Well said , UA ! When I was in England in 2017 ( summer ) , I loved the food. I used to go to The Cock Tavern in Ongar on a regular basis , and the ales were great , the food was tasty , the customers were friendly ( including their dogs ) and the lady who owned the pub was lovely , someone to listen to me and cheer me up when I was down . I wish I could go back again ! Happy new year , UA !
We have a great British fish and chip chop in Houston (actually Katy, Texas, a western suburb of Houston): "The Chipper." Top-notch haddock, cod, and excellent chips. Well worth checking out if you are ever in town and needing a F&C "fix."
As a Brit living in England, this would defo be my place to go across the pond… Thanks for the review! Have to sort of agree with the premiere though, as the algorithm shoved it down my timeline so had to search/scroll for it which could be missed by other viewers
I lived in London 30 years and NYC for 15 years. A Salt & Battery is good fish and chips. It is no way as good as UK fish and chips, definitely much better than all other fish and chip joints in the 5 boroughs.
thanks UA you and here be barr were the two youtubers i used on my first ever trip to nyc.her be barrs tips on eaay travel and your tips on places to eat. yall are awasome.
A good qulity battered fish and chips thick cut are really nice . England has its good with the bad take out like anywhere else does . Im Australian, we like ours with lemon on the side tartare sauce. And a side salad . Chicken salt .oh yeah ❤
I see them drinking Irn-Bru in the Window great Scottish Soft Drink me from Scotland i can confirm this is the best fish and chips ive seen outside my home in Scotland
I love that they have curry sauce on the menu. We tried this at a chippy in Ireland last year and it changed everything. It’s similar to Japanese curry gravy. Salt and Vinny on the fish and dipping the fries in curry sauce…you’ll never go back!
Absolutely. I’m Irish, I love a large tub of curry with fish and chips 😃 it has to be good curry though. Lots of places sell curry and it’s glorified gravy. 🤣
Nice review UA! I lived in Leicester for about a year and I got to really enjoy all the offerings. I love my meat pies, and mushy peas. So, working for years in the West Village, I know how good A Salt & Battery is... They have been there for years! Grab that malt vinegar, and let me know when you're ready to do that UK review!
Ate at the Chip Shop in Brooklyn awhile back. Super good had deep fried pizza and twinkies. Was on a German food show. They were filming and they asked us to be on the show.
That's such a great spot! I've been there a few times. I wouldn't say it's the best fish and chips in NYC, but the food is great nonetheless and the price is right!
Looks authentic and a top tip is to add a bit of malt vinegar to the mushy peas and stir it in, which gives it a nice acidic flavour to go with the texture of the mushy peas and it's always a winner in my book.
Give it a try, and take along an extra shopping bag for pork pies and sausage rolls etc. Meyers of Keswick is right there with freshly made Cornish pasties and baked goods and all sorts of imports. Well worth the trip.
I really enjoy going to A Salt and Battery every time I send time in NYC. My only issue is I don't love their tartar sauce, so I go and buy my own and bring it to the resturant. Great Cod in my opinion (just order the Cod) and I really enjoy the batter. The chips are also excellent. I really think that the portions are a good size for the money. Your reviews are always excellent UA. Thank you.
Looks good, over here in the UK alot of fish and chip shop owners batter recipes are a closely guarded secret but i did find out that alot use fizzy water to make the batter extra crispy, also beer is used in some places, and if you are ever here again ask for a deepfried snickers bar..😊
This is what fish and chips is like in Toronto at the good spots. Exactly! Close to tempura. Kinda similar to Popeyes batter, if that makes sense. We have ketchup chips here for a similar reason! Love this video. Thanks, UA.
I am so glad to have watched this, just did a quick stop in London and first thing i ate was some haddock fish and chips. It was very tasty, but need some mushy peas. Have to try this in February! Great passion about the food vision hopefully you do get to travel the world to show us some good eats! :D
In Australia lemon is more common over vinegar. Side note: This is a finger food, get ya hands in there and pick the whole peice up and eat it like a taco and just start taking bites out of it. As an aussie I know a thing or too about fish & chips, they never come with a knife and fork. Just hack into it mate. 😂
I’m in New Zealand and we have a chippie shop in every neighbourhood too, now I’m inspired to get some for tea tonight 😊 no fish for us tho, we like potato flips, corn patties and vege rolls om nom nom
Hey UA, if you are in the Philly area again, I highly recommend this bar called McMenamins. They have huge portions, and are famous for their fish and chips. They use catfish for their fish, and it’s crunchy and fluffy on the inside.
So glad that you compared Gordon’s newish fish and chip chain. I’ve been eating at A Salt and Battery (and tea and sympathy/shopping at Meyers of Keswick) for decades. I’m a Brit and grew up on fish and chips at home every Friday night. I don’t get downtown that often anymore, but you’ve tempted me that I’m due a trip . P.s. Most Americans aren’t aware of the flavor difference in flavor of malt vinegar.
I agree I’m from Uk and lived in Canada for 10 years and went to many fish n chips restaurants and they could Never replicate it . Not sure if it’s oil or fryers but just not the same
Well said, sir. You got really preachy towards the end. Thank you for shedding light on the healing power of food. I love fish and chips in general, be it British fish and chips or Cajun fried catfish with seasoned fries and buttermilk biscuits.
Fish deep fried in batter is actually steamed. The fish without the batter is extremely healthy. Originally the batter was not consumed, saying that if you don't eat the batter you are missing out big time. I love fish and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce, up north they like gravy on their chips.
4:13 Look at the pics on the wall. Almost every one of them is hanging crooked. This reminds me of a famous Perscheid one-panel comic: An ocean liner is (very dramatically) sinking. Edit: Of course, Perscheid's most infamous comics are his three "Frauenparkplaetze" panels.
I don’t mind shellfish , but I’m not usually a fan of fish. However I do love chip shop style fish and chips when it’s done the authentic British chippy way. It’s not fishy tasting as long as you get the cod. it’s just beautifully soft and flaky fish with crispy batter. The batter being equally as important as the fish. Because of the batter and the paper wrapping it stays the perfect temperature even after a longer walk back from the take away. If you go to a chip shop the portion size is huge and the chips along with the ones you can find in Belgium are the best I’ve found anywhere in the world.
I was just in London the past few weeks. Golden Union is my number one place in Soho London. Been going there for yrs. What you just had looked identical. The price you paid about the same as London except dollars vs pounds. So London higher priced 1.26 to 1.00 USD currently. You forgot to use the tartar sauce. In London they gave me a huge pile of chips. I could not eat them. No ketchup, so if you want that for the fries you have to haev your own. And I did take my food to go! I have tried Gordon Ramsay in Vegas for the fast food fish. Very good. Small portion but excellent. Much thinner batter. My recent trip I forgot to eat mushy peas. I like them. My wife calls them baby food as it looks like baby food peas from a jar. Love the videos. You do a really through down to earth job. Love the matzah ball soup reviews. It should be clear, not salty and have some carrots and celery at least for flavor. The balls should be soft and not rock hard either. If the liquid looks very bright yellow, its usually not good.
I need to try this place. Looks great. I agree with you on the mushy peas, a great side and when done the right way it can be better than the main dish. My only issue is you wearing Eagles garb in NYC. Wear that for your cheesesteak reviews in Philly lol. Go Giants!
Now I’m craving fish ‘n chips. UA, good job! On your next trip to Los Angeles put Ye Olde King’s Head, in Santa Monica, on your list. I first went there in the 80’s and it survived lockdown and is still going. Santa Monica has numerous UK shops so this place with a traditional menu fits right in. I haven’t been in a while for it’s inconvenient to me but still there and going strong. In a touristy area but legit food. Joe
i lived in the UK as well for a year (and went back and forth for long periods of time for an additional two years). I think chip shop fish and chips are what I miss the most about being there. And yeah, English food is definitely not bad and I don't really know where that rumor came from. I mostly hear that claim from people who have never been and just repeat jokes they've heard on sitcoms. Granted, not everything is great there, like jellied eels, but every place has something that a lot of people aren't fond of. If you go to England, you definitely don't have to worry about food quality.
Eat at their homes. Many of the restaurants have had foreign cooks for decades. They didn't know how to season their food before. And I think they still really don't prefer to season it at home.
food in the UK is a lot better in the US. I have been visiting the US since the 1980s and there has been a steady decline. Food in the UK in the 80s was terrible, but now is superb.
I grew up on that bland British food as it was served up for school lunch - it still lives fondly in my memory though - and the desserts were delicious spectacular! (Spotted dick was everyone’s favorite with golden syrup on the bottom and sponge cake on top. All drowned in dessert custard. Yum!)
Like H. Salt’s logo I like peas but not mushy peas - tried them in Mayfair London I love your TH-cam fan - he’s under ten years old That part of NY is new to me Would love to check it out!
Hi UA, I personally like the chippery in the east village. I like the fish better there than the Salt & Battery. But they serve it with French fries instead of chips. Another great video. Give it a try sometime.
American style fish and chips then. It's offensive in Britain to even conceive serving them with french fries. They'd whip you through the streets and throw rotten tomatoes at you, in stocks
I recommend Bell and Hand Tavern in Boston for the best Fish and Chips in the U.S. It was amazing. I can't find anything as good here in NY. A salt and battery was okay but no where near as good.
Love Fish and chips! There is a wonderful place near me in N. Atlanta area called Wright's with HUMONGOUS crispy succulent fish 12 ", served with fresh fries and also have those meat pies and mushy peas as well as British grocery items. Most customers are British or Irish.
I got to visit South Africa for a month. I would say that I was just getting a feel for the place when it was time to fly home. I wish I could have stayed another month.
I think those chips would soak up that vinegar nicely. That's how I like them and I'm not from the UK. I use to eat steak escape fries with malt vinegar...so good! I love pea soup so I bet I would be a mushy pea lover.

i agree with you UA best place around for real fish & chips period its a cant miss
I'm glad you are getting some sponsors!
The cook looked so pleased to work there…😂
Yeah rite just throwing the crap in the frier
doesn't matter how it looks if the food tastes good!
You try living in NYC on that wage, you'd be angry like hell too.
I work there and that chef is the most chilled guy, he’s great, not always the most comforting being filmed 👍

In America we like our chicken wings and French fries which can be found in every Chinese take-out restaurant in the states.
Fraunces’s Tavern also serves great fish n chips
One of my favourite channels. Always intelligent and witty.
They used to have a spot in the lower east side years ago and I remember it being pretty great.
The little boy exclaimed, "A TH-camr!"
i'm off to london and edinburgh in march and i'm eating my way around! i'm so excited! all the fish and chips and meat pies and pastries!
If you ever come to las vegas be sure to try the Codfather..excellent fish and chips.
Saw A Salt and Battery on a Bobby Flay show a long time ago, and convinced us to take a trip to NYC from Canada. A great and delicious trip.
I lived in London 30 years and NYC for 15 years. A Salt & Battery is good fish and chips. It is no way as good as UK fish and chips, definitely much better than all other fish and chip joints in the 5 boroughs.
Potato chips are called crisps in uk

You gotta put plenty of Salt and Vinegar on. Vinegar first then salt. So the salt sticks to the vinegar and ask for scraps too they are free.
.. and it must be malt vinegar.

Good fish and chips cant be beat

Amen! And despite being an authentic European place, it's not pretentious at all
Thats the way in the Uk for the best places. Never eat fish a chips in a very tourist space like Leicester Square in London.
In my opinion you need to have some good British beer with that food
