This may be one of my favorite fun facts about any Disney movie: The girl playing Boo at the time was a young child, and as such, they had some trouble getting her to stand still and record her lines.. So instead they followed her around the studio with equipment while she played. It makes Boo's lines feel so much more genuine!
Boo's real name is Mary Gibbs based off of her voice actress. She also signed her drawings with the name "Mary". Also some of her cries and squeals were used for baby Riley in Inside Out
This old 67 year old man's eyes get a little misty is a lot of places places near the end. The last view of Kitty/Sully with him smiling at seeing Boo as it fades to black brings tears down my cheeks.
At the start of Covid (when people were panicking and packing the grocery stores where I worked), my coworkers and I would call out "2319" whenever one of us would cough or sneeze.
Mike is without a doubt the bestest friend for a monster to have. Even after everything they went through, he rebuilt Boo’s door cause he knows how much Sully loves Boo.
Billy Crystal was originally asked to be the voice for Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story. He turned it down though because he thought it wouldn't be successful. To this day, he regrets his decision. XD So, when they asked him to play Mike in Monster's Inc, he made absolutely sure not to turn down the offer.
Fun fact: We never any of the monsters(especially Sullivan)full on "scare"a living child up close and personal until he does the simulation, where he ends up terrifying Boo.Before, it's all from outside of the room.
The lesson is that though we may be different, we are all one and we shouldn’t be afraid of or show hatred towards those who are different or we don’t understand
This movie is childhood memories for me I never get tired of rewatching this movie. And I cry every time I see Sully leave Boo back to her bedroom. And Mike is always a funny character.
You got to love that Pixar took one of a child’s greatest fears of a monster in the closet or under the bed and made a cute and funny story out of it. Great movie.
Oh, I remember having a VHS copy of this movie~ I loved it because the tape was blue. It's amazing how much fun the simple things can be for a kid, huh?
As a kid I was a big scaredy-cat so I couldn’t watch any scary movie without putting myself into an anxiety state. But this movie I absolutely loved and watch over and over on my family’s vhs. None of the monsters really scared due to me knowing “they are actually more scared of me than I of them”
Since my childhood i have not been able to look at that still frame of Sully roaring, altho this film is funny Pixar does scar you in unimaginable ways 0_0
It’s amazing. I rewatched it on HBO Max recently with my little adopted sis, my nieces, & my nephew and they loved it. I enjoyed playing the video game on PS2 also.
If you look at Boo's drawings when she shows Sulley of Randall, you can see the name Mary written in the corner, so her name is Mary, which is the name of her voice actor Mary Gibbs who was around two to three years old at the time of recording (she couldn't sit still for recording her lines so the sound guys followed her with a mike while she was playing, at a later time however, for recoding her song at the bathroom, Pete Docter had her in his lap with a puppet on his arm, making the puppet ask her to sing a song). She's the daughter of Rob Gibbs, an animator and storyboard artist at Pixar and later director of the Mater's Tall Tales shorts Air Mater, Moon Mater and Tokyo Mater. Unfortunatley he passed away in 2020 due to undeclosed complications, at only 55.
One of the greatest movies period, as per with most of Pixar’s films. My memories of this film date back as far as my memory can go and it never fails to make me cry.
The monsters are afraid of the kids because their cries and laughs can cause massive power distortions as we have seen when mike took the bear away from her. But when a child laughs while in the monster world they're so powerful that they can power up all the doors without the machine they use to power it, as seen when they're trying to get to boo's door.
I stand with the theory that one door they went through they scared a kid and that kid had the bubonic plague and a pandemic happened in the monster world
Am i the only that always feels to cry when Sully was saying goodbye to Boo. It reminded me of how (in my childhood)I had to say goodbye to my close friends and my best friend and knew it was gonna be the last time I see them.
Great movie... the Abominable Snowmans line "You want a snow cone? I make them myself... Oh, it's not what you think, they're lemon!" had me and my buddy practically having seizures in the theater we were laughing so hard! Maybe the "yellow snow" is an American joke?
This was always the most underrated Pixar movie to me. Not that anyone necessarily talks bad about it, just that not enough people talk about it to start with.
Makes me think of "Amphibia". Andrais:"At this rate, it'll take a MIRACLE"to find Anne!" (Cut to POV from surveillance bot of a giant float with Anne's surname on it and Anne screaming and donkey kicking the air). Anne:"Woo! I'm Anne Boonchuy! I'M ANNE BOONCHUY!"
Pixar Studios is located on what used to be the old Del Monte fruit canning factory where my grandmother worked during WWII and right across the street from the City Hall where my Dad was Mayor and I played in the old Jail in the Basement as a kid. The Studio was partly built out of repurposed brick from the Cannery.
Having seen the ending scene of the movie again since the first time when I was a kid YEARS ago still made me tear the fuck up when Sully parted with Boo.
This movie was the very first film that we got on DVD back then haha can't believe you've not seen it so far, but glad you caught up with such a Pixar classic
I wonder if time passes differently in the monsters' world. Perhaps the events of the movie, which obviously took several days, only covered a single evening in the human world.
I have a fan theory about the origins of the company. I think when they were starting out, it was with laughter. Waternoose was young back then and didn't know how to be funny. One night, when he was failing as usual, he got frustrated and screamed. This frightened the kid and filled up the energy tank without him realizing it. He left the closet and claimed that the child almost killed him by touching him. Ever since then, the company switched to scream energy and were deathly afraid of children. Only Waternoose knew the truth, but he'd never tell for the shame of failure. Anyway, I'd watch the heck out of that movie.
Undoubtedly my personal favourite Pixar movie (yes more than the original Toy Story) and while I love the main story of Sully, Mike and Boo (even more so as a father of two now) the thing I love the most is actually the world of Monstropolis and how it works, the time and care that the entire studio put into realising the world, as an amateur student of anthropology (study of social systems and structures) I adore how they figured it all out
That's what I originally thought too, and with all of those canisters I figured, scare her to death! :( - but nope, those were false canisters - a container meant to hide her / kidnap here - hence he kidnapped Mike using it... I have to say, everything about this movie is just perfectly set / written, and it's one of my all-time favourite animated movies! - Really laugh-out-loud funny in places, but also charming, thought-provoking and emotional - they did themselves proud, a true classic that hasn't aged at all.....
Somewhere there's a "blooper" reel from this film. Pixar did that with a couple more of their films, including "A Bug's Life" and "Toy Story 2". During the reel for this one, Mike is actually performing musical numbers from the company play he mentioned during the movie. Billy Crystal, who provided Mike's voice, originally turned down Pixar for a role in the first "Toy Story" film, so in a way this made up for that decision.
They have Kellogg's cereal everywhere, Dr John Harvey Kellogg is the guy who invented corn flakes. Check out road to wellville if you wanna see Anthony Hopkins play him.
Holy Moley!!! How did I not notice that before. The trailer where Randall ended up, parked next to it is the Pizza Planet Car Woody and Buzz hitched a ride in with Toy Story!!! 20 years and I never even realized!!
The scene where Sulley thinks Boo is going through the garbage crusher is an homage to (or ripped off from) the 1952 Looney Tunes short, Feed the Kitty, where the bulldog thinks his kitten is being baked into cookies. It's a classic, if you've never seen it, take the 7 minutes and watch it. You will recognize all the expressions on Sulley's face in that sequence. :)
Ending of 'Put that thing back where it came from or so help me' the musical: "And so we put that kid back where she came from, and she helped us to find a better tomorrow today!"
There was a theory going around that the monster world first made contact with the human world during a major plague outbreak & rather than piecing that together they just assumed that all human children were innately toxic.
There's the prequel, Monster's University, and they actually did a sequel but as a TV-show (I thought at first it was a spinoff, but who knows, it might be).
*Back when I was a kid I used to watch every movie I liked from my Mothers movie collection but out of the kids collection? THIS movie I loved so much! I watched it so many times a whole year or two haha*

You may think that Waternoose is a straight up villian because he cares of saving his company from going bankrupt but really he's concerned with prevent scream shortages to be so great that Monstropolis won't get enough power.
