresome, specifically the fact Fennell had no problem explicitly depicting the main straight sex scene, but was much more squeamish in regards to showing gay themes or sex, like we're still in the era of Nick's beloved "Suddenly, Last Summer" from 1959, and we can't see much of anything having to do with THAT. I understand why Joseph wasn't quite sure about Oliver's sexuality, what with the vague hemming and hawing about it in regards to Oliver and Felix, either together or solo (both might kinda/sorta/maybe be gay). Check out 1970's "Something for Everyone" with Michael York and Angela Lansbury for a (IMO) better take on a similar theme.
The extremely awkward karaoke song was classic The Pet Shop Boys. Quite a lot of Britishness about this film. I also got The Great Gatsby vibes ...

The bathtub scene is literally grosser than the period scene-that’s why people thought it was grosser. Having mutual contact with someone menstruating is different than drinking filthy (spunky) bathwater 😂 come on.
"I also don't think they're supid...", Nick. I agree. It had an interesting idea and the portrayal of the family could have been a compelling statement about status and codependency. Instead, it drifts and explains too much so by the end, it is mostly underwhelming.

"two semesters before summer" 2:10 Actually Oxford is on a trimester schedule, so there would be three short semesters before the summer break, typically mid June to Early October. But I haven't seen the film so I don't know how they treat this.

This movie was fucking amazing, watched it three times and still thinking about it, Oliver was such an incredible complex character to study. Barry deserves an Oscar for this role definitely 💯

the period sex scene honestly isn’t that jarring .. if you have sex with women it’s not far off that you have sex while she’s on her period like it’s normal tbh lol.
Someone like Oliver, who his mother said didn't have any friends his whole life, doesn't suddenly turn into a master manipulator who is capable of all the crap he does. The sexual scene with Felix's sister is especially ridiculous. Someone who hasn't had friends is suddenly going to be able to seduce a girl like that? How did the police not find out about any of his murder plots? The whole thing is ridiculous. It's just a movie for the sake of shock value. True crime fever dream....lol. I could have written this schlock.

There were a lot of people who didn't think it was necessary to show the flashback montage of Oliver engineering everything. But... you'd be surprised by how many people just thought these unfortunate incidents were just happening on their own! People were not connecting the obvious dots together. So, yes, they had to show it.
It comes together in the end. Oliver admits to hating Felix. Disgusting that they Threw away Farley on the word of a stranger. Saltburn is rhe Talented Mr Ripley 10.0. I got that vibe from the start.
Uhm, what Joseph said: "random crime fiction" So good, your opinions on the "class issues" and "crime fiction" as poll quotes! Your exploration into this character's motives, made me think of parasite looking for a host...but, movie's narrative seems firmly fixed!
I understand not liking the explanation montage at the end... I'm in the middle ... I think there could have been something like it but not to the extent that was filmed ... it could have been something subtle... revealing a couple things but not everything. For instance, I didn't need to be told that Oliver killed them ... but the fact that he sabotaged the bicycle to get in and make contact in the first place, that reveal was effective to me. Also that he actually had money at the pub in the begining, I like that touch too. I think there's a middle way this could have been filmed where we get a couple bits like that but not everything banged on our head about the murders and such
I just watched the movie yesterday, so naturally today is all about reviews and interviews. Y'all killing me with the comments about Farleigh's hair. This is the 3rd/4th video I've watched where his hair is mentioned in the video and/or comment section. The comments are antiblack AF 😒🙄.
After the scene of Venetia dead in the tub you can consider the movie over. After that it is just cringe. Pity!
Loved the movie as a fast-moving portrait of a psychopath. I don't think Nick and Joe are aware of how quickly time passes in the film. Excellent acting and loved the scenery. I gave it 4 out of 5.
Check out the classic “Kind Hearts and Coronets” starring Alec Guinness and Dennis Price from 1949. It has a similar vibe but done with understatement and vicious humor. Guinness plays something like 7 or 8 different characters from one family all in line for a dukedom. Dennis Price ensures they never make it. One of the truly great films. You won’t be sorry. :-)

I am getting "Brideshead Revisited" vibes, but without the murders. Sounds very interesting to me, so I am sorry to say I had to turn your video off after 4 1/2 mins. This is a movie that I will see. Thank you for your review.
Just recently saw it over the Christmas season and you guys review are spot on, I really wanted to like the film so bad but so disappointed bc it was trying to balance out the themes between human desire, obsession and excess and social class hierarchy it did better tackling the former themes while the latter fell flat and that made the story be more disconnected. I also felt Olivier’s motivation wasn’t clear either and I really felt Jacob’s character was underdeveloped, I did love the farleigh character so much to the point I wanted him to be more of the lead
Side note: the scene where you said Olivier seduced farleigh it actually didn’t he actually SA him into submission

I think it's pretty clear that Oliver desired (understatement of the year) Felix. I mean the longing gaze, the bath scene, the grave fucking. It's sexual. He killed him because Felix rejected him and tried to expel him from this family that he'd sunk his claws in. Both provocative scenes disgusted me, but the disgust with bath scene is more about the dirty bathwater and the drain. I mean, is there anything more disgusting than a drain?

It’s like parasite, Brideshead revisited, secret history and mr ripley mixed together in a y2k backdrop. Honestly, it was very referential and didn’t really astound me with a perspective.
I’ve seen this story before and it felt like they were just going through the motions.
I LOVED ewan mitchel’s creepy character that was good at math. So cringy and odd and it made him the most interesting to me lol. Kind of wanted to see him tie into the story more, but nope.

It was like Talented Mr Riple mixed with American Psycho, Farleigh reminded me of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character in Ripley. None of the scenarios are based in any type of reality, so I watched it as a 'fantasy' fever dream film. I kinda liked it but it's not something I would watch again or recommend. The acting and the music, I really enjoyed.
