My friends think I am crazy spending time in the garden planting, weeding and watering. If they knew how much money I spent on raised beds, seeds, plants, fertilizer, mulch, compost and pest control they would know for sure I was crazy. I think some people think we garden to save money when in fact it would be probably be cheaper to buy them. I don't care that those tomatoes I harvest probably cost $5.00 each I do it because I enjoy it.
7 years ago when the garden was in full swing a swarm of grasshoppers (locusts?) came in and ate everything - absolutely everything - down to the ground. It was hard to bounce back from that one. But, the next year it was better than ever maybe because of the thick layer of grasshopper manure that covered the ground.
It is an honor to learn under you Scott. As a young person who is trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can, I am very grateful for the time and effort you put into this, and especially for your passion in sharing with the world.
I have learnt all these traits mainly from you through all your videos that I’ve watched, your live sessions and your personal advices. You have made me a much much better gardener indeed. Thank you so very much, I really appreciate you and honor you🙏
I'm a Union Carpenter, when we walk onto a jobsite all you see are stacks of metal studs and by weeks end you went from nothing to having a building raise up from the ground. It's the same as when I garden, I plant a seed and at the end of summer, the seed turned into a vegetable from nothing
Your voice just make me smile. As a nurse PATIENTS, commitment, observant, curious is just a part of living . Gardners are those that are one with self. Trials n failures is what at gardening is all about 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️🙏🏻
Yes observing and curious what you're building in the library and background. looks interesting growing preparedness, thank you for sharing, hopefully see you this summer, passionate gardening🇨🇦🇺🇸🍵🤗
Very nice. Explains what we are about. And reminds us - like Churchill said - "Never Give Up. Never, Never, Never." [Because you don't want to quit before the miracle happens!]
I wanted to take a moment to say "Thank You So Very Much Gardener Scott". I have been watching your channel for close to a year and truly appreciate the knowledge and gardening advice passed along through the many great videos I have enjoyed viewing on your channel. You have become a very important "Friend of the Garden" and my gardening journey. Michael Z. located in New Jersey zone 6b
Congratulations on your 250th video! 🥳 You're my go to gardener when I have any questions. You have a wealth of knowledge and share it all. Thank you, Gardener Scott!
It's a tough time of the year for those of us with our hearts out there in the frozen dirt somewhere. Thanks for this Gardener Scott. You had me chuckling and nodding in agreement!
I lost a few of my spinach seedlings indoors, but I didn't waste time complaining about it and just planted more. I want to harvest a lot this year! Going to harden them off in a couple weeks. Great video, Scott! Thanks.
Thank you Gardener Scott, you nail it again, and so proud to be a Gardener and be part or your tribe, Everyone should be a Gardener, Congratulations on your 250 videos. I will see you Monday on your live stream . Cheers:)
Wow! As a first time gardener, I've wondered if I have what it takes. I can check off each of these 10 traits and am very encouraged! Thanks for this video!
Thanks to all of your help and guidance here I am feeling prepared and so excited to plant my first ever garden very soon!👏 Thanks a bunch for all of your hard work and dedication to teaching us!! 🤗
I'm crazy about gardening! All I can think about most of the time. ( and mushroom hunting) I live in Indiana and can't help myself. Family traditions are impossible for me to break lol
Thank You for a very encouraging video! I never really thought about what makes me keep gardening and by watching this video I realized that I have a lot of those traits, especially passion. Congratulations on your 250th video. I can tell you love to share your love of gardening!
Patience: Waiting for evening temps to rise. Persistence: Trying to successfully propagate citronella grass indoors or outdoors even after 5 failed attempts 🤷♀️🤪. -Observance: Oh I am so sorry I burned your leaves you were only supposed to be outside for 30 mins! Optimism: I can’t wait to see the beautiful colors in the garden. Yep...4 of the 10 stuck. Need to watch video again. You already know repetition is key to learning at any age. 😂
Thanks for another excellent video. You comprehensively encapsulated many of my own thoughts and feelings about the traits of successful gardeners. This outline should be memorialized in a few ways (T-shirts, posters, your webpage, etc. ) I invite anyone who wishes to improve their gardening knowledge to join the Monday 11am EST Livestream and to look back through the 250 educational videos that you can find on the Gardener Scott Channel. Congratulations of 50 Livestreams and 250 videos. May success continue for you.
Thanks mr Scott! Such a great reminder for all of us who are on this crazy gardening train. For a few years I’ve been trying to grow chard. Chard is like “the easiest plant to grow” right!?!? Every year my plants are lost to leaf miners and every next season I plant it again and try a different method to protect my plants from leaf miners. 🤔🤦🏼♂️ this year I’m going to plant chard in pots on my deck 10’ above the back yard. Maybe this time it’ll be a success. If not...yeah I’ll probably try again next season 🤣😂
Me and my girls spent the day rebuilding the greenhouse that the 80 plus mile an hour winds destroyed last year after we built it. I think that's called persistence.🙃😉😊❤
Love to watch videos of other gardeners. I don’t know everything, but watching and listening to others, I’ll be a lot better gardener in the future. Keep up the good work(for my benefit)
Great stuff Scott! Took me 3 years to finally get a substantial harvest, mostly due to lack of commitment/understanding of things from myself. It's amazing what you can do when you really lay into something and remain open to learning!
This is my second year gardening and I have learned that my number one weakness is patience.I plant a seed and an hour later I'm asking why it hasn't sprouted yet? Lol. Thanks for all your wonderful videos! I've learned so much from you channel in the last year or so. Please keep up the great work!
@GardenerScott, you’re so freaking AMAZING! Such an inspiration video. With Spring approaching, I feel like you’re getting us pumped for our Gardening Super Bowl! I’m a huge fan...please continue with the exceptional content!
So true! Sage words to garden by. This is my second garden year and I was very happy that anything grew! I ended up with a lot of veggies. This year I started my seedlings in my greenhouse and I’m succession planting. I also added spring and fall gardens in my plan. BTW I really enjoy your videos ty
Great video. Thank you for helping us stay motivated. Most of my seedlings are a disappointment and my first thought was to give up and just buy my seedlings moving forward. However I’ve come around...and now committed to making a supportive environment where they will do better!
Hey Gardener Scott! As a new gardener, second season since the pandemic, I have felt so many emotions when in my garden. Thank you for this raised garden bed side chat that I find very practical. My own wife has sensed that I am different in a positive sense after tasting the "fruit" of our garden labors but I still have doubts and often question how to proceed and whether I have the right temperament to be a gardener. Historically, I have been hard on myself but listening to this video has started me down the path of self reflection in a practical way similar to that type of advice one might read about in the classic book "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius. I have heard on another channel that gardeners live long lives and I wonder how much of that is the result of learning to be content and understanding of ourselves, our gardens and others. Cheers!
Hi, Craig. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying this new path. I think that gardeners not only live longer but also enjoy more of that extra time. I hope you have a great gardening season this year.
You are so very right on all aspects & full of encouragement! Moving from an area with fantastic soil to the desert... well, I can’t call it passionate... more like a dang challenge I’m gonna concur 🥴😂😂😂. I have several gardener videos I watch, yet you’re the only one who has challenges & understand what Northern Nevada has to offer. Appreciate your positive attitude & try to learn more about how & why our failures happen & possible ways to change that.😊 Have a good week ahead☕️☕️🫑
If I may, I would like to ask your expertise on something please : I have raised beds that is quite heavy and dense with soil that I made from the Hugel method. I had an okay crop last summer but think with a looser soil such as that from the square foot gardening method, it might produce better. Is there an easier way other than digging most of the existing soil out and replacing it with compost, coarse vermiculite and peat? Maybe I could just dig the top third out of each bed and replace it with the above mentioned mix. Ideas, suggestions??
I am not Gardener Scott, but I do assist in answering some questions on his Monday Gardening Livestream. Firstly- I would like to say that you are close getting the soil you need for growing you just need amend that top part of the growing soil. You usually do not need to remove anything but to add by mixing in a nice blend of any available light organic materials mixed into the top 1/3 (about 6-12 in) of that garden to help with heavy soil. Each of the things you suggest sound great, (also any manures, finely chopped leaves, etc. ) but try to get these ingredients in weeks before your spring planting. It is best to improve your soil at least annually, but ideally more often by doing similar to the above for excellent soil health and tilth.
@ Gardner Scott, Hello Gary from AZ , question when your Harding off you plants when you do that if you take plants out side when you return to house do they go back under lights ,?? thanks Gary
I have a table by the window that I put them on. Without a window, they should go under lights. Here's the video that shows how I do it: th-cam.com/video/P9ov_BeQsus/w-d-xo.html
Scott is the Bob Ross of gardening, I love it man! Zone 5a, waiting for go time!
Lol... that’s how I describe Scott to my family, the Bob Ross of gardening... learning through happy accidents. 😀
#GardenerScott with the best gardening video of the year!

Start praying earlier in the season to prevent plagues
The 11th trait : Watching Gardener Scott! 😁
Now I know why I love gardening so much, I am stubborn and insane . Always knew it.
It is an honor to learn under you Scott. As a young person who is trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can, I am very grateful for the time and effort you put into this, and especially for your passion in sharing with the world.
My favorite video of yours Gardener Scott !❤
Can I say Amen?

We should also pray over the garden just as we should pray before eating.. Failure is learning just as we are molded to become a better people.

Thanks for sharing Scott. Kind of reminded me of the new trainee company propoganda videos I had to watch as a teenager.
Good stuff GS! The camera looks for the traits made me laugh.

Congratulations on this milestone! Spring's a coming!!!

Sounds like a chat to a 1LT straight out of upgrade flight training. I’ve been chair flying my garden plan in my mind’s eye since November!
Lots of similarities. Chair flying my garden does take me back to chair flying some of the trickier flight maneuvers.
Great Video Scott. Itching it to get some seeds going. Hoping to get some spring crops into the ground in New Hampshire this coming week!
Wow! As a first time gardener, I've wondered if I have what it takes. I can check off each of these 10 traits and am very encouraged! Thanks for this video!
My first garden going in this year as well! Best wishes on your gardening journey!! 🪴

I believe we gardeners are resourceful, curious, creative but mostly stubborn ;)
Haha I made this comment right before you said stubbornness!
Love to watch videos of other gardeners. I don’t know everything, but watching and listening to others, I’ll be a lot better gardener in the future. Keep up the good work(for my benefit)
I now know that I need more of these traits. Ty for all your hard work - you’re the best !
Very Inspirational, thank you.....these tenets apply to nearly everything in life. In my classical Indian yoga tradition, this too is what we teach.
Me encantó este video!! 💚
That's right !
Thank you Mr. Scott
Everything likes attention... likes to be touched for encouragement. I totally agree 👍 thank you
Great video! Love how you used committed and insanity in the same video! :)
I am looking forward to gardening this year. Your channel has helped me alot. Keep it up!
These are good traits to have and to refer back to, write them down and keep it in your Garden Journal. And don't forget to have Fun.

again a graet video Scott Wilson thank you verry much ;)
Gardeners are insane - but we have fun!! ;)
Thanks!
I’m only hitting about 3/10😂I’ve had success but now I’m getting where I can improve.
Patience: Me checking my sprouts multiple times a day ☺️
Same here! 🤣

I still have some growing to do (no pun intended). But I have at least a little bit of all of those traits.
Gardening is an art and I'm an artist. I also indulge in other arts soooooo I really can't help it
Most importantly, it's a spiritual experience
I agree. 🙂
" normally sane"- LOL
I find we potters/ceramists have all the same traits. Maybe that makes me a better gardener. :)

Try for at least 10 total hours of light per day.
Hi Gardener Scott. Do you know why my garlic plants are having yellow leaves? Please advice. Thanks
It may be too much water or too little water. It could be poor soil.
I don't know I think we are all just a bit crazy, and a lot stubborn
Scott, now that you have been retired a little while , do you miss the Galileo Gardens? I bet they miss you.
I do. It was a fabulous experience and it was time to move on, but there are many wonderful memories.
I suppose digging up my beans on a regular basis to see if they have germinated is a bad thing? Oh dear.
In the video can you see the face behind Gardener scotts head 😊😊
Yes now days those are the guys I call
John Travolta and Arnold Schunegro
Those who are not to waste my time and learn something beneficial 😂
Who is the guy over your right shoulder??? looks like a guy with a 4x4 in his eye imagination!
It's just one of my neighbors.
