I'm from Brazil, so I can tell you this: Be aware of flirting with girls in communities like this (even when you're purely being friendly), especially inside the favelas. You never know if they're engaged or dating someone important or even if they have a relative who wouldn't appreciate seeing them with a stranger at a bar while they're working. You don't want to get into trouble simply for asking to kiss them on the cheek. There are real stories and their end is not funny. I'm not saying it's 100% of the cases but I wish I could say something different than this, but it's just a warning.

as a brazilian this guy has no idea in how much danger he was in. Its all a good time and laughs until he does one thing that offends them and its over for him. It could be something as silly as bumping into a member holding a drink in his hand. But This shows a real peaceful side and a almost heart warming side of the favelas. Its easy to forget normal citizens are put into truck tires and tied to them as they set them on fire.
But he was with the leader no? Wouldn't he have intervened if anything bad happened?
@spaceballs4203 not always, the leader only decides the direction of the gang. And he does hold a lot of power within the gang but you have to remember that the favelas do not care who does and doesn’t die. This is my own personal understanding of it but idk.
This is so true. They have zero respect for life. That's the problem, a life has little to no value. They shoot people over nothing, happened twice here in my village in 3 years time. Ending a life here is the equivalent of beating up someone in Europe. They kill you as easy as that you get beaten up in Europe, life means nothing to them. So be careful! And stay out and away!

I'm a Brazilian and I feel ashamed by my country situation right now. There's this weird glamour around favelas and this is not a good thing in my point of view, really. Those communities are a huge sign that our state failed miserably on ensuring a safe environment for people, specially in such important city like Rio.

É a favela, não tem jeito
Verdade, as crianças que ficam ouvindo funk, vendo os traficante andando com arma do lado delas, vendo que a sociedade valoriza os traficante com AK-47 na mão. Vê toda a sociedade, emissoras, mídias, falando mal de polícia. Cartilhas ideológicas, obviamente elas vão a maioria para esse lado "obscuro". Obscuro só de palavra externa, porque, implicitamente, o que se demonstra é que esse é o lado "legal".
O traficante geralmente é o "fodão" para as crianças. Através de música, apologia, idolatrias. As crianças já nascem nesse ambiente horrível, ainda mais com essa ideologia, óbvio que elas vão acabar virando traficante.
A esquerda, o funk, rap, vídeos como esse, emissoras, mídia, só faz é criar potenciais traficantes.
Todo o ambiente externo das crianças é propício para elas se tornarem bandidos, traficantes. As únicas que conseguem ainda segurar a favela como um alicerce são as mães fodas, trabalhadoras, que não se vitimizam e ensinam seus filhos o certo. Bate neles. Agora, e os que não tem mãe? Pai? E os que mesmo tendo, a mãe o pai não consegue educá-los. A rua, mídia, TV, escolas, educa. Educa como? Ensinando que o traficante é o foda e a polícia é o lixo. Ensinando que rico é ruim e pobre é bom. Ensinando que roubar é tudo OK e trabalhador é otário, porque vem de família pobre e poderia estar roubando.

I'm also brazillian, and have been in Rio sometimes on vacations but only spent my time on the beaches and "common" places. I've gotta say, this dude has real guts, to go to the hills of the favelas with cameras and stuff to record and show everyone what's the reality of these places you need balls of steel.
