Totally agree with your thoughts on this new lens. OM system want to continue to attract wildlife photographers within the niche market they target and this proven lens with fantastic reach and decent speed is a shrewd move in my view.
Stafford, your work with extreme bridge cameras has always been amazing. I just put together my top five entries for an end-of-the-year birding contest and the focal lengths used were 312mm's, 640mm's (and this one could have been tighter), 800mm's, 1,200mm's and 2,000mm's. MFT images hold up a better than most people realize up to ISO 3,200 so I think some innovative, light, long glass would be welcome in the MFT/birding community. I already own the original Lumix 100-400 and have been very happy with its performance but I'm now considering the new Lumix 100-400mm and a 2x converter (the original doesn't take converters) just to get out to the territory that has been the domain of my Canon SX60hs for years.
Bruce always good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words and hope your 5 entries do well. I am in the middle of testing out some m43 and considering moving back to m43. I been waiting on the canon 200-800 for over 3 months and this news hit me about the 150-600. Out of all the systems the m43 mount has my vote for fun to use but with the 150-600 the extra reach now equals and sometimes will exceed the other brands with a bunch of other benefits outside of image quality. I am still testing the olympus 100-400 with a 2x converter and initial impressions are very good. Now with the 150-600 which should also take the converter gives some extreme long distance. Also lets not forget the 2x converter in digital form that the g9 and olympus cameras have. So this could be a new landing point for me. I thought about the new 100-400 Panasonic as well as it is much smaller than the olympus version. Either way both systems are really good. Yea the panasonic 100-300 is a great 600 to 1200mm lens for wildlife and hiking. Let me know your results of the new 100--400 if you get it.
@@brucegraner5901 Yea. I seen a link on the Canadian amazon site. Looks legit. I will be waking up tomorrow morning for links and high and low for a pre-order if they allow it.
Ooh, I hope it's what you predict! It would be great! The reach and the weather sealing, yes!! I still use an em5 (the first one) as my everyday camera, because it's small and the weather sealing makes it nice. At some point, I'd love the om5 and this new predicted lens! :)
I think the exciting thing here is the addition of sync IS , the 100 -400 doesn’t have it and is also limited to 25fps, hopefully we will get 50fps , I agree with you regarding the digital zoom it is amazingly good,
Darn, now I'm confused with choices. I have a P950 largely thanks to your videos and it's been great. But, the bug has caught me and I hunger for more. I was contemplating the 100-400 with maybe a used OM-1 (G9II as well?), but then I started obsessing over the 300/F4. That lens seems super sharp and doesn't degrade much with the 1.4x or even the 2x TC. Now there is this 150-600. I guess we'll see about image quality. In terms of overall system weight, I think 6 pounds is the hard limit. I do prefer walking and handheld shooting for sure. But within that weight, it seems that FF and APS-C options would be interesting as well. The Canon 200-800 is the same weight as the sigma 150-600 sport for example, and with the R5 would be pretty good seems like?
Yea, one thing to consider is the LOAD OUT. Meaning how much does the system costs / weigh for a particular shooting discipline you are doing. Example Hiking om5 with a 100-300 or 100-400 is about the lightest you can get. The 150-600 would be more deliberate photography like in a blind or knowing you will see animal and it is indeed worth the effort. So do you have options to change with the different types of photography. The p950 does it all but at a costs of speed and bokeh backround blurr. Hope this helps and thanks again for watching.
@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE Thank you for the advice! Now that I look at my P950 pictures (mostly small birds), the focal length are at least 600mm, but usually 800+. I definitely want to stick to the adage "the best camera is the one you have with you" and not get something too bulky or heavy that I have to think twice grabbing on the way out. That 300 F4 might be the thing. I should probably set the memorized FL on the P950 to 600, 800, and 1200mm and get a sense of what it feels like shooting a prime.
I am excited about this lens. I currently use the 300mm F4 95% of the time with my OM-1. I really want the 150-400 Pro but I really don’t want to spend the money on that one. But I do prefer a zoom. The longer the better. I shot a Sigma 150-600 for a year or so with a Canon R6 and had no complaints with the lens. Is the larger aperture and built in TC worth nearly $5000 more?
Yep exactly. Just got done pre-ordering mine. We will see but I cant see paying another 5000 more for a simple solution of using a 150-600 that EVERYBODY else has. This is a real head scratcher from OLYMPUS why it too so long....
Oh dear...please, any company but Sigma. They built all their lenses as heavy as a brick. I chose Olympus specifically because of it relatively light weight.
It is is the 150-600 C version it is the lightest 600mm out on the market. My feelings is it will be the sports edition because of the faster focus and weather sealing. But lets be honest any 600mm F6.3 is kind of heavy so even the sport edition is the same weight as the Sony or nikon versions. Ill take it either way OM needs some type of hype lol. Thanks again for watching.
@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE the Sigma 150-600 DG DN Sports is much lighter than the predecessor and the Olympus 150-600 is based on that based on the all avaialble info right now. Also the new Art lenses are way less heavy then the DSLR versions.
I agree with your thoughts, but I doubt OM System has sold "Hundreds of Thousands" of anything, including the OM-1. I bet more EM1-MIII bodies were sold by Olympus. OM System has done great with marketing, but the 150-600mm lens went from Rumor to reality in a few days when already announced for quite some time lenses on the roadmap still have yet to appear. I'm more scared for the future of OM System with a new simply rebadged Sigma lens. It's like releasing the OM-5 with a micro USB, little to no effort or investment in the product (like the OM-1 MII will prove to be).
Yes, my thoughts are OM is trying to get the most out of the tech they can without spending a ton of money on things that do not pan out. My guess is that they are going to try to MARKET the heck out of what they have with smaller upgrades to these camera systems. My other guess is they will cut costs as much as possible on the existing items to get out of the RED. I am not sure if OM is able to become profitable or not? If they were smart they would get as many wildlife youtubers on board showing their gear as much as possible doing weekly wildlife videos thus inspiring all new photographers to their brand. They have a tough tough battle ahead. The m43 debacle has been going on for years and look just this year 2024 we might be getting a much needed 600mm lens, when back in 2007 I had a 500mm lens and then it was discontinued by sigma once the mount changed to micro 4/3. LOL we will see
@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE when you can get a 45 mp full frame body and the exact same lens (150-600mm Sigma) for less, OM System needs a reality check. I don't see how they ask the price of the apsc version + an apsc body and still sell the thing. But other than the price, I'm all for a 600mm mft lens that costs less than $7000.
I get it. My view is they need money in a bad way. They can make it up with a big markup in price. The camera prices and all the bells and whistles makes up for the overprice on the lenses. At 7K for the 150-400 id go all day long at 2500 for a longer lens that is sharp. Again all the built in stuff on the m43 camera still makes them a better buy overall. But One could feel a bit over charged by the 2500 price tag for sure.
Yes, Olympus is up against the wall on this one. They are very late to the party for long lenses and now that OM is in charge they might not be so stubborn to changing their ways. We will see at this point I do not think they should overlook any efficient option of growing their market share.
20MP on the zoomed target (M43 area) with a fast-readout no blackout sensor, and effective 1200mm. Even the 45MP r5 can't boast that readout, that number of pixels in the 2x crop area (thus cannot effectively emulate the same resolution at the same FOV by cropping), and it costs 3k, not 850. I mean, it is a bit silly to act like there is 'no benefit'. Certainly many many many benefits over **any** 850 buck camera. The FF of course has benefits over the M43 camera as well, including low light ability and others.
@@danielosborne8228 Well, anything M43 can do at 20MP, the 45MP FF can do too in crop more with all of the great readouts. If it's the same size as the M43 camera, what's the point? M43 needs to be small; that's it. Putting a FF lens on a M43 camera is just lazy and lacks innovation; or, in the case of OMDS, investment. I guess having it is better than not having it (if it was cheap to develop), allowing them to make a real lens.
