  • Rob from ASUS compares the boot times for the ASUS U36SD-A1 with 640GB HDD ($899) vs. the ASUS U36SD-XA1 with 160GB SSD ($1099).
Both notebooks have otherwise identical specifications with 2nd-Gen Intel Core i5-2410M processors, NVIDIA GT520M graphics, and 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory.

What a lot of people focus on is boot up speed, and snappy opening of programs, but its also important to consider such things as processing large video files, or moving large files across hard drives, etc. Most of the lower priced SSDs have very poor performance when copying large amounts of data after the cache is full. In other words, its designed for less than 9 second transfers, and if you go above that, the SSD moves at a snails pace, and is actually slower than a fast HDD. Nobody mentions this, because of marketing reasons.

Yes, of course, SSD are still expensive, and also, for storage, you are better off with an HDD anyway. And 1TB is more than enough, I myself have only 500GB and it's enough for me! As for the SSD, at least, 120GB, but I'd recommend 250GB, because that way you know that you have plenty space for all your programs and games, maybe! And also, a 250GB SSD costs around 90€ over here, so it's not crazy expensive either!

I don't think people get it the difference between the two. SSD are way faster in transfer rate and acces time, consume less power and is shock resistant. It's all electronics. A good desktop HDD have 150 MB/sec transfer rate (a lot less for laptop hdd) while a good SSD can saturate a modern sata 3 interface, about 550MB/sec read/write. Acess time for an HDD is about 12 msec in very best circonstance while SSD have typical .1 msec. Don't forget that HDD get fragmented all over the disk easily which prolongue horribly the acces time into seconds while there is files fragmentation on an ssd, it make no difference in access time. All memory cells have the same figure.
There is no comparaison, SDD are better then HDD in every way. The only hold up now is the cost of an SSD memory cell (nand) which is higher but has been fallen dramatically from the last years. So in 2 years the HDD is a dead horse for most computer except data center.
The best scenario for now is having an ssd for windows and applications with a regular hdd for data storage. However this is out of question for a laptop.

In reality the difference is even bigger. And whats more: At the bootup test what you did not test is to start doing something immediately after startup. Thats where i feel the biggest advantage. On HDD even if you see the desktop it is quite a while before you actually start working. Try opening Word or a Browser and see how long it takes it to actually function normally. Its gonna be infuriatingly long. On SSD basically as soon as you can see the desktop you can start working. Open you Browser and it will start up and be operational in 1-2 seconds.

I did nearly exactly what kam hagh wrote. I used to have everything on my SATA HDD 1TB but i recently got me a 240 GB SDD and i created 2 partitions. 120 GB for the OS and 120 GB for Games. My SATA HDD is now used for downloads, music, backups and other stuff that doesn't need to be loaded fast.
Also i recommend installing often used programs (like if you are a webdesigner, photoshop) on the SSD OS partition.

  • @Quick_in_and_out

This video should of made it clear that they are comparing the SSD with a 5400rpm HDD which is super slow lets be honest. I upgraded to a 7200rpm drive recently and my laptop is now plenty fast enough for loading everything and very respectable boot times. So the price/speed trade off between an SSD and a 7200rpm HDD is one worth taking into account because for the price of a 120GB SSD you can get a 750GB (or more) 7200rpm HDD which is only a little slower.
My advice... wait for the SSD prices to tumble in 2014. By 2015 the prices will be perfect. But if you can't wait then 7200rpm HDD's are in the sweet spot right now.

But i don’t see anyone explaining it properly? Why is SSD better than HDD in some occations and HDD better than SSD in other occasions?

    • @pags5zonda623
      @pags5zonda623 5 ปีที่แล้ว

SSD costs much more than HDD, so ssd for boot drive and programs used often and HDD for big files like large games or movies.
Before install make sure your computer is off and unplugged, also make sure your grounded to prevent any accidental damage.
To get both to work together, make sure the SSD is plugged into a 6Gb/s SATA port and HDD can be in either 6 or 3Gb/s. With both plugged in and powered, close up your computer and turn it on.
Once windows opens you use the search button to find "disk management". Find your new drive, probably the same name as the product number on the SSD and click "new simple volume". A wizard will open and walk you through the steps. Make sure the full space is available, it should be by default but might not be.
After installing the drive I suggest googling how to move your boot drive to the new ( probably D: ) drive. Steps can vary depending on your version of Windows.

Every ssd is different, motherboard/ports also play a role. From the moment I hit the power button, windows loads up in less than 10 seconds, it's blazing fkn fast. Needless to say, games load fast as hell. It's kind of pointless to get it if you play a load-once type of game like cs go or something but it's extremely good for games that require long loads or constant loading like total war series. Waiting 2 goddamn minutes for a total war load was lame, now it takes less than 15 secs.

  • @Theiftanlazx

When compared to a hard drive, an SSD is much faster because of the way it stores data. An ssd uses flash memory which can be accessed instantly but a Hard drive uses discs which are spun very quickly and the information is read by a needle. The way the hdd stores information is through bumps on the discs which represent 1 or 0 which is binary form

Most people don't install more than 100 GB of files onto the SSD. Usually only the OS and large programs/games are loaded... with smaller files like documents there's not really a performance increase, so extra space isn't needed for that.

Yeah, SSDs have got some tricks up their sleeves, while HDDs are stuck with that hand which can click at any given time. I'd rather spend the extra for a faster 256 GB SSD than to have storage at the expense of speed. And defragmentation is no longer a deal on SSDs.

i got a new laptop with just a tb hdd, but with a free slot for adding another drive. when that time comes, the ssds will have better storage and of course cheaper too. if video editing and heavy processing was a regular thing, it would be different. depends on useage...

Is it the same, using an external HDD to compensate for the low storage of the SSD?

    Hello,
Thanks a lot for your information!
Will be interesting to know the differences between the SSD manufactures. Which one is better or they have no any quality differences without the capacity.
    Good lucks to YOU!
