    "The hydraulics could be released manually"! I think they just cut the hydraulic line to the stuck jack ...you can see the oil spurting out at 1:20, and 1:40! Whatever works! This could have been much more troublesome if the problem jack would have been further towards the ends, the ship would have launched one end first and certainly would have sustained damage...

      Ships always take on ballast water when empty. otherwise, they're far too top heavy.
      You know safety is going too far, when you need a hard hat to walk under a ship on the launch rails. Like it'll do much good if it falls on you. You'd be Marvin the Martian. a hard hat on a pair of boots.

      @@tryithere I know they use ballast. The reason I said it was of course since you could pretty much see the whole of the bow propellers so they would not have got any work done until it was way lower in the water which would require a heck of a lot of weight, and such I said not built to be empty.

      @ablemagawitch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bandicoot803 Pretty common, with the amount of crap in the water at docks, you 'ld want to stop the big stuff and hopefully any person from going through the blades. Those bow thruster blades are expensive and are a semi-custom form to the design (plus they are always tweaking the angles for more propulsion, 3 different performance rates would be bad) .... Not an easy off the shelf replacement part, nor an in the ocean replacement job. Also if Bow thrusters are in use and a Tug goes under ( Captain/ crew should have paid attention to those bow thruster marks on the hull and there is lots of information on the side of ships for Tugs that they need to know about for where to and not to push but I digress.....) you want it held off the expensive props, the shafts, the motors least you create a non water tight seal . For a sideways boat prop the dam things get pretty complex and bloody expensive.
      It wouldn't surprise me that the protective caging also was designed to help with streamlining the water flow when the bow is going forward so it doesn't create extra drag. Those bulbous bows under the water are extreme engeering for performance on par with formula one racing. There a great shipping industry highlights email news letter from gcaptain.com/ That shows the good and the bad for when an unstoppable ship meats an unmovable object be another traveling ship, a pier or the Big Cranes that all go down like those snow walking camels in Star Wars Empire strikes back.... Have fun searching their channel up and seeing all that "Ship Happens"

      @@Bandicoot803 Modern rudders, twin rudders with independent control, twin props with better engineered controlled. The Bow and Stern thrusters ( IE: Carnival (and all others) Modern Mammoth Cruise Ships that are way bigger than the Titanic can spin a circle very quickly to turn around in small tight ports & harbors.), let alone modern lifeboats......
      Sadly all modern safety came out of the Titanic's sinking. It always takes tragic loss of life to force regulations for safety, until enough people die and especially in mass the agencies involved in regulation won't or can't do enough because of bought politicians from these (insert industry here) companies. Fire codes and Sprinkler systems didn't happen by chance, it took many clubs full of people being burned alive for their to even be fire exits and more than 1 door only one side being good enough, now multiple doors that have to open outwards(flow of traffic) can't be locked, must be able to evacuate a whole large building through any side of exit/emergency doors in under so many minutes,
      Changes like not using basically Napalm to waterproof your circus tents didn't happen to after The Hartford Circus Fire (USA July 6th 1944 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartford_circus_fire or th-cam.com/video/iojxmDI0zAE/w-d-xo.html Especially see the sad story of a child we still haven't figured out her true name known has by her death Jane Doe number "Little Miss 1565 " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartford_circus_fire#Little_Miss_1565 Little Miss 1565 has spent over half century not being known by her true name among other unclaimed bodies, entire families were killed, kids that were street urchins with no one to care or claim them......) where the canvas has just had fresh melted paraffin spread on it dissolved in gasoline for waterproofing. Which it drip burning down and then entire sheets of burning canvas rained down on top of the crowd of many kids and moms. The rear exit was blocked by the Big Cat cages and it was so many kids with burnt flesh they were hard to recognize. Hartford Connecticut didn't allow the circus back until after the turn of the century. Just as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus was dieing off itself from a change in public entertainment interests. It is black day in the entertainment industry yet in 2003 we had teh "The Station Night Club" with band "Great White" fire killing 200 people video from the show and building going up th-cam.com/video/bknYdprA9ug/w-d-xo.html Pay attention to how long you actually have and how everyone went for how they came in. If you go to live shows or any public gathering that could save your life.
      Sorry I digressed so much on safety, we really have come along way in short time and yet we have so far to go because everyone does it half ass assuming everyone before them and after will do it to full safety codes and above and beyond, sadly the cycle of great lost repeats in 1st world countries and 3rd world countries.

    Nothing mayor dude; At the end, didn't they achieved their objective? The bloody ship got to in the water safely!

    I know nothing about ship launches but it seems to me there would be a lot of scraped metal on the bottoms of these ships using this type of launch.

      Tom Boyte The ship rests on triangle blocks that roll down the slip ramps fixed to the pier (1:20). The tow straps seen were attached so once the ship was floating, they wouldn't sink to the bottom. That is the piece shown at 2:16 being recovered.

    Title of this video is wrong. Not to use this kind of technics to attract the viewers.
    However, the ship launching is good.👍A successful event.

    Amazing how such a big mass of metal somes to just sit on the water.

      The ship isn't done being fitted out yet so it sits high in the water anyway, but it's floating on inches of water here. Maybe a few feet at the most which is also amazing.

    The guy had to unhook a hose from the hydraulic cylinder so it would release, you see him run as it sprays fluid all over, they didn't plan it that way, so it did go wrong, I thought it was interesting, but I also like watching paint dry.

    That dude with the radio was close. Spray of oil looked like "hydraulics being released manually" probably was a cut hose.

    I’ve always wondered if the Captain- or at least the First Mate - is in the wheelhouse during launch. Potentially dangerous; I’ve seen videos of the darn thing capsizing in a launch gone completely wrong. But I’m sure the seamen are prepared for the worst as they hope for the best. So, are they at station?

    • @HD1080ide
      @HD1080ide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      At least at this shipyard, nobody is onboard the ship during the launch. The ship is controlled from outside by tugboats, only.
