- New York City has officially become the first city in the country to implement a congestion charge for any vehicle entering the middle of Manhattan. The tax has been in effect for decades in other parts of the world and officials say it has provided benefits from easing traffic to curbing pollution. NBC’s Emilie Ikeda reports in this week’s Sunday Focus.

Reduce congestion ?! BS ! It's all about keeping the lousy lazy MTA afloat - where are the ANTI-MONOPOLY laws?
Tax the poor and middle, to help fund "good sounding policy" but don't touch the wealthy in the city.
Its unconstitutional. Its violating my freedom of travel.
I must've missed that 'right'.
The Founding Fathers missed it too, since it isn't a Constitutional Right.
I wonder if my family can sue Governor Hoke and NEW YORK STATE after I get murdered on the subway that I was forced to take because I can’t afford to drive my car to work
Every year it seems the MTA needs money. Where is all this money going? We the people will never know that piece of information
Why are people afraid to call this what it is? This is Social Engineering. The gov't pushing people to behave in ways they normally would not, for whatever reason, and by whatever means, is called Social Engineering. Ways to engineer behavior by gov't are typically to make "the old ways" more expensive, more dangerous, more inconvenient, etc. Rarely do we see behavior modification by making the new way better. The best way to sell people on taking slow, dirty and dangerous MTA mass transit is by making it fast, clean and safe. That's a near- impossible task in the open air landfill/mental institution called The Big Apple. So we have this instead, a tax on road users intended to force people onto the MTA; the lessened congestion (if any) and bigger budget for MTA slush funds is a happy by-product. Get ready, this is coming to your city next, if your city is run by Democrats.
What a hoax, guaranteed no improvement to the public transportation system will be made.
80% of the revenue generated will go to capital improvements on NYC Subways and Buses, 10% to Metro-North Railroad and 10% percent to the Long Island Rail Road. There will be mandated reports so you can check for yourself :)
@@MilanTobdzicthe GWB tolls were to expire once the loans were paid off (you can check for yourself). Once a new cash cow starts, the government will figure out a way to exploit it.
Government made the car dependent roads. Government can likewise reverse course as they are doing now
Still gonna be 50million for an elevator @@MilanTobdzic
@@MilanTobdzic 🤣😂were u born yesterday?
whats the point if all the money is being mismanaged and wasted anyway?
New York has problems but it’s the greatest city in the world.
@@danielbrockerttravel
Not anymore.
Exactly I would like to see a local news channel do a weekly or monthly segment on where money is going. See if they are honest! You know it won’t happen because 1-2 years from now they will be raising this price saying it wasn’t enough while nothing changes.
Same volume of traffic on the road - as working people need to get where they need to get. While the lousy MTA has set another tax (non-payroll tax, there is already a MTA payroll tax) - to pad their pension accounts. Shame - rip off of New Yorkers! Don't we have ANTI-MONOPOLY laws on the books ?!
Inflation is raging
New york : let's make it more expensive for the people
If you can't afford $9, maybe you should take the subway or the bus...
@@MilanTobdzic it’s $9 now… $12 in 2028 and $15 in 2031.
$9 * 5 days/week = $45 … $180 a month .
Car dependency in itself is expensive
@@MilanTobdzic
You sound like one of those bike riders that think the city belongs to them.
They need to fire Kathy (do nothing ) Hochul !!!!!
A sad day for New Yorkers.
London still has congestion. It only keeps out the people who can’t afford to pay.
Congestion went down 15%. And public transit ridership went way up.
@ In 2003 the congestion charging zone started in the city of London. Traffic went down 16% and the air was cleaner. Twenty years later the congestion is back. $18 is pocket change to a millionaire.
Then ban all cars from the city center and make the city not a terrible place to be in
It is a cash grab as we all know this money will not better the system. They will come back in a year to increase the price and to say it wasn’t enough.
we have this in London, good luck!
Whats the experience?
@@YaddyvalerioTraffic congestion fell 15% and transit ridership went up 30%.
@@danielbrockerttraveland everyone is happy?
No one is happy for illegal taxation .
@@Yaddyvalerio less cars even though sometimes it seems the same and more people using public transport
Traffic is still bad here in London 😂😂
It’s unpopular for New Yorkers as well.
Shouldn't it be a sliding scale based on your income? What's $9 to a millionaire?
I see all these comments and people mad but they not gonna vote any different so guess what? It’s staying. And the speed limit is going down to 20mph too.
There are many places in Britain where the speed limit is 20, even on some main seeming streets in London.
🤣
They also don't live in NYC. Those of us that live here, support it. It's what we voted for.
@@zed316 that’s why NYC is the crap city it is now, because of your ignorant votes.
You’re right. As much as the governor sucks in New York. They’re still going to vote for her because New Yorkers have got to vote Democrat. No matter how bad the candidate is no matter how horrible or corrupt they will still vote Democrat. New Yorkers are their own worst enemy.
Put millions of dollars into the pockets of the commuters? who wrote her speech?
She’s a liar !
She means the multi million/billionaire commuters who want to drive
I can say in the UK all the congestion charge has done is made the poor poorer. Also if NYC wants to raise some revenue maybe stop people jumping the barriers at subway stations 😂
But wouldn’t that make poor people poorer.😂
@danielbrockerttravel Fair point 😅 but they're two separate issues. Congestion charge is a lot higher than a subway fare and congestion charge isn't necessary, whereas you need to charge money for using public transportation (or tax very highly). I'm also not advocating for people to not pay the congestion charge once its there, I just don't think it should be there. In the same way, I don't think people should be allowed to jump a barrier and not pay for subway travel.
This is insane.
Why do they only interview disgruntled motorists and not the millions of happy New York residents who spent years advocating and voted for this change? It's kind of dishonest. The whole point is to make it less easy for drivers! So those who have no business driving downtown don't clog the road for others.
There's people driving downtown in all that traffic just to do it?
@@Dieselpower440 Sure are. You'll see many more people Park and Ride outside of Lower Manhattan when the fee is introduced. It may sound crazy, but some people are just too stubborn to switch modes without a good incentive.
They aren't "forced" to pay. They can just not drive like the rest of us.
Yeah but for people in queens, brooklyn and LI only way out now is to pay a toll, fee, etc. Go through Bronx pay a toll, go through Staten Island pay a toll, go through Manhattan now pay a fee. All ways now have to pay something that will obviously keep going up!
Legal corruption.
This does not reduce the congestion - I'm on the road every morning - big BS and propaganda
I guess it’s a great way to force people to do what the government wants, either do as you are told or suffer.
Vote Hochul and these democrats like Nadler out of office. Audit the MTA.
Why car owners have to fund MTA? The next idea , lets tax private apartment renters to Fund NYCHA
Why car owners get to pollute the city air that city residents without cars have to breathe?
@AtulKedia really do you think it is about pollution 🤣? Tell me what health problems are between 60 streets and downtown ? Why don't they put congestion prices on the really pollution health problems zone : The South Bronx has the highest rates of asthma in the United States.
@@AtulKedia bro you can't be serious, this kind of thinking is why you guys lost the election
@@phurion. What election?
Nice, it's done in England and many other countries.
I hope trump terminates the bill
5 BILLIONS FOR ILLEGALS BUT NEW YORKERS THAT DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE AND DON'T USE THE NASTY TRAINS AND BUSES ARE PUNISHED AND MADE TO PAY FOR THE MTA.
If the trains and busses are so "nasty" perhaps you would be happy to see this source of new funding for them!
MTA maintenance was factored into the budget. Until it wasn't....
As a nation, we need to realize that there are other ways to achieve things. Always driving a car isn't one of them.
This country was founded on the notion that personal vehicles are essential for transportation. To reverse this idea, we must either increase the cost of car ownership and operation or develop more efficient means of public transportation.
If they want people to stop driving they must improve the public transportation system first. We are far behind all other "first world" countries.
@@Myraisins1 While our public transit lacks, it works. I use it whenever I travel. Stop making excuses.
Just because you use it doesn’t make it better. People are getting killed, assaulted, etc daily . Getting set on fire. What sense does it make to try and get everyone to use the train? They are crowded as is, how does this help
@@cedscorpio5657The same happens everyday to people in car accidents. Public transit is and has always been safer than driving
Move out.
Wow NYC copying London with charging. not really a good thing as it increase load on public transport and increases traffic to smaller roads and other areas. Also in london business need to change their vans otherwise pay the charge and any environment feee
Bet this law is enforced
If I drove in NY I would honk 2x as much after this just to prove them wrong about the noise levels.
Don't worry guys, the revenue generated from this tax will go to make 'public transformation improvements' 😅🙄🤡
Sounds great to me! Better quality of life, and most importantly - better transit! A win for the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers who dont drive into the city.
Sounds like a money grab to me. Public transportation will not get any better, businesses will suffer, and the lower and middle class will be further priced out.
@ low income commuters qualify for a 50% discount - and the middle class overwhelmingly takes public transportation into the CBD (86% according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics).
They have been promising a better transit for 30 years and you believe them now? And why? MTA isn't even transparent and not a government agency.
@@SSemi1UOEyou’re right, we should do nothing
No. It's another burden on citizens. That means increase in all businesses shipping to the city. That will be paid by business owners who will then increase prices to consumers. So this is another tax on you the consumer. And you will never see that money going to MTA or whatever they say it's for. It's another waste and squandering of money. Just horrible.
How will they implement this will there be a toll booth in the city?
They have these overhesd radar detectors, that have been installed at different areas of the city for months now. One example if you want to see how it looks, is at 60th and West End Ave.
Toll booths haven’t been used for years, where have you been?
cameras that check your details by your registration number. if your reg isn't in their system as paying the charge that day then you gotta pay up
Cameras bro

Expand highway, more ev
New Jersey should raise their George
Washington and lincoln tunnel tolls to a $100 to
prevent people from going to New York City.
To teach them a good lesson or if they want
to do congestion, pricing . It should depend
on how much. A person makes a week so if
that person makes 10000 be charged a 1000.
Each day of his congestion pricing toll. The same way should go for tickets
Necessary
Congestion pricing assumes 2 things
1. Every driver has the ability to pay
2. There is reliable alternative to driving that get you where your job needs you to be on time
For many, either one or both are not true. That makes congestion pricing is a wealth privilege. The ones who can afford can breeze anywhere. Those who can't afford continue to pay for maintenance of roads they can't drive on
1. Take the train, which is a lot cheaper. 2. Everywhere below 60th street has great access to a train that you can take.
@vandreadparty Cool good to know
In NY we gate conhestion pricing its a scam!.
Coming to a city near you.
Stunning and brave
Trump is our only hope
Lot Lawsuit against Governor Kathy Hochul or MTA and congestion pricing. Donald Trump hate congestion pricing in new york city. I hate Kathy Hochul about congestion pricing. Kathy Hochul is Fallon. Lot of people need money to pay for all fuel costs in new york city. Remember Free means Free in new york city. I'm from Illinois think about Downtown Chicago everyone drive for free everyday is best. Think about a wisconsin they have no tollway on the highway everyone drive for free everyday.
Democrats….
Well, it's done in England and also some Asian countries like I believe Singapore.
With a great and tried idea to reduce traffic, improve air quality, and fund public transportation!
@MilanTobdzic bro we get it you are a hardcore leftist that hates trump, it's all over your comments, keep going the more nonsense you spew the more people are gonna turn right
@@phurion. Ah yes, so "hardcore!" You are the one spewing ignorant nonsense. I will not turn right because of someone saying truth. It will not deter me from being a leftist, also, that doesn't make somebody a leftist and there is nothing wrong with being one.
