  • Purchasing phones in Bali is not the same as at home.
Most phones are pre-paid and even contract phone accounts dont come with a free phone.
Prepare to spend an hour or two getting a new phone sorted...

✌I bougt a IRP 800.000 phone and a local SIM on the sellers name (terima kasi🙏 nice friendly seller) and IRP 500.000 DATA and put the phone on english language and used the phone as Mobile hotspot for my own phone from home 👍
Before I left Bali I gave the indonesian phone away to a nice Balinees person.

Interesting, I didn't realise you had to pay tax on a phone that you were bringing into the country if you choose to reside here. For my trip in January I can have dual sims on my iPhone so I accessed my Thailand Dtac service without any problem.s The Oppo phones seem to be getting better and better and are not too expensive. Similar things happen in Thailand - also takes ages and so many processes - keeps people in a job - I see three people helping you here!

Actually in LA, the Samsung store takes hours also. Samsung does this by design.

Hi Muzza, we're coming over in a week's time for 2 weeks from UK, do we need to do this sim swap thing or can we just turn roaming off and use WiFi? Seems confusing

Not many places to get wifi except from your hotel. Most buy a temporary sim. $20 and have full data. Contact kw tours as they donate a 5kg of rice for every sim if you mention me

iPhones are supposed to be the same price around the world. They won’t sell you the same iPhone for a certain price at one location and a different price at another. The company has the phone cost the same price in one country as compared to another. That is if you are looking at exactly the same phone at different stores.

I bought a phone in Malaysia and come to learn that it’s made for Malaysian area and Russia, but cannot use it in USA. It was in 2020 that I bought the phone and returned to America and had not been back to that part of the world. The phone I bought in Malaysia is worthless to me here in USA. Lol. Hopefully it will still work whenever I return to that part of the world.

We can so relate to this video especially from the 10 minute mark onwards 😖your spot on. Here is our experience buying two new phones in Bali. In Australia, on line we register our IPhone in readiness to convert for permanent use, thinking on arrival we just need a sim card change over as the phone was old and it didn’t warrant tax. We were wrong, we need to go to the customs counter to complete transfer IN the airport. So if you leave the airport you have approximately 6 weeks to go immigration to switch your phone over to work in Indonesia,BUT as well as a number of documents you need your boarding pass!!!!! …So off to Ibox an iPhone retailer & TELKOMSEL office = 3.5 hours of fun. Nearly 5 months on our 2 old Australian iPhone still work fine without a SIM card can do everything on them but only on wifi. Our experience, but yours could be very different. It’s Bali 😆

If your number expires after 3 months you can buy a new sim card number for $5 bucks and you can have 2 companies dual network telekomsel and smartfrei d let's say but when recharge you must manually switch it over.
3g for a phone absolutely stupid.
Keep your oz phone buy a $200 to $300 lokal phone.

This rule is crazy to be honest.
A work colleague was stopped at the airport because of her phone and was forced to pay duty because it was a newer model and she was Indonesian returning from holidays.

Crazy rule. The funniest thing she purchased the phone on facebook market place for $300aud then was stung for $220 tax for the phone.
On top of this they did a full search of her baggage just looking for other taxable items, the whole process took over an hour. You would think maybe they would have some better things to seach .
