Several years ago Dumaguete really was the city of gentle people. In the last 5 or 6 years it's become so crowded and traffic is really a problem. Southern Negros has some great retirement locations like Manjuyod, Bindoy, Amlan and Siaton. For me it's better to live about an hour away from Duma and just come maybe once a week for banking and shopping. The Philippines is different in every location and we all have different goals in retirement. Main thing for the new guys is to be flexible and recon several locations before you commit to settling down in one place. Also don't rush relationships, just go slow with everything for the first year or so. Take care and good luck.

Not many know that Cebu island has 44 rural towns and smaller cities with rural ambiance with lower cost of living than the tri-cities of Cebu City, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu. Balamban and Toledo which both border Cebu City to the west, for example, offer lower cost of living even lower than Dumaguete yet they are just a few minutes drive to and from Cebu City (via TCH or TRANSCENTRAL HIGHWAY for Balamban or Toledo-Manipis Road for Toledo City). The there are Liloan and Consolacion to the north and Minglanilla, Naga and San Fernando to the south. All these suburban towns and cities have lower cost of living yet they are so close to Cebu City for its modern conveniences and medical needs as well as the beaches and mountains for nature tripping.

If you want amenities equivalent to America, Australia, England or any other modern western type country you are used to, do not move to provincial Philippines. Stick to the major cities or enclaves where there are numerous foreigners. I personally don't like cities even when living in Australia I have lived in off the grid housing in rural areas. I oved straight into a province into 3dr world conditions. I was well aware my body was not going to far well until it adapted to its new environment. I was very right because I suffered heavily in the first year of living here.
I am completely committed to live or die here so it takes a strong mind-set if you want to make a complete sea-change. Not something I would recommend to anybody venturing out of their comfortable life where modern facilities are abundant if you are not committed and think you are in for a cruise that is not The Philippines. I love it and my life here 7 years on living a simple life with my wife and family.
Enjoy what you have, enjoy building a new life! Merry Christmas all.

For ANYONE over 70.. especially 75, and even more approaching age 80. The Philippines is filled with wonderful people.. but at that advanced age, there are also predatory people (as anywhere in the world, except you're on the other side of the world) and NOT always safe. I'm closer to Chad's age.. but sometimes or often, OLDER guys turn into children again and OFTEN make BAD choices. But.. nothing I say or you sat will change their minds.. so best wishes and good luck

Curtis, I don't disagree, but nowhere is always safe. That's why you find a pinay you can commit to and invest in her and her family so you earn their respect and support for later on in life... same as you would in the West. Filipinos are far more family oriented and tend to stay together in multi-generational compounds rather than the US where the kids often live on the entire other side of the country. I am planning to choose a multi-home approach of province/small town and also have a condo in Cebu for medical treatments, visas, etc. Peace, B Goat

Well said Chad !! Lack of adequate walkways ( sidewalks) and amenities for the mobility-challenged pedestrians are lacking in locations like Dumaguete etc. Street pavements are not even. Most provinces do not have the infrastructures that would make it easier for the elderly to navigate. This is one aspect of the Filipino life that should be addressed by the govt. Unfortunately, it’s not a priority.

  • @DanLopezGuitar

Dumaguete gave me a real 80's vibe, which I liked somehow, but after a little while I felt it was good to get out of it. I think, because of TH-cam, the Philippines are a bit hyped up too much. And for everyone saying it's a good idea to stay near Ayala mall in Cebu: there is absolutely nothing to do in that area, besides visiting the mall (where you don't even have benches to sit). In my conclusion there are much better places to live than in the Philippines.

I have spent a fair bit of time in both cities and you are correct. Dumaguete has lots of exploring and outdoor options but you need a vehicle, I have a motorbike. In Cebu I stayed close to Ayala and I loved that as well. I did not need a vehicle there, most days walking only. When I needed a vehicle I just rented. But it takes forever to get out of the city, it was too big for me. As always the only way to know is to try them out. Cam

@free2roam674.....It takes forever to get out of the city? Then you must have not known Cebu City well. Don't you know that the lush scenic mountains of Cebu City is just 10-20 minutes drive uphill from IT Park? The lush forested mountains of Cebu City is host to a lot of viewing platforms, botanical gardens, adventure parks, chic cafes, casual restaurants, scenic resorts, boutique resorts, hiking trails, camp sites, even the famous Temple of Leah. These mountains, like the rest of the entire Cebu islands, are crisscrossed by scenic and paved mountain roads passing through quaint villages, farms, waterfalls, etc. The new CCLEX now allows you to hit the beach resorts on Mactan Island from Cebu City on Cebu mainland in a zip, in just 8 minutes from side of Cebu City (next to SM Seaside) towards Cordova. From the Cordova, a new access road takes you straight to the eastern coast of Mactan Island where most of the resorts are located. In Dumaguete, you have no access to white sand beaches or nice resorts nearby.

@@yaimavol A lot of rental homes up the mountains of Cebu City, be it private or resorts, either for short term, medium term or long term. You only need to search because Cebu City isn't a small city like Dumaguete. You only need a scooter if you want freedom to travel up and down the scenic mountains of Cebu if you don't like living in the center of the big city. Cebu City is the only major city in the Philippines that offer you options to live near the ocean, busy city center or the mountains yet you can have all three in close proximity in just minutes apart on scooter or private car drive. There are a few high-rise condo up the mountains as well if you like: Le Menda, Citylights, Marco Polo Residences. There's an upcoming twin 38-storey tower high-rise condotel close to Marco Polo which is now nearing completion, the 32 Nivel Hills. Just a few meters nearby, another mixed-used development with a huge mall and a residential condo with over 1,000 units is already shaping up, just launched 2 months ago.

It's so much easier living in a high rise condo in Metro Manila, (Makati, BGC, Taguig.) Most high rise buildings have a grocery store on the bottom floor to do most of your gro ery shopping. If you want a bigger mall, hop in a GRAB car. No need to purchase a vehicle and pay for parking every month. We find that GRAB cars are cheap and very reliable. All the best health care / hospitals are right here.

It's great you're helping your friend to settle down. In Dumaguete I met several senior citizens whom were long term residents of the Check Inn Hotel. These residents have been residing at the Check Inn Hotel for more than 7 years each...why you may ask. Well, they have everything they need there without having to walk more than 2 blocks. Example, money changer is like 50 feet from hotel entrance. I used to send myself money through Moneygram and never needed an ATM or Philippines bank account. Immigration is like 60 feet, same sidewalk as hotel, a bread store, 99 type store within 90 feet, and a supermarket, mall within 2 blocks walking distace and without having to cross the street. Laundry service is across the street. No wonder several expats been living there more than 7 years. The is $500 / month, includes free Filipino breakfast

It once took me 4 hours to get from SM seaside to my apartment in Lapux2. Everyone has different needs and wants so Dumaguete may not be for everyone. Then there are at least 5 large modern hospitals at your disposal if any medical emergency arises. Besides, within the 30-kilometer radius of Metro Cebu, there are modern private and public hospitals. The Cebu Province (excluding the tri-cities as they are independent units) has a province-operated public hospital system with branches all over Cebu for any emergency needs. The main branch is the Vicente Sotto Medical Center located in Cebu City, the largest and most modern public hospital in the Visayas region and is also a referral hospital not only for Cebu-based patients but also in neighboring islands and provinces who can't afford private medical services.

If you start there and you get used to all those amenities you probably are not going to like the smaller towns such a Dumaguete, and others like it. If you want city life, then Cebu and IT Park is the way to go. If you are wanting a smaller town vibe then don't start in Cebu. You should consider moving to Cebu. Cebu has 44 rural cities and towns outside the Metro Cebu area. These rural towns and cities of Cebu offer much lower cost of living than Cebu City yet they're just minutes drive away to both modern conveniences of a big metropolis and natural attractions such as beaches, mountains, waterfalls and islands. Puerto Princesa is a small city and it doesn't have a referral hospital and it has very limited options when it comes to modern conveniences or public transport. Traveling around Palawan is very costly as it has no efficient public transport system and its road network is limited to its main highway along the coast. In Cebu, road network is very extensive as you can practically explore (via car or scooter/bike) the entire island from coast to coast, driving through scenic lush mountains, valleys and hills passing through quaint villages, farm lands, waterfalls, peaks, etc.

It seems people have an idea of what they want, but really don't know, or their perception changes with age and geographic location, buffered by cost and past experience. For example, a person who grew up much outside city on an acre of land in America may like province life more than a person who grew up in the city or congested lot of homes in America. Then again, a person who paid $25k US/acre in property tax may think differently than one who paid $3,000 US/acre property tax. To each their own and may we all find something close to what we think we want.

First of all, both Dumaguete and Cebu have the benefit of not being Manila, which is a shithole - except it's easier to buy imported products there. Newbies should note that Chad is talking about two places in this video, Mactan and Cebu City. It's typically a one hour drive from one to the other, ranging from 30 mins with no traffic to 90 mins with bad traffic. Cebu City has excellent healthcare / hospitals / doctors / nurses / home healthcare providers / pharmacies, etc. Mactan has much less of this good-quality healthcare infrastructure. Mandaue City, which Chad didn't mention, is in between Mactan and Cebu City, and has healthcare pretty much on par with Cebu City, while also being just over a bridge from Mactan. But Mandaue City has terrible traffic.
If one plans to travel around PH and internationally pretty regularly, then being based in Mactan near the airport is a plus. Don't expect much from Mactan beaches. They aren't great, and the local snorkeling and diving isn't very good. Much better places are 3 - 5 hours away by land. Cebu City is 2.5 hours by car to Moalboal, which has excellent beaches and marine life. Cebu City is quite accessible to all of Cebu Island, which has beaches, small mountains, rivers, lakes, etc.
Both Cebu City and Mandaue have many modern condos and other housing options. I would probably not use a realtor for condo rentals, as they will usually act in their own best interest. I would stay in an airbnb or low-cost or mid-cost hotel for a week or two and scout various condos on my own or with a local guide. And I would not make a long-term commitment without staying in a place for a week or two to test it. If that is not possible in the condo you are interested in, at least go there and stand outside it in the early morning, afternoon, evening, and midnight to observe traffic, street noise, and to assess safety, etc.
For people with school-age kids 18 or younger, Cebu City has the best school choices in the area, although there are some options in Mandaue and Mactan too.

Big cities are the same no matter what country and many of the great things about places like Thailand and the Philippines are found mostly in the provinces. If you are older and need quick access to acceptable health care you have to be in Manila or Cebu, and even in Manila you have to be close to a hospital as traffic is bad and there is no 911 with paramedics arriving in under 5 minutes like in most any suburban area of the USA. Thailand is a bit better as even in some of the smaller cities in the provinces they have built new and modern hospitals. If not for my heart problem I would live full time at my home in Quezon City.
