My older sister had a giant poster of Robert in her UW dorm then over her couch in her tiny shared apartment in the U district in Seattle. I always would just look at it in wonder. Then, later I discovered The Cure when a friend I met at a party in San Diego introduced them to me. I still remember sitting in that car at 1:00am, talking, smoking, listening to The Cure with the coolest vibe ever. That giant Robert Smith poster was staring back at me this time. I finally got it. What a life moment. The Cure is unlike any other band. And the wonder for their music never goes away. Like that poster and that moment I sat listening to them.

@@jade-hn4xn I met Robert Smith at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. Apparently he was fond of the restaurant and had a specific table he liked, and the management had messed up and gotten their days wrong, (it was Tuesday and they thought he was coming on Thursday or something like that). Anyway, the manager, completely embarrassed (this is a pretty nice restaurant) comes by and says “I’m so sorry, but we’d like to move you to another table if you could be troubled, and we’ll gladly compensate you for the cost of the meal and any other meal you’d like while you’re in town.” My sister and cousin were both like “Yeah that’s cool.” and I kind of played the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ a bit. “I’m sorry, I just don’t understand. We’ve been here for 15 minutes - we’ve just ordered. Can’t we finish our meal here?” Then out of nowhere Robert Smith shows up next to the manager and says “Paul, these guys can finish. We’ll be at the bar. I got some time.” And I (being a big fan of the Cure) said “Oh wow, uh… I had no idea. Please feel free to give them the table.” Robert was grateful, shook my hand and said thanks, then gave me a card with his number on it and told me to give him a call later. After working up the nerve, I gave him a call that night, and to make a long story short, we had a glorious 11 month love affair, man on man, that I shall never forget. Our bodies intertwined as one, and from the beauty of Morocco, to the French Riviera, to the snorkeling in the Galopagos, Robert Smith and I made glorious gay love to each other on six of the seven continents.

The cure is one of the most creative bands of all time. The music is just insanely good. I remember as a kid watching MTV and seeing Smith and his outfit and hair and thinking; " what the fuck, I love his weirdness"
( I was just as weird but persecuted for it)
When I was 15 I started to date a punk rocker and we would listen to the cure together. God, I still listen to the cure like once a week. So much talent.

    I just noticed:
I was feeling depressed, then found this. It made me HAPPY? 😊
I immediately remembered ALL the lyrics?
I played in a Cure Tribute Band for 7 years as "Simonette." How the fuck did I learn the bass parts for these songs with NO lessons? Work full-time, played in a 2nd band, and play gigs at night DRUNK and spot on (said my drummer)!
Ahhhh! I miss being young, but I still LOVE The Cure! 💋

    • @st0ned2dab0ne
      @st0ned2dab0ne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hahaha. I would have loved to see this cover band. Simonette huh? Simone? Either way....Cheers to that. The Cure's bass tracks are the first that I learned when I started. Though not very difficult, they are just perfect. The bands music revolves round their bass lines, always has. The best band to ever walk the earth does not need to be the most technical, they just need to execute and they do. Simon is like the maestro waving his arms to that orchestra....................................Listening to this version of Fascination Street as I write this and it is exactly what I mean...........Perfection!

I love this version of Wendy Time so much better than the album version or any other live version after this. This version is a bit slower and it just suits the lyrics better. This period of the Cure was their peak I would say. Boris behind the drums and Pearl on Guitar was just magic. I'm not dissing jason because I love him too but borris had that skip a beat thing that he does. Roberts Fender bass VI on Big Hand is just fire. I was lucky enough to see them in 1992 for the first time and now it's been 26 years later i've seen over 30 shows. They are just the best group ever.

This is actually "Play Out, which originally aired as a PPV event on MTV. I bought it once it was released on VHS but no longer have it. I think it actually wore out and I had to throw it away. LOL I've since acquired it on DVD when a friend recorded it for me. I imagine the reason that the title here isn't showing "Play Out" is due to the fact that whenever it's been uploaded with the correct title, TH-cam has taken it down because of copyright issues. Since this is been up here I've been able to send the link to friends who've either never seen it or have not seen it in years and are appreciative of the time spent to upload and share this. :-) So thank you once again!

Okay all. The Cure is one of the best rock bands because they give a shit about the production of their music as well as their audience. Remember back when people cared? About something or anything?
The Cure is the new Grateful Dead because of the fact that their fan-base is now larger than the 'Dead-heads.' Also, a lot of 'Dead-heads' are Cure fans too.
There's so much talk about how the band U2 is the last true and real Rock'n' Roll band and I do really enjoy U2. U2 may have earned that status but The Cure are the most artistic, creative, psychedelic, deep, and true passionate band.
Personally, I was never a fan of the Grateful Dead but I'm aware of the cult following of The Cure and know that the size of their audience is most massive. I'd never equate the music of The Cure with the music of The Grateful Dead. Size of audience is what I'm taking about.
The Cure is the new Grateful Dead. Stop me if I'm wrong.

Slow it down at 0.75 when they are playing (Just Like Heaven)...wow it's very relaxing. Others might think its too slow but you have appreciate and savour it to enjoy it. Personally I think the song is over to quick in normal speed. I think Robert might agree if its played in a melodic way. Not depressing nor boring when it's played at 0.75...that's me just experimenting with the speed button to hear how each Cure song would sound. Some may sound better slow if a certain one is too quick or a certain song thats too quick could sound better slow. Hope that makes sense? 😉

Is this the Same as the US release of Play Out? Or was this a TV broadcast in UK? Not sure if there was a difference. The Cure has recently released an HD digital version of this and it looks and sounds great.
This is one of my favorite periods of The Cure since I started following them in about 1990.

Fast forward to 1 hour 10 if you're in a hurry to get to the MTV Unplugged Rehearsals - which marks the point where they decide they can no longer ignore the camera crew and start clowning about, deliberately "entertaining". First we get what one can only describe as the Sooty And Sweep version of "The Walk", and then comes that over-the-top backstage sequence which is either the highlight or lowlight of the film. (Seconded only by that feeble excuse for a "Chris Parry snowman").
Comment 2: Can anyone remember the Polish-sounding surname of Mick the road-manager? For an allegedly "legendary" character with many tall stories attached to his decades-long career, it's hard to find info on him. (All I remember is he died circa the late '00s).

    • @Grithron2

They're known for being a band of binge-drinkers - how odd that only two Cure-folk have had to consign themselves to Detox Mansions - so here's the Cure Drinking Game - take a shot every time there's a background appearance from Mary or Carol, and another every time someone alludes to Chris Parry by his nickname.

It's rare because it is out of print, meaning they don't produce anymore of these VHS tapes. It was only ever released on VHS in 1991 and probably only had 1 or 2 print runs. You won't find it for sale anywhere except used shops. Of course you can find it here and on bit-torrent for download.
Now a days any type of media isn't rare because you can always download it from somewhere. Back in 1991 it was rare because you could only see it if you had the VHS tape and a VCR. Luckily I still have both ;)

@@JubeProductions I actually own it on Laserdisc as well, though I lack a good laserdisc player, mine is merely adequate. I have all the things they released on Laserdisc, well, at least in the US, as they did release Live in Japan on Laserdisc as well. Also, there were some CDV singles as imports here in the US that I never got. I just have a domestic one of Just Like Heaven.
