- It was a quick trip on the Sunday before Memorial Day 2014, from Tampa to Crawford, to Callahan, to Folkston, to Baldwin, to Ocala and back home.
Find me at RailfanDanny on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. To purchase any of my DVDs, log on to railfandanny.com - Thank you.
I chuckled when you said the defect detector went off from the lightning strike.
Your videos simply do not fail
Great shots Danny like the drone shots that show different prospective, other than that storm you had an amazing outing, thanks
Danny, discoverd your channel by accident, what a blessing! I was born in Key West but mostly raised in St.Petersburg. I now live in North Carolina but frequently visit my family in Florida, my route down takes me by many of your railfanning locations. It's so great to see these in your videoss. They are of the highest quality and the narration is beyond compare. Thanks for sharing!
Wow!That's a nice compliment indeed!! It's gratifying to hear that folks appreciate my kind of videos. I hope to work my way into the Carolinas and over to Kentucky and Tennessee this year so stay tuned.DH
The quadcopter helped to make this my favorite video to date. Well done!
I saw that seafood and it reminded me of our Shrimp King restaufant here in NJ. I enjoyed the drone shots and your crisp explanation of the work tbat was comlpleted on the various sections. You must have been a teacher in another life.
Another marvelous video Danny. Makes me excited about my trip to Florida later this year. I am going to see my friend Stanley Fitzgerald. Stanley's a fourth generation railroader. He hired on the Seaboard System in 1981, and now he's with CSX. His dad worked for the Seaboard Coast Line, Seaboard System and CSX before he retired in 2001. And his grandfather worked for the Seaboard Air Line and Seaboard Coast Line before retiring in 1978. And his great grand father worked for the Atlantic Coast Line until the mid '50s before he retired himself. So, it's safe to say, he's got railroading in his DNA.
Great vid Danny, love the food review. I always wonder about those one off restaurants I see between Folkston and Jacksonville.
Lightning set off the DD - that's interesting.
Why is it I'm always hungry after watching your videos ? Some of those lunches I can smell right through the transmission and fairly cheap too ! Really pleased with quality or your videos . Excellent camera placement , both audio & video quality , and segment style . I particularly like that you don't make us watch every single car go past on every single train . Your narrations are helpful to those of us who want to learn more about railroading in general . You really know your stuff !! Keep making them & we'll keep watching them !
Love the quad-copter!! Amazing new footages! :-D
Love finding Danny's videos! At about :50, enjoyed seeing the Ashley furniture containers. They're headquartered in my neck of the woods.
Danny you are so informative and I love how you narrate your videos you are a very good narrator you would be a good documentary narrator good job man I love your rail fan videos peace out have a great day
I live in Jacksonville and we live in San Marco, right next to the tracks and boy do I love it and I'm 18 years old.
The train after NS 330 was Q601-23. They were originally due out of Waycross on Friday, but didn't leave until that morning.
The quadcopter puts a new perspective on railfanning. Great video!
Another excellent film, thanks Danny.
Danny; You have truly mastered your art. I enjoy every production.Conrail still has some colors pop up now and then.Spent some of my younger. years making the cuts as extra brakeman.
I've long enjoyed watching railfanning videos, with a little bumping and so-so audio being the norm. Now I'm kind of spoiled seeing videos produced by a professional who knows what he's doing and can put a polish on a video.
It might be an Oldie but it was still Gold.
Yeah, I just re-watched this. I'd forgotten how good the traffic was back then.
I enjoy your videos very much particularly the commentary. The drone shots are spectacular! Keep up the good work and I'll keep enjoying. Thanks.
You would be correct at the end: you count the couplers on container trains. An articulated set counts as one car. :D
Real railroading from a model railroading perspective. Excellent!
Amazing Danny... taking railfanning to a whole nutha level! Well done!
Another fine video from you. I love the drone shots they are so fine and steady.
In Typically great style! As always,I enjoyed the video. Thank you Mr.H.
Another great video Danny. Awesome quad copter shots too. Also, you are correct, count the couplers for number of cars. Each section of one well car can be counted separately for Haz Mat placement purposes, but the train list will show one car. Thanks for the great video and the quad copter shots.
Danny, WOW, great narrative and those overhead shots are unreal. GREAT video.
Great video Danny! Love the UP SD70ACes at Crawford and Folkston!
Amazing work!!! I am so proud to be a subscriber of you, keep it up!
Thanks for subscribing!
Many thanks John Buckley! I hoped you'd get a look at what I shot.
DH
Distant Signal I subscribed, and I always love your videos!
+Distant Signal For the record, that boxcar passing by at 3:31 is one of the ex-Amtrak express boxcars.
Northfolk Southern train 229 Columbus Ohio to Jacksonville FL
Never thought lightning could set of a defect detector.
Danny you have taken railfaning to new heights! LOL Great video, the overhead views are great! Thanks!
Love your videos. Just don't take a long time for the next one, lol! Always looking for them.
Love these kind of videos keep them coming please
Danny I watch for trains but always wait to see what you get for lunch. Lol
Thanks, we are in Wauchula, FL in bone valley so going there will be a good road trip!!
Good as ever. Thanks again.
Mr danny I have to say you make some really really great railfan videos. Csx and ns is my two favorite lines. My dad use to take me to the c of g (central of ga) which Is now ns here in columbus ga and I love the narration too! Thanks for the videos keep coming
Great video, clean sharp shots, thanks for posting.
Looks like you had quite a time on your trip. I was at Crawford in January and can't believe how much has changed since then! We had a Cedar River seafood in Cairo but it closed down; didn't realize any were still open. Keep the great material coming!
Will do, Charles, thanks! And congrats to you and the Mrs!
Another amazing video, Danny. I always watch your videos before I go on a big railfanning trip, when I can't get to sleep the night before, I'll stay up all night catching up on what I missed.
Thanks Matt!Sounds like you're getting ready for another trip.. :-))DH
Yes I was, and it was a good one. 15 trains, 2 meets, lots of foreign power, and an SD75M leading.
Great stuff Danny. That drone thing you got really helps with the views esp. the ones at Crawford and Baldwin diamonds.
great video and info as always Mr Harmon.Keep em comming.
***** Thanks very much, trainwatcher166! Glad you enjoy the content.
Danny, Great footages!
Love your drone shots!!! Your videos are great!!!!
Thanks Sam. I'm certainly no camera pilot. Still learning the the thing. Sure is a lot of fun though.
DH
Great aerial work!
Danny always enjoy your videos and I see you've ventured into aircopters
Great video. No question that the drone gives you an unobstructed view and a different angle. You can really take in the whole crossings.
Great video, Danny.
Q458 (CSX 7383) is running forward with red marker lights again, Usually reserved for pusher service running backwards. That's not the first time that hogger has had the red markers on.
Just wanted today that it was nice meeting you in Folkston and getting a photo with you. Iam a fan of you videos am love to watch all the time. Love the way that drone work. My you tube is 1856 tmo thanks
Yes, it was great meeting you, too. It's really crazy how many folks I meet who've seen my videos. Thanks very much for your compliments. See you next time in Folkston.
Great video Danny!
Great video danny, Happy holidays
Great catches, Danny!
Excellent video & Danny Harmon is a great narrator .
loved it another great video
Great video,really enjoyed it.
Another instant like. Great vid as always.
Fantastic video! With that NS container train out of Columbus, that had to be Rickenbacker. The yard set-up is terrible, an NS yard job is over a crossing for about half an hour at a time!
At 2:22 I noticed a sign on the NS route indicating an end of rule 261 territory (track signaled in both directions) and the beginning of rule 271. I wasn't sure what this rule meant until I checked the NS rulebook. 271 is not in the NORAC 10th edition, which would have governed movements at this time. Rule 271 adds to rule 261 with "mandatory directive authorizes movement... track authority rules authorize train and engine movements and ABS rules apply. ABS signals indicate condition of the block." So it's bi-directional signaling but not CTC, it seems.
Danny, you seem correct on counting couplers on articulated well cars and spline cars. When I was up in Ayer last October, Pan Am AY-1 pulled two 5-well units out to the old Ford plant, and came back with three units. They reported over the radio how many articulated units they had, not individual wells. My guess is CSX does the same. They were hauling 40' containers with the tops cut off to haul trash. In an interesting link to your video, MEC 7835 is a former CSX C40-8W, but it was built in '92 and I'm not sure if it was former Conrail - it doesn't seem to be. PAR bought a number of Dash 8s from CSX in 2018, and in 2021 we are waiting for STB approval for CSX to buy out Timothy Mellon's railroad - the former Guilford Transportation System - and maybe retire the Dash 8s for a second time. It's the same with the CMQ up in Maine: CP bought it and will eventually retire their SD40Fs again.
Great video, Danny! Dig the drone angle. did you pick up the audio from another cam?
Yes, Tolga. I rolled on my video camera on a tripod near the tracks and swapped that audio into my timeline. The audio from the GoPro on the copter is just wind noise.
Awesome catches Danny
Another great video.
Wow those trains are so busy
Another fine video, very nice!
Many thanks!
great catches
really appreciate your commentary
Keep it on
Mi
Great Video!
nice video danny, keep up the great work.
-David.
Great Shots
The diamond, high impact, heavy tonnage. Great eye candy!
NS209 is probably one of the MAIN trains that puts together FEC101.
So what you saw there, Is what I saw sometime in may :P
Very interesting! It makes sense. I hope to shoot some FEC action later this week. Thanks!
keep up the good work my friend
Great video!
I could just imagine that defect detector going off on the radio like "CSX, equipment, defect, detector. Milepost, (insert mile number). No defects. Total axels, 4.. Train, speed, 1. 7. 9. MPH. End of transmission."
Nice video Danny!!
Quadcopters can be flown over RR property? Interesting. Another cool video Danny.
On the ex-Conrail locomotive #7383, I saw that his marker lights were on!
part of this video that keeps me curious is why Q458 was crossed over to track two at Callahan rather than using the South Callahan crossover. Maybe they were working on the crossover there? I know that the crossover at South Callahan has been there since at least the days of the SCL. I always assumed that it was for moving trains coming northbound out of the way of trains coming on or off the Callahan Sub.
Awesome videos. I am going to try and hit those spots. I'm in sun city center and have not tot to do much railfaning since moving here.
Yeah, those are the standard spots. Let me know if you find any better ones out there!DH
will do.
Great Job with the videos!!! I gotta get down there when I have the time. Been to bust and forced to stick to my local spots here in Wisconsin. I have a few videos up if you want to check them out.
Wow, the lighting set off the detector! So was it hit by lightning?
Great vid as usual! In addition to your quadcopter, did you get a new car? That wasn't the old gray Expedition hood we were looking over!
LOVED your over the shot trains! How do you do that?
Can’t catch them all Danny!
ive only seen 1 NS in florida all my life it was a blue one
In my opinion, headlights above the cab look way better than on the nose
Another awesome video. One question: how do you get such detailed info on the trains you see?
Thanks Brian. The info comes from various sources, much of it I've collected over the years and some from railfan friends who are very knowledgeable of this stuff.
I ran into a storm last Saturday after railfanning.
Is that microwave repeater site behind the diamonds CSX's, or someone else's? Weird if it's CSX, as I didn't think they used MW anymore...
LOVE the video Danny .... What kind of quad copter is that you're using?
+FDNY8231 I use a DJI Phantom 2 with a GoPro Hero3+ camera
Danny, Is 301 still one long speed trap like it use to be? Great catches and Like the overhead shots from the helo. Wonder how long it will be before the Government puts a hault to that?
I think we saw NS 229 on the Sandusky district in ohio
this is a good video like the sea food
Northfolk Southern train 330 Jacksonville FL to Macon GA
It's been a long time Danny. Are you okay? Are you in the process of making a new video?
does anyone hear that strange bell on the UP ACe at 7:36??? Sounds like an old first generation diesel bell.
Q170 17 cars. Counting Intermodal can be tricky. from what ive gathered ive seen Q045 with 7 cars... as the crew stated, which counts each set as one car. I have known other rail buffs who count each individual well car, which the counts note *each well* whereas crews and yards count the entire set of articulation as one car.
+Torice Sullivan As there is only a coupler at each end, it only counts as one car. Same as the old two-unit diners
