How To Draw A Portrait Likeness Through Matching Values

  • What I've discovered over the years is that being able to match values plays such an important role in capturing a likeness. Even if you are able to draw all of the measurements of the models head correctly, if the values are off, the likeness won't be there.

    hi there i recently started to watch some of your tutorial , really great videos thanks , one thing i think that could make it better is to draw the photoshop values on another layer and then hide the image to show the students how the piece would look without the refrence or the eyes ,just the basic form and shape of the face with value . and thanks again for the great tutorials

    I'm sorry the likeness here is not a problem of shading. Proportions and symetry is not there that's the very first problem...

    I strongly disagree. In a good caricature, as well in many famous portrait masterworks, there is no relationship whatsoever with the model’s values, but rather something else, which possibly escapes definition, but captures the essence of likeness of the model. Maybe some key proportions that make a person’s expression and are retained even in a caricature.
