    That's really cool.
    There's also grass bridges made by the Inca, and one still gets made and maintained to this day. Famously, villages would have to collaborate with each other to build a bridge between them, and this had to be done every year.

    There was a video I saw about those two bridges at 8:10 & the high one is used during the high water flooding season. There was a local women that showed how they train the roots in hollow bamboo pipes that keep them dark(like they're in the ground) till they come out the other side. It was a new show.

      And on top of that; they're much cheaper, still very reliable, strangler fig tree root systems prevent lots of erosion, and they'd get stronger over time unless they get severe damage which would be very rare. If that issue happened, more roots can be trained to make a new bridge!
      If I do guerrilla gardening at some point, I'd love to try doing that combined with making a smooth floor on the bridges themselves to see how practical it'd be as a public bridge.

    I looked into grafting these sort of "banyan" ficuses (the ones that give these awesome adventitious roots) to a F. carica so you can also get edible figs. Unfortunately it appears that the banyan-type ficuses, which are in the urostigma subgenus, graft very poorly with F. carica and its relatives. Might be possible with an interstock, but it'd be quite the challenge.

    Last year, we visited 2 living bridges about an hour drive from Shillong. They were only 30min walk from the main road. Glad to see you enjoying your time in North Eastern India. So few of my countrymen visit it - in a way it is good that NE India has remained less touristy. The people of NE India are the friendliest !

    Ive crossed metal wire bridges like those but much longer and much skary , verry long and verry high bridge made from just 3 wires ( on one wire you walk and the otther 2 are to keep your hands on),otther dangerous bridge like these ive crossed was curved on the bottom and the safety lines were distanced too much right on the bottom ( middle of the bridge) and crazy friends decided to jump on it and also make it swing to the sides at same time .Those from roots are verry nice and beautifull.They are similar with the dome that i wanted to build from live willows.

      Yes, the rain is actually a bit of an attraction there. Its the "wettest place on earth" or was up until recently. Several locals apologized to me that it wasn't raining. I thought they were joking at first, but I guess its busiest during the rainy season.

    how come there's a rule against public affection? is the rule just for the bridges in particular? are they considered sacred, maybe? I thought maybe because they're muslim, based on the region. (my muslim stepfather is from Hyderabad but I heard about some muslim population in Eastern India too, I might be wrong though (please don't come for me, everyone, lol)

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Seemed like they were christian there from the cemetery headstones being crucifixes.
      It may have something to do with the bridges being sacred, but in India public affection is taboo. It might not be a big deal in cities anymore, but in rural areas it is. Even in Bollywood movies, you may see women dancing around with skimpy clothing and the implication that people are going to sleep together, but kissing is not so common. Up until recently kissing was actually banned in Indian movies.
