He may have pioneered electro-rap with “Planet Rock” by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, but Arthur Baker’s career has encompassed virtually every genre with a groove.
In this lecture at the 2007 Red Bull Music Academy, Arthur Baker recalled the heydays of the Paradise Garage, working with New Order and why new music will always have the power to shock.

Beginning in his native Boston as a soul DJ, Baker got his first break and taste of the industry when his first attempt at an album was sold to and re-recorded by Tom Moulton. Undeterred by the experience, he moved to New York in the early ’80s and got to work with the Latin Rascals and Tommy Boy Records, putting a bombastic spin on early sample-led productions and spending time in Manhattan’s thriving clubs.
He then found a line in dance remixes for pop and rock songs and set up his own Streetwise label, narrowly missing out on the Beastie Boys. In 1984 he worked on Beat Street and two years later also lent a hand to Manchester’s New Order. Today Baker spends less time behind the desk but his sonic fingerprints remain all over the sounds you hear.
The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.

Arthur is a bona fide legend producer. His energy and passion for music is still undimmed. There's a great interview with him on ep25 of the Electronically Yours podcast with Martyn Ware.

Hip Hop are another aspect of musical decline as the many untalented people we hear on the radio can’t live without autotune. Autotune artificially stretches or slurs sounds in order to get it closer to center pitch. Many of today’s pop musicians and rappers could not survive without autotune, which has become a sort of musical training wheels. But unlike a five-year-old riding a bike, they never take the training wheels off to mature into a better musician. Dare I even bring up the subject of U2s guitarist “The Edge” who has popularized rhythmic digital delays synchronized to the tempo of the music? You could easily argue he’s more an accomplished sound engineer than a talented guitarist.
Today’s music is designed to sell, not inspire. Today’s artist is often more concerned with producing something familiar to mass audience, increasing the likelihood of commercial success (this is encouraged by music industry execs, who are notoriously risk-averse).

I personally love Bill Bailey's dig at U2. Where he demonstrated a catastrophic technical failure at a U2 gig where all his effects failed. He was just playing jingle bells.
