I think everyone should do a methodical test like you do before letting it rip. To test all of the features and functions not only to get comfortable with the quad, but also to identify any defects. I'm also glad to hear that DJI has good customer support. It's getting hard to resist buying one of their quads.

Well, a long time coming, and glad you explained the delay. The VPS (vision positioning sensors) on my P3A gave me a fake alarm when I was on my 3rd flight. Contacted DJI, and they emailed me a FedEx shipping ticket. From the time I sent it to the time I got it back, with replaced VPS at no charge, was 13 days. The over exposure bars on your screen can be TURNED OFF in your camera settings. The poor performance of the video on your tablet is likely due to 2 things. #1, probably not a very powerful/fast CPU in your tablet. I have absolutely NO video problems as displayed on whatever you are using, and I use a NVidia Shield K1, which is a very powerful 8" tablet. #2, when you run a screen capture program at the same time as the DJI GO app, especially with an underpowered tablet, you will likely get video aberrations on the screen. Turn off your screen capture and any/all other apps which are running and try it again. I would not trust obstacle avoidance by running it at a chain link fence, which is 90% air. It detects solid objects well, but non-solid objects are a crap shoot. It works well enough to avoid buildings when you hit RTH or during a mission. When I go out on a shoot, I pre-cache my maps before leaving home, so that when I arrive on site, the maps are there to use. Not sure why you were limited to 13mph in GPS mode. My P3A, in full GPS mode, will do 35mph easy .. and I had it up to 51mph with a tailwind coming back to me while flying over Lake Erie. There is a learning curve to be able to use all the DJI GO features, and an even larger learning curve to use the many features in Litchi. For the sake of a fair review, these features should be learned before reviewing them. Hope you will do that in future reviews. I also plan to get the new Mavic, but probably not until next year, since Winter is rapidly approaching in my neck of the woods. Mahalo ...
+markybyeah interestingly I didn't have this much FPV garble in my P3, Bebop 2 or (out tomorrow) my DISCO flight tests all using the exact same setup. But yes, it very well could be an under power issue with this budget Samsung Galaxy Tab A I use. Or maybe a bad wifi config the P4 chose on boot up for the second flight. Regardless, I think I showed what to expect with this config.
Don't know about iPad 4, but Galaxy Tab A has 1.3ghz processor. Nvidia Shield K1 has 2.2 ghz processor. Internal storage: Tab 8gb - Shield 16gb. Screen resolution: Tab 720P - Nvidia 1080P. Galaxy Tab doesn't have enough processor, especially if you are running more than 1 app at the same time. It is not on the DJI recommended mobile device list.

Just a small tip. With the current version of google maps you can also download parts of the map. It should be possible for the DJI App to use this, I think.
Ron Brown GPS only provides you with the coordinates and the resulting informations like speed, altitude etc. If you want to see a map on your device, you somehow need to have the data stored on your device (included in the app, download via WiFI, "live" via mobile data).
GermanCube I mostly fly using a iPad mini 2 cellular model, but even if I turned off the data, I always have my iPhone in my pocket so my iPad could use it's data.
Hi Dustin, I know this was some time ago. but when you had the vision sensor errors, did it fly away. mine did, it was like something was infront of it and backed off at great speed. returned under warranty (defective from first flight)
It is a bit sometimes as seen in the review. May be better with a more powerful tablet but it is normal for it to be choppy at time with wireless wifi video.
at 25mins in those purple interference lines are caused by using a crappy cable between the remote and tablet. get a good cable and you'll never see that again...
I am indecisive about this one the, Phantom 4 Pro, and the Mavic Air. Immediate use will be to capture Ariel shots for local news station. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dustin, Quick question - do you need to discharge the remote battery on the Phantom 4 before storing since it is a LiPo? Or, is it fine to keep the remote fully charged?

wow dustin what a story...the 4 following the 5 miles fence is actually pretty cool but not helpful for us phantom owners...how far were you away from home before rth....I just dont buy the wind held if back and killed the battery...
about 2 miles away. I'm honestly not sure what really caused it but I was 300ft up and it was pretty windy that night. Just weird how it wouldn't pass the 5mile airport zone line to come back against the wind once it went in going with the wind. I have this strange feeling that it did not register the zone until it was too late and once over there was a glitch once registered that it was near the zone line. I got no zone warning that time where I usually do and have to accept to fly through.
Are you flying your rebuilt 4 that far now...I live in the Ohare airport area but I got lucky to be in a fly zone...at least my Phantom thinks its ok to fly...of course I keep it at 400 feet which is no where near airport traffic..I have not had a fly away but sometimes it doesnt want to come back for a couple of minutes and then says ok I will come home now....I am having a blast with it...please get your hands on a Aton....I need your blessing on this monster..I have two already and is my favorite

Thanks Dustin, great review. That FPV glitching is horrible. I hope you get it fixed. What's your take on DJI support? I have heard, even from DJI fanboys that support is really bad. That and the fact that you have to use a phone/tablet with it have always put me off DJI.
I've had the Phantom 4 since June and have never seen the FPV glitching that Dustin experienced in the video. HIs Phantom may still have issues beyond what has already been repaired.
Dustin Dunnill I mostly fly with the iPad mini 2 cellular edition with GPS built in, and sometimes my iPhone. No issues with either one receiving a clear FVP signal. And even when I get to far away and start to loose signal it doesn't look like what you were experiencing.

no such issues on the Pro/plus. After seven years on would expect they got it sorted. I class my Pro+ as a medium drone capable of both comerical and playful aspects like fishing. Anyone who spends more than 2k on a drone outside commercial enterprises is crazy.
Flying 300ft over people who have no idea that thing is above them? Seems like a great idea. You already had an issues once with this unit. What happens if you lost a motor or esc from that height? I'm sure it just glides to the ground light as a feather right?
It detected you at 13:50, you can see it on the screeen. But i dont know why it didnt stop... :D Maybe it wanted to like go around you, i gouess it can to that too...
Dustin Dunnill Well yeah, its possible. But I´ve seen the phantom 4 going around obstacle while using some follow mode or whatever. Maybe it was trying to do so cause it should be able to see that you werent a wide obstacle... :)

When I mapped the flight data it was following the curvature of the 5mile zone line almost perfectly and would not cross it coming back. DJI said it was wind.
Baptiste DL that's a problem with his P4, I've not experienced this problem with mine and I've owned it for around a month now, flying to distances of just over 2 KM and 300 metres altitude.

markybyeah Of course I do, see my channel. I've actually had two P4s, lost the first one due to a silly mistake I made back in August, got a new one just recently. It's hard to tell with what's causing that problem from just watching this video. I've seen a display issue like that be caused by a defect antenna in the drone itself in another vid.

No sound is recorded from drone. Yes urban interference is likely your issue ✌️

What I do for cellular data to have the map ready is I connect the I pad mini to my I phone hotspot ,
Just a small tip. With the current version of google maps you can also download parts of the map. It should be possible for the DJI App to use this, I think.
If you have a tablet with built in GPS you don't need to have the data turned on to receive all the map information.

Good question. I did get a replacement under warranty due to sensor malfunction.
Is the live video feed choppy? It looks choppy on the video.
It is a bit sometimes as seen in the review. May be better with a more powerful tablet but it is normal for it to be choppy at time with wireless wifi video.
Do the pink lines and zebra lines show up when you look at the footage at a later time?
