Also when working in extreme cold conditions, after taking the tripod out of a warm vehicle and after you level the instrument, put snow at the base of each leg. This will prevent the instrument from settling due to the temperature change between the feet and the soil. Warm metal will thaw cold soil due to the difference of temp between the feet and soil.

Luke, he used the leveling screws correctly. He is saying not to turn the leveling screws the same way at the same time. Like if your going clockwise on one screw, do not go clockwise on the other one. You would go clockwise on one and counter clockwise on the other. Watch his hands when he levels it up you'll see that on one screw he was going clockwise and other one he was going counter clockwise.
I used instruments in late fall in central Minnesota, the warm legs from the warm truck would actually sink into the somewhat frozen ground. We would then put snow around the bottom of the legs to counteract thawing. m
as someone who only started enrolling in sem 1 i find this very helpful. no wonder the calculation had so many errors to the point the result became invalid. i hope there won't be any issues anymore 😅

This is an "automatic" level - meaning it contains an additional internal leveling mechanism that makes use of gravity for fine adjustment. I don't think the video mentions that. But when buying a level, it's important to get an automatic one for the best accuracy. So here we actually see 4 leveling mechanisms at work: the tripod legs, the dome adjustment at the top of the tripod, the three legs at the bottom of the level, and finally the internal gravity-based automatic adjuster.
You mean it's collaborated to the horizontal 'level' axis. Nothing to do with the word 'gravity'. Why have you had the urge to add this fictisious assumption??
optical level & staff were kept in museums 30 years ago. Jewish state using digital equipments which is a one man operation; saved the cost of one man.
Just curious how you would do elevation over long distances, like a mile, since a laser or sight level would not account for the curvature of earth, but a water level would, assuming no geomagnetic or gravimetric anomalies close by...
@@henra2244 so how did they do it before GPS? Like 25 years ago is not that long ago. Laser level and accept the inaccuracy due to earth's curvature? Toronto's runways are 2 miles long!
Hello friend, I work as a surveyor in Belarus. Tell a friend which sites in the USA I should apply for to find a job as a surveyor, I worked only in geodetic support for construction along this profile, building houses, schools, kindergartens. Will they take me if I have a Belarusian diploma or do I need to retrain in the USA and where to go to retrain in the USA?
Can any body help me? Why can I measure the elevation at sea level and I can measure the elevation of the mountain top and every foot in between but I can not measure the 8" per mile squared according to the pythagorean theorum of geometry and spheres for earth to be a spinning ball with a circumference of 24,901 miles?
If you set your level on shore take a reading and shoot a mile out onto a lake...your reading out on the lake will be off by the drop from the circumference of the planet
+Poeticriffraff It is just how we do it...has shown to be more accurate over time and since you keep it set up while you shoot all your ties you don't have to fidget with it; it stays firmly in place. Then you pull it out and go to the second back site when you are done with your first ties.
Adam Smith ahhh that makes sense. The flat tops have nothing but the bolt keeping it in place where the dome top has a coupling so to speak. Thanks man
What if the other end was in a hole, or dip? When you read if the space between the two points is level, reads that it is in fact level, but because the other end was in a dip, or hole, etc. etc. These things aren't accurate. Your not measuring anything. Your only measuring the two points.
Mark II Wrong. You read the level of a control point first. From the elevation of that known point you can then measure the other points you need to and calculate the elevations and grades.
Not bad. These types instruments have "floating" crosshairs which is the automatic reference. The "level bubble" you see here is really a "rough" level. Older traditional transit levels did not "float" the crosshairs and must be leveled exactly using the included precision bubble.
learning this in covid era is so hard because you dont have face to face class...thank you for the video

How do rivers work on a globe?
They flow downhill in all directions. That only makes sense on the geocentric model.
Do some levels have an Earth curvature calculator?

The video is called "Introduction to Leveling" so your comment is redundant.

You will see on that big ruler, how exactly deep that hole is. And don't forget to ask yourself what you are actually measuring.
