Almost 60 years here. I was blessed to be in the San Jose area (California) with a long wooden race track. I used to beg old and worn rails, motors, anything they were throwing out anyway. Soldered a lot of dragsters together, and launched quite a few across the room. This track is so fast I can’t see how you would enjoy running on it outside of practice laps.
I slowed this down to 25% speed and it appeared took take about 6 secs per lap, so in real time about 1.25 secs is the actual lap time. The track looks like it's maybe 30-40m long. Say 35. So these cars are doing something like 30m per second. Which is about 100 kph or 62 mph. The standard Scalextric car model scale is 1:32 which is apparently the global standard for slot car racing. So the speed of these cars to scale is approximately 3,200 kph or 1,988 mph. This is comparable with the fastest jet aircraft ever built, the Lockhead SR-71 Blackbird recon plane, which can reach 3,540 kph or 2,200 mph. You wouldn't see that if it flew over you house either.

@Bob Dobalina They are about the same size as a standard 12v motor you find in toys (about 1 1/4 inches long by 3/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch thick). Except these have extremely strong magnets and instead of a metal housing they have an alloy frame. Because they are so high performance the track voltage has to be just right as does the gearing or they burn out. The shine you see on the track is a mixture of white spirit and a gum substance so the cars stick in corners. At speed the clear sides fold out because of air pressure giving even more down force so it's a critical balancing act.

@@paulgoff5068 ? What are you talking about? The pick-up for conductivity to propel the electric motor has always been copper! This has always been done this way. What was changed is the positioning of the magnets to stick to the track. It's simple and basic do you understand now? Take a look at the underside of an old slot car compared to the new one. They took the challenge away just like the world dumbed down Nintendo games and made them easier. As a reference.
1975 we reached scale speeds over 700 mph with Parma chassis an cheeta electric motors. I can still feel the hot trigger of my controller, wearing a blister on my finger!
I was a slot car racer in the 1960s. What was needed in slot car racing was the same thing that took place in actual real car racing: limitations on motors, controls, tires, etc. Over the decades an innovation made one car faster than the others and so to catch up and eventually go ahead, other innovations had to be found. The result after 50 years can be seen in the video. The same phenomenon took place in actual, real motor racing. Finally a limit was put on things. The only difference is that an absurdly fast slot car will not pose a danger to the driver.
Racing is pretty save these days, at the top levels. Horrible wrecks, and the drivers walk away. Deaths and injuries are rare, even in spindly open-wheel cars.
My car fell into another slot while that guy was putting his back on the same slot. He hit the gas, not knowing my car was on his lane, and as I put my hand down to grab it it took off and a chassis wire stabbed right through my finger and out the other side by 25mm.
Oooo my its a lot of fun, and it takes a lot of concentration to only focus on your car. Thats the key only focus on your car and what it's doing over time you become one with the car and can actually see your car lifting of that track at times.
How is this even possible? I remember back in the days of Aurora Model Motoring (HO scale) and Strombecker (1/32 scale) we had to slow down for corners. This is insane! And pretty cool, I have to admit, but I have no idea what things make this possible.
This is wild! I raced slot cars back in the early 60's, 55 years ago, and our cars moved like thick molasses compared to these modern ones. Can't imagine what technology they are using to reach such speeds, and, to keep them on the track. Even at our slow speeds, we were constantly crashing. This is amazing! How on earth do they even know which car is theirs. Incredible! :)
When I was about 10 I had a cheap track and bad cars, so I directly attached the wires from the track to a plug wich made them run on 220v… made the cars at least 3 times faster. To be able to keep such a speed I had to removed the plastic roofing of the cars leaving just a thin piece of plastic with a motor and some wheels. Those were great times, played around with that for weeks on end with my twin brother.
They were doing around 2.3 seconds on a king track which is 155ft, and they weren't using glue. The art has advanced even since the 1990's when that kind of time was only possible with the sticky stuff. Obviously, the unlimited class as well.
+Jussi Kämäräinen Group 7 motors? I raced NASCAR class with flexi chassis and 16D motors, a lot slower (and cheaper), but still a lot of fun. I miss my slot car racing days.

Jesus they've gotten fast. Did This back in the 90s as a kid and kinda forgot it exists in the public eye until this popped up
TH-cam at 3 AM : " _Hey, you tryin' to sleep?_
Me : "Yes, shut up now"
TH-cam : " _How about watching some _*_Speedy bois_*_ to help you sleep?_ "
Me : " *ah, one more video is fine.* "
Gifarly .M. Afdalash i swear thats so true😂😂😂 at 3 am
3:46 guys gimme high five pls
Akif Al Hakim i saw binch of assholes high 5 the dude
Akif Al Hakim
ROFL
Akif Al Hakim he was like "I need this high five, people are watching!"
포카칩 대갈통 보면 한소리 하는 박원순
holllly sad shit
Last thing I raced was my TCR Racing set. These cars today are traveling at the speed of light !
How do they determine who wins? One way is to allocate to each a certain amount of amp hours and count the laps.
Where are the SlowMo Guys when you need them ?
CyberChrist lol
CyberChrist ... i watched the video at 2X speed
Very boring!
goodone
In the end of the video :) Sorry for the quality, video is from 2010.
Cant see anything....
ken - Are you serious? Even if I set it to 0.25 it's ridiculously fast and nowhere near realistic speed relative to the scale...
I can see them just fine, but then again, I used to race Group 7s. .
Stane Berghaus ...try 2x speed its better😂
It's just motion blur. In real life (or if the video were uploaded at a higher framerate) the cars are followable.
Merci cordialement, Johan.
This awesome!! I’m so jealous. My jeep cjs never went this fast. lol My last track had a loop or two if I remember correctly?? Use to be so much fun.

My cat when I play with a laser pointer
Damnit, I did not expect such SPEED. I was waiting to see the cars..... instead, I saw FLASH in reality.
They ruined slot car racing when they used magnets that were way too strong.
Earth to Drakkor, Earth to Drakkor.
No magnet downforce is involved, the pick up braids are copper.
😯
Is this a race track or a hadron collider?
I was a slot car racer in the 1960s. What was needed in slot car racing was the same thing that took place in actual real car racing: limitations on motors, controls, tires, etc. Over the decades an innovation made one car faster than the others and so to catch up and eventually go ahead, other innovations had to be found. The result after 50 years can be seen in the video. The same phenomenon took place in actual, real motor racing. Finally a limit was put on things. The only difference is that an absurdly fast slot car will not pose a danger to the driver.
I used to race slot cars back in the 60's... They had a track like this in Redondo beach California.
No, but one of the little bastards could easily chip a tooth if it flew off the track and hit somebody in the mouth going that fast lol XD
Racing is pretty save these days, at the top levels. Horrible wrecks, and the drivers walk away. Deaths and injuries are rare, even in spindly open-wheel cars.
Tell the guy that takes one of these cars to the groonies.
My car fell into another slot while that guy was putting his back on the same slot. He hit the gas, not knowing my car was on his lane, and as I put my hand down to grab it it took off and a chassis wire stabbed right through my finger and out the other side by 25mm.
Imagine having cats watching the race
😂
🤣
LMAO
That's about the only thing that can make this entertaining.
@@jeremyc9593 Says the guy who searched the video. Gtfo. 😅
I need to see an eye doctor, mine's too slow.
I like the part where I can’t see the cars, but pretend to.
LOL, you can't even see them, what fun is that?
+Croozer A lot of the fun is in building and modding the cars.
+Croozer Now you see what EXCELLENCE looks like... yet you not worthy of seeing it... wait... I couldn't see it either.
+Andrew Jackson i did this for a winter-serious money can be spent-best to look for a used car from somebody getting out
Oooo my its a lot of fun, and it takes a lot of concentration to only focus on your car. Thats the key only focus on your car and what it's doing over time you become one with the car and can actually see your car lifting of that track at times.
jollen Allen It's like with R/C racing.
This track is the same one that was in Milwaukee,WIS. Back in 1976 that I used to race on.
How is this even possible? I remember back in the days of Aurora Model Motoring (HO scale) and Strombecker (1/32 scale) we had to slow down for corners. This is insane! And pretty cool, I have to admit, but I have no idea what things make this possible.
TH-cam algorithm gettin me everytime.
“Why am i seeing this?”
“Oh... so are 24M people”
This is wild! Incredible! :)
I raced pro in the 60's and the track record for a lap on that track was 4.50 seconds LMVYAO!!!
They ruined slot car racing when they used magnets that were way too strong.
@@davidmerrick467 you raced pro in the 60s? how old are you now?? if you were 20 years old then you'd be over 80 lmao
My cars go like 99% slower than those cars go😂
any idea what the actual and equivalent speeds are?
They were doing around 2.3 seconds on a king track which is 155ft, and they weren't using glue. The art has advanced even since the 1990's when that kind of time was only possible with the sticky stuff. Obviously, the unlimited class as well.
how can they concentrate with the cars going so fast, how fast are they going anyway????
+Steventhe2nd normally 50-100mph, top speed over 100mph
Jussi Kämäräinen you still think it's hard to concentrate with those kind of speeds
+Jussi Kämäräinen Group 7 motors? I raced NASCAR class with flexi chassis and 16D motors, a lot slower (and cheaper), but still a lot of fun. I miss my slot car racing days.
+dbd31463 your never too old to revisit...js
thinknif one car jumped out of trank and hit someone in the head
Imagine having a small camera attached to those cars
I would vomit
You would just see an amorphous blur.
A small camera and having to use FPV
@@RandyPrimus Refer to previous comment about vomiting
You would just pass away do to excessive visual stimulation
TH-cam's playback speed only goes down to 0.25 which kinda ruins it for me. So if you guys would post an actual slow mo version i'd be greatly appreciative, thanks!
1:08 "FINALLY"
*2 seconds later*
"FORGET IT"
That was quite funny tho xD
i didnt even know what this was, i just clicked on it and holy shit those cars are fast
Same dude
