The first Celtic bracelets I made 20 years gao, where done with just three pairs of pliers, soldering block, borax cone and a small butane torch for £10. A few basic tools are all you need to get making wonderful things. Thanks for watching. Dave

    Hey Dave, that's a gorgeous bracelet!❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for the tutorial. I realize it's more professional to solder all jump rings and I'm still getting familiar with pick soldering chain/links. Sadly, I don't have a proper workspace where I can brace myself to maintain steady hands (my kitchen stove is my bench 😩) so it's quite challenging but I AM getting there, albeit slowly. 😄 You gave some very helpful tips and great advice so again, thank you very much. I can't wait to make this bracelet! 😊

    I was really impressed when I first saw your Orion TIG welders demos. My imagination went into overdrive at the idea to do away with the vagaries of soldering. To my mind, chainmaille would have been the most obvious use for it. I thought about you and your wonderful chainmaille pieces but I see you are still doing it the old school hard way. As I've clearly not had the chance to touch one, just wishful thinking still, shall I conclude the TIG welders are not suitable for the links type job? Not that I'm complaining, you are a wonderful teacher and this has been an excellent opportunity, but I would really like to know. I do enjoy all your videos and if there is anything I could complain about is they are not enough of them. Thanks for sharing!

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Orion welder for most of my chainmail jobs, due to the immense speed and accuracy advantage and also that I can weld after a piece is assembled. For this particular bracelet the links are very large and thick, so it would be difficult to get a good weld all the way through. Strength is not an issue with this bracelet, So I could have welded them, but this may have rounded off the corners when the silver melts. So in this case torch soldering produces a much nicer and neater finish, which is important to keep the square edges. Also anyone watching and wanting to make this chain will be able to have a go, with basic tools. Whilst I am very fortunate to have such wonderful tools, I appreciate that I am very lucky and most viewers don't have access to such things as pulse welders, so it would be unfair of me to keep relying on that method. Thanks for the lovely comments and thanks for watching. Dave

    Thank you very much for posting these videos, Mr. Wilson. I have learned a lot from you. I want to ask if you have ever put a magnetic clasp on one of your heavier chains. I'm making this belcher chain with 14 gauge wire for my father, and I don't trust him not to wear it when he's working in his garage. I want it to come off before his hand does, if you follow. Do you suppose a magnetic clasp would be strong enough?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do fit magnetic clasps for people who struggle with lobsters. Here in the Uk I use LANGER solid silver magnetic clasps, from cooksongold,.com the 10mm one is rated up to 750g weight ! Very strong indeed but simple to use. Avoid cheap ones, get Langer if you can. Thanks for watching. Dave

    Dave what is the firm stitched polishing mop you are using on your motor? I've got a motorised sharpening stone that I want to convert in to a polishing motor but want to make sure I get the best mop for doing a finishing polish

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've answered your own question. A 'stitched' mop has all the layers stitched together which keeps the mop very rigid. I used one here as I wanted to keep the square edge on the rings. However normally I would use a loose cotton mop. This has the layers attached at the centre (obviously) but the layers are not stitched. hence they can flare out and give a very gentle softer polishing action. Remember to set different mops for each polish and do not cross contaminate. if you want to convert a bench grinder, you will need "pigtail" adapters, which attach to your spindles and have a tapered screw thread (pig tail) for use with mops. Note there are left and right versions. Dave

    what is the material you are using for soldering. Is it normal tin/led based (commonly used for wiring) or any specific one. Please suggest.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO ! you must NEVER use tin solder on precious metals.That's only for electrical work and plumbing. With precious metals you must use silver or gold solder, which is matched exactly to the grade (carat) of the metal and the colour. Anything less and the material will be contaminated and cannot be hallmarked properly. In this case, I use hard silver solder. This is why jewellers solder with torches (not soldering irons). Perhaps checkout my video on soldering. Dave Soldering vid here... th-cam.com/video/en2KLTb-CV4/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Dave, first of all huge fan of all of your work. But I wanted to ask for your advice, so I've been trying to solder my sterling silver rings that I've made multiple time but I keep melting the ring instead of the solder.....what am I doing wrong

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, if your solder isn't running, then 99% of the time it is simply down to cleanliness. Even grease from fingers can prevent solder from running. Ensure the area to be soldered is down to bare metal. Clean with alcohol (methylated spirits) to remove any grease and don't touch that spot. apply flux liberally (flux your solder too!), heat evenly and gently around the whole area to be soldered. Don't use a high temp pinpoint flame just on the join and blast it. Be meticulous, work clean, and heat gently with a soft blue flame. Hope this helps. Dave

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its 1.5mm square. 15 awg round is 1.5mm diameter, so presumably 1.5mm square is also 15 AWG Note precious metals are AWG whereas ferrous and non precious metals are measured in "Guage" which is a totally different system, and may be where the confusion has come in. 15 GA is not 15 AWG. You'll hate me for saying this, but its soooo much easier when everything is metric and uses the same measurement system. (aspect ratios for example) Hope this helps. Dave

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure now, unless i mentioned it in the video. At any point you have two rings and hence four stands of wire So, as a rough guess it's going to be at least 4 times the length of the bracelet. allow for overlaps and also for the circular nature of the links. and you're probably more accurate saying 5 times the length of the bracelet. so an 8" double belcher like this would need at least 40" of wire. can you make miami cuban links ?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A cuban link is simply a curb chain. It starts life as a regular 'single' belcher, the same was as this, but using thick round wire, in a compact and dense chain. when you've made the belcher, it is twisted (one end in a vice on end on a bar) and this will form a curb chain. File the sides quite heavily to create a Cuban link. quite a few videos showing this. see link. Dave
