Kiss Alive was a major influence during its day. Peter Frampton brought out his own live album "Framptom Comes Live" a year after that album. Kiss during the 70s' poured a lot of heart and soul into their albums during that decade. I'm so glad that they were inducted into the Rock N' Roll hall of fame, and even so, I still hear people trying to discount their abilities as musicians.

Intelligent analysis. Better than shelling out gobs of money to watch guys in t-shirts and jeans. The mystique of not being photographed w/o makeup was cool.

catman pc Gene Simmons said the reason they didn't want the public to see them without make up was he didn't want fame, he just wanted the money and the only reason they decided to finally show themselves without their faces painted was they were losing their popularity and subsequently all of that money Gene loves so much. Gene is kind of a prick.

As a fingerstyle guitarist, Ace was actually the reason I got a guitar. Gene is very underrated, almost never looks at his hands. There's discipline here.

Is this where the old farts are hanging out? lol. Yeah I saw them in 79 too. New Haven CT. I didn't care for the direction they seemed to be heading with Dynasty ("I Was Made for Lovin' You", the new colorful costumes, etc).. but it was a damned good concert, anyway.

    • @kilgoretrout3966
      @kilgoretrout3966 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lafelong That tour was also cut short due to being their most expensive production to date, and they weren't selling out arenas as strongly as before. At least one night at MSG was dropped, and the 2nd show in LA sold poorly enough they played the 2nd show in a smaller venue than the Forum. But Australia and Japan went nuts for them, so it filled that gap for them.

You mean people are just supposed to lie and pretend they like everything? Sounds like you've got maturity issues. Across the board, KISS is the worst high profile band I've ever heard. The lyrics are horrendous and of an infantile nature, very, very cringe worthy, and musically equally base and poor. And that's the honest truth. If you want to talk about great bands like Zeppelin, Floyd. Yes, Rush, etc, I'm all for it. But I'm not going to make nice about a band that literally makes me cringe

    • @Gamevet
      @Gamevet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Frankincensedjb123 Oh please! They're a lot better than Motley Crue, Poison, Bob Segar, Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent, Krokus, Ratt, Deep Purple (yeah I said it) Quiet Riot, Edgar Winter ( I saw that dude 3 years ago and his playlist was as thin as paper), George Thorogood (I like his music) and Megadeth.
Listing the greatest bands of all-time as a comparison is silly. Black Sabbith is considered an all-time great, but I don't think that their musical lyrics and talent is that much better than that of Kiss. Go listen to 2000 Man (written by Mick Jagger) and Hardluck Woman. They are really good songs.

The sad thing is that even his ex-bandmates seem to think so. In fact both Stanley and Simmons are slagging off all the other members in their biographies. Then again, it's well possible that the Rock'n Roll lifestyle had taken its toll later on in their career so that negativity may not entirely be based on big egos alone.

Peter was the best vocalist in the band to be sure. Early on anyway, Paul started developing a purer voice around the time of Dynasty but Peter had a raw, raspy bluesy voice that Kiss seriously lacked after his departure.

  • @BradYaeger

Got to admit the KISS ALIVE record set the tone for my musical journey and the solo for Black Diamond is my favorite of all time. And I know theres a million other more complicated solos but that one just grabbed me as a kid. The tone was so full, and the offbeat phrasing as Paul joined in and doubled it gave me goosebumps and still does. I had on HUGE headphones and played in on 8 track when my folks were asleep because they didn't want "Devil Music" in the house. I think it was KISS themselves that tried to downplay their abilities for whatever reason, but these Cat's could play, and Paul has some of the most iconic rhythm parts of the last 4 decades.

"Black Diamond" is by far my favorite KISS song. It felt as gritty as New York City looked at that time. KISS was key in giving my abusive father a musical middle finger in 1978. These guys, quite literally, saved my life! Any performance I do, I think of how KISS always imagined they were playing Madison Square Garden. Not enough credit is given for being able to perform accurately while putting on such an entertaining performance! 🤘🎶💖

Kiss' Animalize tour was the first "real" concert I ever went too, March 13, 1985.
Open floor seating, swimming through the sea of bodies, everyone trying to get closer to the stage, the triumph of making it to the front, and the constant battle to hold the position.
I loved it! The music was...well Kiss, the solos good (Gene's stood out), but the show...the choreography, the lights, the pyros, the in between song banter, some of the best ever.
Still have the ticket stub. They always put on an awesome show.
I've seen them a few more times over the years, so I've seen all the different members.
The Reunion Tour August 10, 1996 was one of my favorites, finally getting to see Ace and Peter play with the band (loved their solos).

I used to think that KISS were cheesy and mostly about their cartoonish image and flashy showmanship until I really started listening to some of their mid-70's material, such as this song - this is simply one of the best hard rock songs of all time. Great vocals and lyrics, great riffs, great guitar solo, and cool unique arrangement - sheer rock perfection. 100,000 Years and I Want You are also awesome.

Kiss was the 1st band I became a fan of,and I learned to play the guitar because of Ace Frehley. The first concert I ever saw was the Kiss Destroyer Tour in July of "76 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Bob Seger was the opening act. A few months later "Night Moves" came out and the rest is history.

Like a number of my generation, Kiss was my gateway and introduction to rock music. Paul always had the cool looking guitars -- the flying V, the explorer, and that beautiful black Ibanez -- because he was a rhythm guitarist, to my juvenile mind those were "rhythm guitars" whereas the Les paul was a "lead guitar". So I told my first guitar teacher I wanted to be a rhythm guitarist -- he was floored! All of his other students made it plain they wanted to play lead. "Okay," he said, "you're going to need to really understand how chords work, and have a solid sense of time." So I worked at that -- and developed some skills that weren't so common in the local pool of young musicians. Served me well when I later became a bassist, as well. All because of -- rather indirectly -- Paul Stanley. ;) Anyway, Black Diamond is a great song -- Paul would have been in his early 20s when he wrote it, and I think it's quite a decent composition for a young, inexperienced songwriter. Good on him for handing the lead vocal to Pete -- no one can sing that song like he did.

KISS was a very talented and people definitely overlook that. All of them could sing and write songs. Peter wasn’t the greatest drummer in the world but he fit the music they played at that time. Their songs were very well written in my opinion. It was the music that people loved, the makeup and their live shows were just icing on the cake.

This wasn't my favorite song of theirs, but a really good analysis of what it takes to make it. I heard Detroit Rock City in an old peoples restaurant last night in FL and at least 20 people were either singing, dancing, or playing air guitar. It was actually quite comical, but KISS rocked several generations and you can never take that away from them.

With Peter singing the band is showing how versatile they are with 4 viable lead singers. Ace influenced hundreds of kids to play guitar who had great vibrato. Kiss is one of my all time favorite bands. Please do an analysis of Zeppelins Achillies performance in Knebworth.

They did things differently for specific reasons, and most people got lost in the make-up part but forgot about the killer licks/melodies and vocal range of Paul.. I'm almost positive that Rush started/opened for Kiss back in the 70's
Edit: Their double live LP is still considered a benchmark in recordings.

Saw KISS before they became famous waaay back in 1974 in Salt Lake City. They played a small dance/concert venue that we use to go to every Friday night. No big stage, no guards, we were right there with them. Pretty cool as a 15 year old getting to talk with them before, during and after their show. Had us hooked from then on.

Phil, you nailed it. its was the first concert I ever went to. I think I paid $6 and it was in 1976 I believe. My dad couldn't believe I would pay that much for a ticket. LOL. But I always liked the music. From the fall 1975 release of Alive I was hooked. It wasn't the shock value of the makeup. It was for the energy or the music in the live recording. Anyway, I love your video comments. You follow along and have the same expressions probably 90% of us do while watching. Music is such a great commonality. Thank you for sharing these videos. Maybe do one on Elton John in his crazy outfit days of the 70's? Or Bowie?

I bought my first KISS album in the late 70's . KISS ALIVE II it was, I was maybe 11 yrs. old. I took my son to see them live when he was about 13 yrs. old( he's 27 now) at Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta ( I don't remember the exact year). We were near the last row of seats before the lawn area and the flames was so hot I lost some hair ,lol. Literally I could feel my skin burning. Ready to go see them again.

KISS! Thanks for taking the time to point out just how musically tight these guys were when they were on their way to Rock & Roll World Domination! Growing up and learning to play music in the mid '70's these guys were like the Beatles to musicians starting out in the 60's. Solid playing, singing, and really cool and melodic songs all the way up to at least the Love Gun album. Classic stuff that fueled the R&R fantasies of millions of teenagers back in "the day".

Saw KISS open for RUSH in 1975. They were both touring their 2nd LPs. I saw KISS several times in the 70s and they were great every time but that first show was another thing. Gene and Paul switched up guitars but I loved those L6-S guitars Paul had. They were using 100W Marshall 2205 amps then. The JCM 800 series hadn't been released yet. I think they had the most Marshalls on any stage at one time. They were endorsed by both Gibson and Marshall at one time. I saw several spreads in GP magazine back then eluding to the point.
You should have done Deuce or Strutter.

I've seen KISS live four times 1980, 1992, 1996 (makeup again tour) 2003 (symphony with the MSO) 1996 was epic I got free media tickets tier 2, four meters from the stage. When the elevators rose and swung out Paul was barely two meters in front of us. My mate who had never seen them before was literally shell shocked, we went for a drink after and he sat there staring into nothing saying I can still see them like they are in front of me.

I first discovered KISS I was 12 when KISS Alive I came out,and I heard Rock an Roll all nite and Party every Day on the radio and it was a hard rock, catchy song and did not know that they had makeup on. I got that album and seen them a year later in concert with all the gimmicks, great show, but I liked the music. At the same time I started playing bass and realized they were not hard songs to play. From the first album KISS to Love Gun,I was big fan, sure they were not Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath Deep Purple AC/DC other bands that I liked.R&R started as music that was not hard to play. It was attitude and rebellion now I am 57 still play bass and still like the original KISS

I knew the head rigger at the area they played in, I met the band they were all so gracious and cool but one the makeup went on, it was all about the show and, what a show. I was left feeling amazed. The stage show one of the best.

Saw these guys in the fall of 1976. I skipped a band concert performance after being told by the music teacher that anyone not being there because of the Kiss concert would be kicked out. My good old mom covered for me and told the instructor I.came down with the flu. After that things were always better between me and my mom. Lol.i wanted to go to that concert with my whole being. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. The satisfaction and memories of that whole experience is still with me to this day. The band went a direction in the late 70's, image wise, that disappointed me. The TV movie they did tarnished the seriousness of what they stood for prior to that but by then there was so many other distractions in life with girls, college and working that for awhile they seemed like a distant memory. Especially when they took the makeup off and showed their faces on MTV for the first time. I'm glad I got to see them make a bit of a resurgence in the late 90's.with the original line up. This video and your comments brought me back to time where these guys were bad asses and not commercialized. They must've scared the hell out of my parents but they never once said so and endured many nights with the Marantz amplifier pounding out their tunes spinning on vinyl with my buddies and I staring at the album cover yelling over the top of the music about how amazing certain parts were of each song. Rock on! (Imagine me striking the pose from the back of the Alive album cover here. Lol)

I was 5 when this came out. Dad had the album. Yup my dad started me on KISS, Black Sabbath and a ton of other stuff. From the late 50’s forward.
It’s really cool finding this early film stuff of KISS. Before it became the crazy monster show. But underneath there’s almost always been solid music. Tightly constructed. If it had just been about the makeup, it would have never lasted

Many thanks. I'm far from a Kiss fan and have been a hater since I was a teenager. And not too long ago, I took the time to learn a couple of Kiss songs. Seriously, I am impressed with their guitar parts and how well they work together. And learning some on their stuff is like a primer for rock and roll guitar. ..... And there are some impressive songs such as God Gave Us Rock [ there is a freaking key change in the song and a pain to learn picked part ..... ] and Roll and World Without Heroes.
