  • In this episode, from November 23, 1964, four young men compete for $5000 in the finals of an Ford Aurora Table Top Racing Car Championship. The actual prize was a Ford Mustang and a $2000 scholarship. Mustang was of course a brand new and highly successful car for Ford. The race is officiated by one of Formula 1's greatest drivers, Sir Stirling Moss. Aurora sold a line of Model Motoring slot cars with Moss' name on them.

That was cool. I grew up in the sixties, what a great time. I had a slot car track myself..

This is so cool. Reminds me of my younger days collecting and racing AFX and Tyco slot cars. Great video!

Incredibly hard secret to guess. Stirling Moss did a great job here.

Thanks for posting! I've seen ads from early 1964 for Aurora's big challenge in which contestants were to qualify by beating Fireball Roberts' time. Sadly, he died later that year in a Fiery crash.

This is too cool. I used to have the Stirling Moss Aurora HO track. It was my first race set, that was given to me by my Uncle Bill. We spent many hours in my basement, my friend Randy and Cory's basement and occasionally, my cousin Steve's basement. Tyco had the best cars. I lost track at how much money I spent on all my gear. Love the banked turns. First cars were a Jaguar and Ford GT 40. My favorite and fastest was a Tyco Chaparal.

I did my local hobby shop edition of this competition. Lost the race that counted because I went off track a couple of times, but won the "modified" race that was just local. used the same chassis with adifferent body and dual rear wheels. I won because I found the speed that the car would do the twisty parts and held the controler steady, never leaving the track - everybody else did jump the track.

I loved Thunderjet 500. Not so fast to be unrealistic. More skills required to drive them

That trophy was huge. Almost as big as the kid who won it.

Wow, that's cool! I still have all my "Model Motoring" stuff. People think these old sets are boring because the cars are so slow. But ya know, these old set took skill! The new slot car sets are whats boring. They require no real skill, you just hold the controller wide open. The magnets are so strong holding the cars to the track. They do indeed go blindingly fast, but require no skill to race. Now the old stuff actually required skill to go as fast as you can AND stay on the track.

In my opinion, the Aurora T-Jets with the Pancake motor were the bst cars to race...you had to have a certain degree of skill to race them. later on and even on into today, the cars have magnets to keep them on the track. Might as well just switch on the transformer and let them run by themselves...what fun is that.
