It took me forever to figure out that the slow, low, deep voice is singing a line from the love song "Lorena". Michael Martin Murphy and the 97th Regimental String Band have both done outstanding versions of that song.

It was actually Stephen Dubinsky, of Santa Fe. He held every rank in our unit, the 4th Texas Mounted Volunteers, from private to Lt. Col., and was an inspirational leader. He was an absolute master of Hardee's Tactics. I know that was Steph's singing becuase I was there, across the fire from him, and I show up in several scenes. I hven't seen this old production in years, and, my God, there are so many old friends who have left empty chairs! Deo Vindici, my brothers.
As a critical comment, the narration is not perfect, but is quite accurate in the important points.

There has always been a privately built marker at this battle site along I-25 just before the Pecos/Glorieta exit. No state monument or anything. One land owner was digging a foundation for a new house and dug into an unmarked grave site of soldiers. So obviously many in uniform died there. This battle site is mostly forgotten.

The Confederate soldiers who were buried in that mass grave were exhumed and reburied in the National Cemetery, in Santa Fe. Only three were identified: Ebenezer Hannah, JSL Cotton, and Maj. John Shropshire. The Major's remains were returned to his family in Kentucky, where he rests between his parents.

New Mexico was the hardest part. If they had made it to Colorado, they would've found much more support, as roughly half the CO population were southerners who went there to mine and seek fortune.

At least one other comment mentions Sergio Leone. The director had great success with his first two westerns and was fronted a large amount of money by United Artists. As a WW2 survivor, he wanted to make an anti war about the US Civil War but that couldn’t be a Western...or could it? This campaign provided the perfect background and notice that Eastwood only becomes the Man With No Name at the very end after finding a Confederate poncho(Confederates frequently used and tailored blankets like a poncho, so it is reasonable that such a garment in New Mexico Territory would look just like what you see).

Connor Leyden the sand creek massacre happened during the civil war. what that man did was atrocious and is the absolute definition of a war crime. I'm sure his actions at Glorieta pass and Apache canyon may have been honorable according to the conduct of the war with the southern confederacy. but ordering the massacre of women and children is no suck honorable deed. what has infected Nate's head in order for him to think that there is a name and honor that can be restored is beyond psychotic. its inhuman. Nate Marshall you need to get your head right son.

    • @tonybarde2572

STLOU87 Well, they wanted to kill a bunch of people to gain their place in history and so I guess Chivington influenced them. Like Harris and Klebold, Chivington wanted to have an important place in history by killing Indians. Harris and Klebold also wanted publicity. But their role models were the Espinosa boys, Felipe and Jose. The Espinosa boys were robbers and murderers in Colorado in 1863 and killed 32 people. Like Harris and Klebold, the Espinosa boys were driven by a need of revenge. This until Tom Tobin hunted them down and killed Felipe and Jose.
