I rod knocked the engine in my Night Rod a few years back, and decided to give Scott a call. I couldn't be happier with the results. He walked me through over the phone on the easiest way to pull the engine, then he offered me the chance to bring it out to the shop and tore it down with me since I'm only a couple hours away in Indianapolis (I have some videos on my channel about it if you're curious about the carnage). We found lots of "stripper glitter" as he put it from a spun rod bearing. He put it back together with all the fixings similar to this video, plus a few more goodies. He even bored the case up from 1130cc to 1250cc while it was apart just so I could get a little extra displacement from some takeoff 1250cc pistons and sleeves he had laying around, on top of machining out the old water pump shaft bushing that got smoked, and pressing a new one in; Without this, the case would have been trashed! Pretty sure mine was only the 2nd or 3rd one he had tried this on and it's still running strong today. I put that Ground Pounder exhaust on it and it's LOUD, like the videos do absolutely no justice to how insane the thing sounds now, and it will blow the tire off from a roll when you crack the throttle. Scott really has these things down to a science, and they go from a pretty cool bike to absolute insanity pretty quickly with these minor upgrades!
Did anyone notice the remark about the piston speed of that engine? Really impressive! Love this episode, I remember an episode with Doodle, best episode ever! Loved the patience and explanation of Craig to Doodle, the guy has definitely great talent!
The amount of time, effort, intention and attention to detail Craig and team is putting into this build is just heartwarming. What a great bunch of people you are sir! I have a feeling that after this bike is done and ready, it'll run and continue to run as good as any 'metric' bike.

Applying grease to your i dont think necessary increases torque but gives you a more consistian torque number. I work on mining equipment for an oem and we have to use grease on high street areas like wheel motors, struts and other applications like rod, head bolts etc.
Having a lubricant helps eliminate the stick-slip that happens due to friction when torquing a bolt down. The torque that you put on the bolt is the same, but the axial load the bolt is getting FROM that torque is different. Keep in mind that when we torque a bolt, what we're actually trying to do is load that bolt length-wise, like loading up a spring. The bolt stretches as you torque it down, and it's that pulling force we're looking to set. If the threads are dry, the dry friction is providing resistance against the torque you're trying to put on the bolt head, like trying to push a box across the floor; you push it, it resists with friction. This is taken into account when providing torque specs. If the threads are lubricated, more of the torque goes into turning the bolt than is lost in resistance. This would be like pushing a box along the floor and hitting an oil patch, suddenly its very easy to slide. So you're applying the same force, but less of that force is being lost through friction. You ARE correct in that it gives you a more consistent load value, because you're eliminating factors like rust, contamination, and corrosion that would increase friction and lower the load value. It also makes those bolt way easier to take out later, because you have to spend less effort fighting friction and breaking corrosion.
@thundercactus thanks for thar man, yeah I knew about the friction vs a dry vs a lubricated bolt but didn't know how to articulate it. You did a great job and appreciate that!
@Okurka. Sometimes, in life, you have to make sacrifices for your family. I sold it so that my wife didn't have to work. I currently do not own a motorcycle, but if I did, I would get another Vrod.
Excellent upload lots of wise tips. When using stainless I use copper grease, might be a UK thing. Titaina fastener are getting cheaper to buy, I always use them for brake replacements as a lot stronger and very light.
I've always wanted a Vrod. My dad loved these bikes and we always talked about finding him one so we could ride together. Unfortunately we never got to before he passed away. Would be cool to find one and give his ashes a ride
The craftsmanship, shown here, is phenomenal and humbling. And, based on Craig's recommendation, I bought the tire inflator and have no buyer's regret (yet).
Yeah we are job shop we machine bases and frames that will never see again, a floor cnc mill I would have to have a massive contract to justify the price.

HD - turning gas and air into heat and noise, and possibly a little power. Great job to get an extra 10% HP out of it without really going to town on the components, and a very enjoyable and informative video too.
Amazing best Bearded Mechanic Ever 134 HP love it Craig I am from Ohio Originally and a Harley Enthusiasts Have Heard Fitzgerald are the Real Deal even from Riders Here in Fl
Well I'd consider it to the predecessor to the Revolution motor in the Pan-American and new sportster. People are starting to accept them and make aftermarket parts for them like Brian Kruesi. Getting those old air cooled guys to change is unlikely ,but any dirt bike guy knows water cooled makes more hp off the bat.
Mine was a rocket. 128 hp. Fastest Harley ive ever been on and fun to ride except in corners. That fat tire didnt track worth a damn. Very low so scraped the pegs and would pull your boot off .
@@toby2138 Yeah, I heard that basically the bike is too low for hard cornering. Thats very disappointing. IMO they should update it to correct it and bring it back. But I know they won't.
This was a smart move to go to VROD expert and get the motor looked over. The 15hp extra is a nice bonus BUT the knowledgeable eyes of an expert and hence replace anything suspect, like the lawn mower plugs, is where its at for me. Also, I learned that the next level shop does NOT push bikes around the shop, you use a crane !
I had an 08 anniversary V-Rod. It was a hell of a bike. Great performance and appearance, but the riding position was medieval torture. I sold it for that reason alone.
Rounding up; 135hp. Wow. Never looked that closely at a v-rod. Slightly staggered cylinders?,... rods sharing a single throw like other v-twin makes? Side note; the custom v-rod in the shop with all the chrome was impressive. Looking forward to see where this goes. Cheers. 👍

I had a 2009 harley vrod night rod special (vrscdxa) and sadly when I had to move 1200 miles I could only afford to take my car so I had to sell the bike. I miss it so much. It was a very fun great bike. Can't wait untill I Can afford another one if I ever will be able too. I miss riding so much
My Ducat Scrambler's V-Twin engine looks tiny in comparison! Super interesting insight. You made my day! As usual, super informative and fun to watch! :)
As someone who owned an Indian scout for a minute, i wished i had a vrod instead. 134hp is nuts out of thah displacement. Ive heard of some guys getting 120 out of a scout with big bore kit cams and the right intake and exhaust. Obviously yhe scout it smaller and lighter but not by much. Only real upside it has is a 6 speed transmission. This solidifies the vrod is an awesome platform and it sucks Harley ditched it.

As a car mechanic its crazy how many other mechanics dont know how to use feeler gauges to set valve clearance it became a dieing thing for awhile but all the new diesel engines recommend checking the clearance at crazy low mileage everytime i have checked a Isuzu dmax they have been still spot on even at the 3rd check point..
27:45 Galvanic Corosion is a serious thing.
The whole dissimilar metals does have a severe impact.
(20 year Coast Guard ET here 😂 SCUBA certified too)
Thankfully, I had a C.O. That asked me to dive under, and "check the props"... and before you question... my C.O. Knew I was willing to climb the mast, and dive in the water for the safety of the Ship and Crew...
Others before Self.
What a great video to watch. Thank you gents for putting this together...
"Harleys are really easy to make better. You just replace Harley parts with other parts."
If I ever end up owning a Harley, 'll remember this 🤣👍
Applying grease to your i dont think necessary increases torque but gives you a more consistian torque number. I work on mining equipment for an oem and we have to use grease on high street areas like wheel motors, struts and other applications like rod, head bolts etc.
I enjoy watching him work on his bikes he brings into his shop so interesting 👍🏾
Greenville, OH is just up the road from me! Good to know!
I had an 06 Vrod. I have to say it was the best motorcycle i have ever owned! I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for all that you do.
If it was the best you'd still have it.
Gotta love a Guru that a hoot to be around, & knows all the tricks!
I had an 04 VRSCA for a few years, I literally had no self control with that bike 😆 loved it.
Greetings from Austria, thanks for this video . I have my V-rod since 21 years, a fantastic piece of machinery .
I've always wanted a Vrod. My dad loved these bikes and we always talked about finding him one so we could ride together. Unfortunately we never got to before he passed away. Would be cool to find one and give his ashes a ride
I love seeing experts passionate about their jobs. You too craig love all your videos. From Ireland
Nice to see Scotts shop involved in the build. Im a vrod owner and love the v rod content.
Best of luck in the bike build off!
Mate, this was a bloody good video. Great camera angles, so much knowledge and information. Awesome!!
The craftsmanship, shown here, is phenomenal and humbling. And, based on Craig's recommendation, I bought the tire inflator and have no buyer's regret (yet).
Don't trust the pressure, check with a good gauge. They tend to be on the low side.
@@mottorcyle5052 mine seems good, might vary from unit to the other?
Got 7 modern versions of that mill where i work. Biggest 2 are size of tennis courts. 5 axis machines for aircraft parts
Yeah we are job shop we machine bases and frames that will never see again, a floor cnc mill I would have to have a massive contract to justify the price.
Absolutely awesome. Seeing the VRod pros work on a VRod.
18:33 - VERY GOOD! This was a great little Craig explains moment! Love this kind of stuff! This segment would make a Home Run short!
Love the Vrod as it’s styled like a German bike and euro built with proper fit and finish. Reminds me of the Hammer Mercedes back in the day
Great video, those guys clearly have a wealth of experience and were happy to share it. Love that!
Gotta be over 155hp at the crank. Awesome numbers.
Long time watcher, first time writer. I'm another who don't own a bike but love this show. So glad we got back to the build off bike. Anxiously waiting for what your gonna powder coat.
First V-Rod build I’ve seen. Interesting process. Good luck with the build off.
The floor mill guy is awesome. Salt of the earth, humble, American.
This is one of my favorite videos so far! I love the details y'all talked about!
Really love you two cooperate on this vehicle! Scott is the V rod man in the US!
Great bike build, good find, could be the winner here
Thanks for that. I live less than 30 miles from Fitzgerald Motorsports and I never have heard of them. I've looked at VRods but now they deserve a second look.
Thinking about keeping that one aren't you. Those guys rock.
Great to see Scott and team getting some more exposure. Maybe someday I'll ship my NRS up there for a motor build.
Changed my mind on the V-Rod. I could see myself having a good time with one. 120hp stock! Nice! Great Vid, great people!
We can build them up to 1487cc and there is options for boosting and intercooling them. Close to double the stock HP to the wheel!
They're fun for sure, rides like a Cadillac, turning radius of one as well lol. Only get about 100 miles on the tank stock
For reference. A hair is .003 so that machine is accurate within just over 2 human hairs over 20 feet, not 7 human hairs.
Love your videos and all the work you do!
Man, I absolutely love the sound of it. Great bike!
Excellent video that guy knows what he’s doing. That’s for sure. It was just so beautiful watching him work.
“Oh nice, new video about the build off, I will enjoy this one”
Ended up becoming a v-rod expert HAHA
Thanks Greg
I bought 3 of the Fantik units based on your suggestions. Has become my go to on my bikes. Great product placement. Thanks for sharing!
I have a feeling Tommy is gonna go far in his abilities. He listens and pays attention. I see him having his own shop some day.
Thanks for the comment man, I would love to have my own shop but I can't see myself leaving Scott now, he builds some of the baddest bikes I've ever seen and his facility is second to none!
HD - turning gas and air into heat and noise, and possibly a little power.
Great job to get an extra 10% HP out of it without really going to town on the components, and a very enjoyable and informative video too.
Ive been a maintenance engineer for most my life, Never come a cross a four mill. Ive been educated, thank you.
H G Wells Time Machine.
Floor mill? You poking fun at me for not being able to pronounce certain things correctly?
😆
Just press dah button. That puppy wol turn out 17 loafs per day!! Smells amazing when it's workin.
Always cool when a plan comes together.
134 H.P. is nothing to sneeze at.
That rascal will fly.
Congratulations Craig. His shop is dialed in for sure.
Put a set of carbon fiber wheels on this thing, that's another 10 free horsepower.
Amazing best Bearded Mechanic Ever 134 HP love it Craig I am from Ohio Originally and a Harley Enthusiasts Have Heard Fitzgerald are the Real Deal even from Riders Here in Fl
Those guys are top-notch! I am amazed at how many collabs you yt guy's have with tiers that are really camera worthy and at ease. 🤟👍✌️♥️🇨🇦
People like to hate on the Vrods but I love them. They should have put that engine in a few different models.
It is really dependable and good power!
@@spartanx169x Check out the new water cooled Nightster with the Revo motor. I'd consider it the predecessor to the V-rod
Awesome! I’m excited to see what Paul Sr does performance wise with the Roadstar. Yours is going to be hard to beat!
We looked them up, most popular with articat snowmobiles and skidoo watercrafts 😂
Great to see knowledge and tips being exchanged. Best bike building /restoration show 🇬🇧🇺🇲👍
Another great video ..Thanks so much for having not just fun but informative videos..
I had an 08 anniversary V-Rod. It was a hell of a bike. Great performance and appearance, but the riding position was medieval torture. I sold it for that reason alone.
I don't even know how to ride a bike. But i love this channel 😂
131 hp. 86 - but happy I was wrong… NICE JOB on the build! One of the best channels on TH-cam!
Cheers. 👍
Awesome, man!!! I am from ohio. I wish i wasn't driving the big big truck. I would have loved to come meet you. Keep it up. You will win the build off for sure!
8:36 my dad ran machines in Dayton Ohio like this and when I was 14 they taught me how to run them for fun, and they would mill oil rig crank motor blocks.
Wow, Craig, I wouldn't be surprised if you packed up the wife and kids to take a job at Fitzgerald. Great build.
These guys seem to be the place to get a vrod singing the right sound 😎👍✌
That crane makes everything look easy… Craig dropping strong hints on what he wants this Xmas 😅
This shop does nice work. Those mods are nice
@4:09, that's because it works. 90% of the time, a reset is all you need in I.T. .
Great video. I know most diehard HD fans hate this bike, but I've always had an interest in them. I'm also a Porsche engineering fan so I have some bias.
