  • In this video I take the Journeys Off road Astro van 4x4 conversion kit and make it work on my straight axle swap 2001 Chevrolet S10. I was able to modify this kit and take the troublesome electronic shifting 4wd system and convert it to a full manually shifting transfer case. Like a np231j or np241. It took some work to make it work, but it turned out great. This works by replacing your encoder motor on the t case with a bracket system. This should work on any vehicle with the NP233c in the S10, Blazers or Sonoma's.

    Good Work!
    Wish you would have made this video a year ago!
    I threw a 5.3/4l60e in my CJ5 and did a hybrid 233/231 t-case and had to make a custom 4x4 shifter.
    It works just fine.....
    But this kit would have made my life so much easier!
    I never wired anything to the pcm for 4 low.... Maybe i should do that lol

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice, apparently the computer doesn’t like having it in 4low without it knowing. But then again I won’t have any working wheel speed sensors just the tcase speed sensor so who know if it would do anything. I did it just in case.

    I made my own manual shifter on my 233 and my 4wd low only worked for a couple miles after my sas. I assumed the chain was stretched. I would put it in low range and the truck would go 20 feet and pop out. That kinda makes sense. Currently in the process of swapping in a nv3500. The 4l60e did not like the big tires.

    That's pretty sweet. I'd like to do that with my beater Blazer. The elec motor died so I've been shifting it with a crescent wrench but that's a pain in the ass🤣

      Mine's a 5spd though, so it looks like I'd need some different bends to make it work

  • @kyhillbillys10
    @kyhillbillys10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You could have swapped in a np231 from a first gen s10 to get the manual shift. Only issue is they bolted to the trans and not the floor like this kit. You may want to work with them to develop a kit for the s10

    That's a really nifty kit.
    My mom wants one of these 4 door trucks either the 4 door dodge dakota with the 5.9 because i wont let her get one with the 4.7 in the years were looking, or one of these s10's or sonomas. She wants to sell her 2019 kia and get one of these late 90s early 2000s 4 door trucks. I went over a ton of stuff with her and she seems to like these a lot more than newer stuff and she wants something up off the ground more than her little car and she hates the technology in her car. We have a lot of jeeps and I have an 01 durango so I'm kinda partial to mopar but since I know you were looking at these different 4 door trucks do you have any recommendations? Originally she wanted a durango like mine but wished it had a truck bed so I started showing her the 4 door trucks. I think she may like the chevy better and I'm fairly familiar with the reliability and issues both would have. But I'm curious your opinion for something to leave stock and just drive around town if you have any advice maybe I haven't found or thought of or something to watch out for?
    I don't know if you browse the local Craigslist but there's a yellow 4 door sonoma from a dealer in Federal way for 8k she's absolutely in love with and we could get it but I'd have to look it over really well because if they don't go down on price that's a lot for one of those I think but she can still pocket cash from selling her car after.
    Sorry for the super long comment but I'd really value your opinion if you have a chance.

    Not having looked at a schematic or really studied what you're doing but my guess would be the ground wire is there to tell the PCM to recalculate speedometer readings when in 4lo as it would read and shift stupid if it was not being adjusted for the lo gear ratio.

    I did a diy version of this years ago on my 94 blazer, worked well but the shift pattern was a little backwards

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yea. If you go directly to the shifter without linkage it’s a little wonky.

    • @FlawedOffroad
      @FlawedOffroad ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MuddyBeards4X4 that’s pretty much what I did because the encoder motor fried and I didn’t have money to replace haha. It did not like being in 4low unless I hit the button on the dash for it too, so you’re probably right about that ground wire to the ecm

    I like your work you don’t work like your billfold has no bottom. Hate to go backward in time but I have a question on your transfer case when you installed the front output shaft out of Jeep did you keep the 1.25” chain from the Chevy? Doing the same to mine makes me a little nervous . Good work keep it up 👍

    • @MuddyBeards4X4

      Stock chain, from the Chevy, same as the np231j.

    Hello, please advise what are the hand shifter positions in order to engage to 2wd, 4 wd high and 4 wd low ? I cannot understand it . I have NP233C on my chevy astro. Thanks.

      Forward towards the dash is 2wd, you pull back to engage 4wd.

    What about the front actuator to lock in the front tires?

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have a stock front differential you would need something to actuate it. But mine is straight axle swapped. So not needed.

    Doesn't that gray wire go to the plug you unhooked when removing the electric motor on the case? Seems like they would have it hook up down there instead of running a new wire.

    • @MuddyBeards4X4
      @MuddyBeards4X4  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all unplugged, the grey wire goes nowhere. So it is not needed.
