- Tell me which bikes I've missed in the comments!
It's the Yamaha MT-10, isn't it? End video… sorry - join me for a vlog where I talk about the reasons why bike engines are so much more soulful than their car equivalents, including some wanging on about exotic car engines I've been lucky enough to try.

Tim, I've owned a few triples in 50 years of biking and like that configuration a lot. However, my ideal bike would have at least 120 BHP, gear driven cams, hydraulic tappets and shaft drive. Nobody makes such a machine. The older I become, the less I like maintenance - or paying someone to remove camshafts to adjust the bloody valve clearances !
The most visceral experience I had was as 250cc racing 2 stroke in a yz250 on a motocross track . Hitting the power band was something I never got bored of and slightly terrified me. Later moved to a yz125 which I could ride harder .
Had a Yamaha triple and now 2 triumph triples and found triumph ones more refined and overall better. Do love triples.
Interesting topic. I went through 650 single, 600+650 inline 4, CP3 to a 650 V2 right now. I love them all.
Cp3 is a cracking engine❤
@@everydaybiker my MT09 was an amazing machine, but in fast corners my SV650 is more fun for me.
Great watch again Tim. Ill look forward to the tour series 👍🍻🏍️
Can’t wait for the MT10 Sp vids. That’s a scratch you been wanting to itch! Enjoy the next 10 years of bike engines and stock pile the greats coz when they’re gone they’re gone.😢
The best engine for you is what you need. If we're talking larger capacity bikes IL4s in general don't come on song until higher up the rev range so it's sooooo easy to look down and oh dear what will I tell the magistrates.... triples are a compromise.... but for me and my style of riding the twin wins because its so easy to ride one quickly and smoothly without being on the brakes all the time and all that torque is there immediately so you're off out of those corners quicker that other types of engine. They are better on the fuel too.
Enjoyed that Tim! Very good idea for a vid 👍
Thanks 👍 I was mostly testing my microphone after having to gut my helmet at the Ducati trackday 😂
Cool topic! Sound and torque are the icing on the 2 wheeled cake.
It depends on the application.
For the kind of riding I do, I enjoy V4 motors the most, I went from a V-max back to an i4 (z1000) and it felt meh… it did whatever I asked but in a vanilla way. These days I ride a VFR1200F and the WAY it makes power is addicting, especially when coming out of corners.
Not the fastest thing in the world (more than I would ever need), it’s fairly heavy but the character of that motor is beautiful, it’s as reliable as a brick and plenty comfortable for my aching back.
When your back cries no more, switch to the VFR1200X, it also has better punch out of the corners.
@@pl1068 the X is cool but I prefer the F riding position and the power is irrelevant since the tire can only take so much but mine is tuned really nicely.
Harley 114 softail ST with stage 1 Vance and Hines will be a good choice, handles fine for a cruiser, has a lovely engine, you will understand the HD formula once you have accepted its not a sports bike, but a cool easy going day out.
Twins are my favourite engine, I have 3, KTM 790 with arrow can and tuned, Indian FTR1200 with S&S race pipes, crazy angry motor, and a Moto Guzzi V100 with a Zard titanium end can, all 3 bikes sound brilliant and have well over 100hp, more than enough to have serious fun at sane speeds, loads of torque and engine breaking, makes for effortless riding, a few vibes tells you where the revs are, unlike a quiet 4 cylinder, too smooth for a motorcycle in my opinion, also very wide engine design, makes a bike feel bulky, each to there own, none are bad (maybe a single isn’t great) so we are certainly fortunate today👌
One of favourite engine is the Honda Goldwing 1500, super smooth loads of low down grunt, but spin it up and turbine power
It was also so reliable with boring hydraulic valves
I like the feel of a revvy inline 4. They're what I started on and, after so many miles, just what I've got used to. Can't wait to test a mate's recently acquired SAS out of curiosity though!
Make sure you stick the SAS in rally mode!
Great topic! Over 50 years I’ve had single, twin, triple, and fours. 2 and 4-stroke. On my 5th BM boxer, the love of my life. Currently the air cooled RnineT Urban GS. At full chat, I feel I’m piloting a Spitfire..or should that be a Messerschmitt? Brilliant engine!
I don’t have enough varied experience, but I love my 2017 speed triple engine. That’s why I like the GT+ you’re on so much.
I’d love to try the twin of a super Duke R. I’d also love to try and HD 114.
I've ridden everything from single 70's 50cc to 1200+cc engines; two-stroke, 4-stroke (those 4cylinder 2 strokes were scary as hell and even more so skinny "rubber" tyres :D ). Ok, not odd cases like the Honda NR and I'm also not versed in off-road thumpers though I drove a CB500 (everyone drove one :D ). I always have been a street/racing type of rider.
I'm glad everything evolved and evolved for the better. For me however, and for the use i'll give to a motorcycle in coming years, triples are probably the best engine types. The Yamaha's CP3 though is near perfection as it serves for any riding style, bike "format", and you can find joy on any RPM range.
That being said, I'd still have this Yamaha engine and a a big parallel twin for those long open highway asphalt tours ( Tiger1200 or even a SuperTenere would be great. The SuperTen is as smooth and comfortable as it gets without going GoldWing or RT motorcycle).
What I dislike though, is that things are getting silly in some departments with way overpowered and overpriced bikes. I can also risk way overweight depending on the intended use.
Favourite engine (experienced so far) would have to be the 1260 multi twin coupled with DQS & full termi. Great gandalfs beard….
Tim, I love engines too, MT-10, R1250GSA, and Husqvarna Svartpilen, I've got it covered.
Tim, have a go on a Low Rider S or see if you can borrow Fen Tours 131 FatBob.
I've just traded a 9 month old Tuono 1100 V4 Factory in for my 2nd Superduke (with the promise of a 4yr warranty). Both have engines reviewers rave about. So why did I trade? The V4 in the Tuono was ace, but every time I went for a ride it just begged to be wrung out just to hear the noise and generate some involvement. So wanting to protect the mortgage payments and avoid bubba in the showers I decided it needed to go. The Superduke on the other hand involves you in the lunacy earlier on. It gives you a bit of a slap in the face at more sensible speeds with a huge slug of torque and character. It's like a crazy mate who eggs you on, threatens to kill you every now and then, but ends the sentence with "sorry mate, I was only joking".
Ive a 2019 aprilla tuono factory & I agree it likes to be let lose but I also love the looks to much, it bloody beautiful, that only an Italian bike can be , I also have a moto2 street triple and apart from the power it's a stunning engine 😊
Totally agree - I’d say the SuperDuke at 50mph is as fun as the Tuono is at 120 😂
Great description 😂
The Harley big twin engines are hilarious fun. Try the Low Rider ST
B58 is a great engine in the car world for what you can get a m140i for etc sounds great goes great and can be turned up very easily as for bikes I’m on a gen 3 cp3 engine can’t say it’s my favourite as I haven’t tried enough used to really like my yzf426 single piston thumper off road bike
For me, boxer or V-twin engines, for torque and power delivery.
I.e. BMW, KTM, Ducati.
For sound..........
Aprilia RSV-4 or MT-10!!
Give me the screaming howl of an in-line four on full chat every single time!!! ❤
Awaits GT+ review… tick tock. 😂
I've edited it!
Tim, for an introduction to Harley: give the Harley Low Rider S (with a Stage Kit) a go. Another poster has made the same recommendation.
For a 'modern' Harley experience, the Pan America which is well within your wheelhouse. I think you will like it.
As for engines, the one in the 2001 Yamaha FJR 1300...it was a revelation relative to what I had at the time (Ducati, Moto Guzzi, and a Honda scooter).
A Harley 😂😂😂
That 1400 in the ZZR is absolutely epic. Kawasaki worked a master stroke, so much torque and bhp but so linear and manageable….
Totally agree we are spoilt & long may it continue 🤞🏻. Have had many bikes over the years, the most memorable ones being (in order of ownership iirc) RD250, 350YPVS just because they’re wailing 2 strokes, GPZ900 liquid turbine power, 1150RS BM lovely inner “thrum” which suits long distance touring, 1050 triumph triple lovely midrange punch & howl, RR3 fireblade effortlessly smooth but raw as the revs rise, 890Duke R just hilarious & lovely pop on overrun & between upshifts. Now where’s the Lurpak 🤗……
As soon as I said the Lurpak thing I remembered she’s been dead quite a while 😂 that’s quite a list of bikes!
Engine wise, how does this bike compare to the Tiger Sport 1050 (2016+)?
Not sure I want to smell your hair man but great videos!
To be honest we’re completely spoilt for choice in the motorcycle world engine wise no doubt we all have our personal favorites. 👍
My fave was the MT09 ..loved it ..hated the Triumph tiger 900 triple with 270 crank horrible horrible vibey engine ..now I’m enamoured with my GS1250 …might try and sneak a go on either V4 rally or Diavel just for the hell of it to see what the fuss is all about ..I think the MT10 might be on my “ I wish I had bought it” list
Like everything else the grass look greener on the other side I brought a 2005 GSXR Hayabusa now I am bored with it until I tryed a mt-10 ZX 10 zx1400 Kawasaki super Duke R no thanks keep my modified GSXR Hayabusa.
Hard to choose, I love my present Tuono V4 engine and my Tiger Sport 1050 for more calm rides.
I liked the Rotax V2 engine in my old Tuono also, perhaps more than the Superduke Gen 1 which was good low down punch. My old MT09 triple is a great engine which I turbo kitted and suited that engine well. Still have the kit and now wondering if it would fit that GT. All great engines in their own way. Cheers.
A turbo MT09 must’ve been nuts! Was it always on the back wheel?
Naa not that good at wheelies unfortunately. It would come come up in fourth if it didn’t spin up. You really had to plan and look ahead as despite all the mods, I could never get the brakes to match. It was a fun project.
Congrats on the new bike. They do a kit for the MT10 also :) Thanks v much for all the great videos.
Definalty a bike cafe argument starter this one.
In my child like mind it would have to be an original 98 R1. Yes an Inline four that didn't rev massively high compared to the 750's it would knock off the top. But OMG what an engine.
Oh and the Mrs wants to get a Harley 883 iron, so test that one please. Not my cup of tea but the other reviews on TH-cam are mainly those Americans.
Do I have a favorite engine configuration 🤔? We’ll, in the garage right now I have a big single, a 90 degree V-Twin, and an inline 4, so I guess I don’t really have a “favorite”, I just love motorcycles 😆😆😆👍!
1000 Rotax twin in earlier RSVs. Wonderful.
I've never ridden one but I love the look of the later RSVs… always wanted one of those or a Ducati 999
There are only 2 cool Harley’s, the breakout or the fatboy, and they both have a good new bigger engine. Be very interesting to see what you think of them.
As for best type of engine…… I think a V4 or V twin from Ducati, though I’ve not ridden an r1250r yet…… waiting to see if they get the new GS engine upgrade…..hubba!! Hubba!!
For some reason I find all triumph engines very dull……. So not them……. But wouldn’t it be cool if more 6 cylinders came back….. imagine a 6 cylinder MV 😍
Enjoyed that Tim and wholeheartedly agree on your central tenet that we are spolied in the bike world. Whilst shouting out for car engines I have to put a word in for the supercharged lump in my F Type jag which goes and sounds epic, and if we're talking best sounding engines of all time then forget cars and bikes and go Rolls Royce Merlin at full chat :0)
PS How's the flying going?
Haha I didn’t realise you were an F-Type owner Andy! Makes sense though 😜 that V8 is so incredibly anti-social, I love it. The latest F Types are pretty subdued compared to the bonkers first ones with no particulate filters in the exhausts… same with the latest V10 R8s.
As if I've left terra firma in the past 6 months!
My 10 is my first choice, but I wonder if the tracer is more comfortable than the M10?
The Tracer's seat is definitely more comfortable!
For me the old 675triple and currently the 765triple of the triumph street triple is by far the best triple engine. The yamaha CP3 is good but riding a tracer after a street triple reveals the superiority of the triumph triple. I don't like the tiger 900 triple though. They spoiled it with that stupid crankshaft. My own bike is a 1050 tiger sport triple ( with the old speed triple engine ) and I like it . Even more then the CP3 but the 765triple is far nicer then this 1050 triple.
The current ducati V4 in the multistrada is genius even in the new diavel. I loved it.
I also liked the smoothness of the kawasaki ninja 1000sx 4 cilinder. Very nice.
I never was a big fan of 2 cilinders
My favourite is the KTM1290 previously it was the Gen 3 cp3 from Yamaha However, a lot can be said for many more😂
I might have to try them all just to be sure 😂
@@timrodierides lucky you. definitely worth exploring if you can. 👍🏻
Triple ftw
New Tracer 9 gt plus, 890 smt or used super adventure s?
Super Adventure S for nuttiness… Tracer 9 is very impressive but expensive. 890 SMT very good but not quite sure I’d pay list price for one (or any KTM)
@@timrodierides thanks, is yours still for sale?
Ask me again tomorrow… it's meant to go to a new owner tomorrow morning but you never know!
I think it’s a bit easy for sports bike engines to seem interesting and different, as they more easily meet current regs.
Also you sit with the engine tucked close to your nether regions on bikes, so you can feel the differences characteristics in cam profiles and induction lengths etc.
I think the last exciting car engines have already been built. You’re always better insulated and further away from the spinning oily parts though, so less small character differences are evident.
Even in sports cars, there is a belief that they should be civilised for daily use!
So I think only truly silly supercars will butter your muffin in the same way as bikes can.
I think the four wheeled equivalent to bikes, are really the track / folly cars, like BAC Mono, Atom, some Caterham models etc.
Some even have bike engines from time to time 🤓
I’ll never ride bikes as experience these engines though. I lost my younger brother at 16 and swore to my Mum I’d never put her through the worry.
I for one, look forward to you trying the most silly Harley in production. I think you should wear an extremely un Harley like full set of protective gear and your normal full face helmet 👍🏻
Didn't know that about your brother - sorry to hear that. I might ask for the most expensive Harley and ride it in full GS Gore-Tex
@@timrodierides
Cheers, it was a long time ago now!
The less appropriate the gear, the more amusing it’ll be. White romper suit?
I'm also Harley-curious, and would love to hear your take on one on the channel. I don't particularly care which one, though I'm of the age that I think a Street Glide is probably their most appealing.
The thing that keeps me from pursuing the curiosity further here in the US of A is the Harley culture turns me off. My local dealership has regular events featuring motorcycles, beer, and scantily clad women. While I might enjoy motorcycles and beer equally, I'd prefer to keep my limbs intact and avoid mixing the two. And as a service to my young daughter I'd rather set an example of women being badasses and riding motorcycles and not being fodder for their decoration. I know you can ride the bikes without becoming part of their target demographic, but it's been enough to interrupt any latent curiosity I might have and steer me towards their European motorcycle counterparts.
I know exactly what you mean…
Triumph 1090 has to be up there. It was so good at every RPM. Also, can I vote the honda 500 180 degree parallel for, possibly, the world's greatest and yet most boring?
Slight tangent…… what’s the chances of you doing a go pro review for bike riders?
I want one for chrimbo, but I need some pointers 👍😃👍
I’m doing a review of the new Hero 12, yup!
@@timrodierides top banana 👍👍
Look forward to it. Remember some of us are thickies and don’t know the basics, like if it can download to your iPhone or if you use Velcro to attach it to the bike 😃
I'd take the phenomenal naturally aspirated V12 from Cosworth featured in Gordon Murray's latest cars over anything from Ferrari and Bugatti!
That’s very true, forgot about that. I don’t like my chances of ever seeing/hearing one in real life though!
I also forgot Pagani because I’m an idiot
the honda nc700 has an interesting engine because it's half the engine of a honda jazz ... allegedly. only revs to 6500 which is unusual for a motorbike
As a Honda Jazz owner I have been tempted to drive it through a giant bandsaw
Cool video, but I expected you to talk more about different engine configurations and why they are cool and which one you find the coolest. Instead, the answer is almost all motorcycle engines are cool?
Been fortunate to have owned a lot of bikes in my life but I would tend to have a soft spot for a powerful inline 4. Sadly once we get to 2035 it won’t matter anymore as we will be forced to buy electric new. 😢
Get the biggest Harley they make and wear leather chaps 😂
For your Harley attire wear assless leather chaps and…. Nope, just them 😮
Try the new sportster to get a flavour of harley and their ‘butt ugly’ adventure thing
Aprilia rs250.......
No Harleys please 🙏
Like SUVs or BMW GS's they are a 'lifestyle' product and are therefore deeply embarrassing!
Don’t bother with a HD
No ... if it hàsnt got 200 bhp it's for girls...
