- Upon our arrival in Gonubie, we couldn't resist the allure of the beach, even though we were running late for check-in at our accommodation. Then we secured some supper and headed to our self-catering unit. The next morning, we were eager to embark on our exploration of the area. I started with a fantastic long walk on The Boardwalk and then the quest for breakfast commenced. We discovered Shellys Restaurant and Coffee Shop, which turned out to be the perfect spot. We also took in the sights of the caravan park and, of course, the picturesque Gonubie River. We moved to Gonubie in 1990 with a toddler and a newborn. It was lovely back then. We lived right down on the beach road. For the first week we couldn't sleep because of the ocean sound. When we left there we missed it terribly. Thanks for the memories.

Hi from a Gonubie resident (17 years and counting 😊). Just a little interesting information, the boat gardens and memory gardens, the surfboards and all of the other creations are the work of local residents, among them the Ratepayers Association chairman and his wife. Most of the cleaning up etc is also done by local residents and garden services.
My home thank you for this, Gonubie is a magical place.

Good memories of Gonubie and East London from when we lived in Umtata in the late 1980's and used to travel down to play schools rugby and cricket 🙂

Peet hi.some twenty jears ago my son stay de in Gonubi ,glad to see it looks the same ,we loved to visit. The area where he stayde ,the ground was black turf klay with earth worms as long as mole snakes ,i kidd u not, we were toled the second longesd earth worms in the world, hard to beleave you have to see it to beleave it.Glad to see the board walk is stil in good shape also the river side
Wowzer, how I wish we saw some of those earthworms, we had no idea! 😳🐛 The boardwalk is a great asset to this town, I made good use of it while we were there. Good to know that Gonubie is still as pretty as you remember, thank you for hopping on board and exploring it with us! 🚙😁
I knew you would sleep over. Loved Gonubie special place. I had many braai picnics on that river bank. Thank you for a nostalgic drive down memory lane. Can't see myself ever living there again...but it was nice to take a drive🎉🎉😂😂❤❤❤🎉🎉

@@DustBugsTravel its like I said its kidd's beach on steroids. High school is a new addition. Only a few years young. The road into town is about 7 years old now. No it is a very cute place and still have friends there. You driving past their houses....🤣🤣🤣 my cuzzie helped build that board walk. It is very very old now. More than 25 years old I think. I could tell you more but ....mmmm
That was something to experience. Last I saw Gonubie was very long ago actually decades ago, it has changed such a lot but still remains beautiful especially Kloof road, lovely next to the river. Thank you so much for this episode. 😊

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, we spent a lot of time down kloof street fishing at the gonubie river when i was a kid. My sister fell out of one of those hibiscus trees on one such fishing trip, knocked her wind right out but luckily nothing broken
Hi guys another stunning seaside town beaches crashing waves the board walk was brilliant sea and river mouth hotel looked busy with amazing views. The little teapot was cute Bramble river and Bramble Road is such a coincidence I live in Bramble tree cottages!!! The campsite was top notch I also loved the challets .driving through the up market suburb beautiful properties. Dassies just sleeping on the verge the masonic complex was intriguing another place where the churches cluster together. Kloof Road was a a good choice such a nice tranquil place by the river. The Eastern cape is definitely a beautiful place. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
The town is indeed a pretty one and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring. The boardwalk was one of the highlights, I had a great walk with nature all around me. 🚶🏻🌳🌊☀️ So you came from Bramble Tree Cottages in the UK to visit Gonubie in SA, which got its name from a bramble tree! That is quite the coincidence! 🇿🇦🇬🇧 There were quite a few interesting church buildings in town too. 🚙💒

Hi you two! What a lovely trip again! Setting off from your homely overnight place with rooibos cuppas! This is a beautiful town. To live in those suburbs must be wonderful. The view from the boardwalk of the waves rushing on the rocky pebble beach was really something. Endless green treelined streets/avenues with a surprise around almost every corner are stunning. The caravan park with its, some open, some closed, gates is so beautiful it must be the ideal place to get lost in. The wide peaceful river also fascinated me. Thank you for introducing me to this precious green gem called Gonubie! I will be on the roadside to hitch my next ride with you!

That boardwalk is a stunning feature of this place. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk. It's great to smell the ocean, have the salty breeze in my face and your sunny, blue skies above me. 🌊☀️🚶🏻I chuckled at your open / closed gates reference to the caravan park, luckily we could see most of it, I think! 😁🏕️🏡 Sonia's gut was spot on with Kloof Road and the drive along the river was beautiful. 🚙😊

Yes, there was a time where street lights were the norm in every town and place. We've also noticed that it's no longer the case in many places. 🤷🏻♂️💡

Don't mean to spam, but most of my teenage school holidays were here, and a term at the primary school. The place we lived in was essentially where the caravan park was, chalets, but I see long gone. None the less, you managed to krap out so many memories ❤

Gonubie is taken from a local name for a kind of bramble bush. It is not a very friendly plant! The thorns give you a big EINA if you walk through the shrubs.....!
Luckily the closest we came to a bramble bush, was driving down Bramble Street. 😁🎋

De kwikspar… het duurde even voordat ik besefte kwik is waarschijnlijk de Afrikaanse variant op quick? 😊 Super dat de Spar die boardwalks sponsort. Prachtig die houten wandelbelevenis en een gunstig teken dat langs de zee verderop de verschillende kunstwerken 🫖☕️ in tact zijn. Een zeer aangename aflevering op deze zondagmiddag! Trouwens ook gezellig dat jullie deze aflevering een geweldig ontbijt genieten aan zee na een zo te zien heerlijk salade diner de dag ervoor. Mijn reactie is dit keer wat korter want ben mij ondertussen aan het voorbereiden op, en ik durf dit bijna niet te zeggen 😅 … de reis per trein 🚂 naar mijn ouders te Deventer.
Yes, kwik is an adaptation of the work quick, you're spot on! 🛒 It was good to see Spar 's involvement at the boardwalk and we saw their name up at other places in town as well. The closest I've been to Gonubie was when I did a 5 day hike from Kei Mouth to Gonubie Beach. Fantastic hike, as he hike to all the coastal villiages. I was about 17 when I did it
You might've taken more in of the beach during your hike. I was finished when I ran through there, so can't remember much. 🏃🏻😅

Another lovely place to stay over. What a beautiful area. Love the boardwalk, would so love to go there. Good old Dusty! Your trusty security officer. I had a very life like toy snake that stayed coiled up on my dashboard. Great source of smiles and amusement. I want to know what that fruit is. Looks almost like a custard apple. Love the teapot sculpture. My hubby was the same with breakfast, a ritual of adding seasoning, he was also a worcester sauce fan, but would also try my hot sauce! Dis n tamaai wors daai!! Wind sock? I heard wet sock!!🤣😂Caravan park is amazing, starting to get summer camp vibes.
Sonia always feels safe with Dusty in the back window. 🥰🧸 The windsock wasn't wet that day, but I'm sure it is quite often. 😁 Our accommodation was great and we got a good night's rest, ready to explore the beauty. Breakfast is always a ritual for me and my Worcester sauce is a non-negotiable when it comes to fried eggs. 🍳🥫 You and Sonia with your hot sauce! 🌶️🥵

What a beautiful area, I was really excited a few episodes back when I saw you were travelling the Eastern Cape again, and it certainly hasn't disappointed. Loved the little dassie too lazy and sun happy to run away. 😊
We were super excited to explore a different part of the Eastern Cape. I always thought dassies were skittish, but lately we've seen quite a few that laze around in or near a road. We always enjoy seeing them. 🚙🦡

Unusual to see a pebble beach (with huge pebbles) in South Africa. I'm guessing that bit of coastline has an interesting geology. If I recall correctly, the Agulhas Current comes really close inshore in parts of the Eastern Cape, so my first guess as to why there are pebbles on the beach at Gonubie, is that when sea levels were higher, the current flowed along a sea bed that's now on that beach. (If I recall correctly, they've been up to 127 m higher, so everything lower than that has been undersea at some point in geological time. I found that out by asking someone about all the sand in the inland area I lived in - at almost exactly 100m above sea level according to Google Earth, and was told that the hills near our place were once dunes along a beachfront, with a sea level that gradually receded as the Ice Age began, till it was about 15-20 km away.)
If you can get out to the current one day (and haven't yet done this), I'd recommend it. It's really impressive. Biggest current on Earth, and it flows like a giant, fast river. Also the sea out there is much more full of life than it looks to be from the shore.
I often wish I could get a glimpse into the earth as it looked like thousands of years ago. By all indications, our surroundings today look much, much different from back then. 🌍 It's all way beyond my understanding though, but seeing the current sounds like a very interesting experience, as long as I don't have to reach it by boat or something. 😳🌊
@@DustBugsTravel Unfortunately you'd have to do it by boat. Or get on your windsurfer and go out quite far beyond the shark nets. :D (I have a bit of a dread of the sheer deepness of the Ocean, and the way the light beneath one vanishes over darkness that could contain anything, but am glad I suppressed that kind of feeling long enough to see it. I got a free ride on a Parks Board patrol boat, though, so the only other way might be on board some stinky skiboat full of old bait fish. Maybe put the word out among channel fans? Maybe one of them has a skiboat that smells faintly like dead fish sometimes? You might get lucky and get a free ride you don't have to paddle that way.)
Hmm ... just remembering a late uncle of mine who built himself a boat in the garage, and then went to sea in it with another uncle and an Indian friend of theirs who it turns out couldn't swim.
Which is a problem, because they got capsized, and the engines went to the bottom almost right away, and then they drifted on I think an eddy of the current (because against all odds it brought them all back to shore, and they all lived to tell the tale.)
The problem with ending up adrift in the main current would be that it could carry one very quickly not quite to Antarctica, but a long way south of Cape Town.
Methinks I'll give this one a pass. I don't mind the stinky boat so much as the drifting halfway to Antarctica. Nope, not for me. 🛶 If I survive to tell the tale, I'll be single before I get back to shore. 😁
