ABANDONED Underground Bunker in New Orleans

  • Constructed in the '50s, this bunker was designed to withstand a Nuclear Blast or any sort of attack on the city. It was widely thought that New Orleans would be a prime target for an attack at the time. Unfortunately, it was abandoned in the '80s and has been rotting underground, flooded, ever since.

I am now 65 yrs. old in 2018. But when I was in St. Dominic School (1958-1966) all classes, one by one, took a field trip walk to the brand new shelter with our teacher and some parents. It was fair large, but only for a select few City Officials. At the time, we still thought that a nuclear bomb would hit us any day. It did not bother me very much, and as I recall, we were told by my parents, to meet with my sister, and to run home, not stopping for anyone. In any case, I don't recall worrying about it very much.

The Summer of 1959 between my junior and senior year in high school I had a job with the City Dept. of Property Management work crew. One day we worked in this bunker on the air condition system. It was quite impressive back then.

That would have been interesting to explore. Too bad the city doesn't bring in pumps and dry it out and restore it. In times like we are now- people need to see the reality of these places, so that we can work to avoid this situation.

It would certainly have made for a cool museum or something. I think now it's too far compromised to do anything with unfortunately.

Yey1na's Journeys , New Orleans is right at sea level most of it is below but not all of it, even if they do pump it the water would just come back when it rains, that’s why we can’t have basements in Louisiana

Dang it’s overgrown quite a bit!
I lived right there on spencer ave (you can almost see my street in the video) in the late 90s.
My friends and I referred to this as the “bong-shelter” where we would go smoke when we weren’t at the park around the corner.
At the time there was only about a foot deep of water or less flooding. Door was wide open and pretty cool was something like 1.5-2ft thick with massive bars that could be moved in and out
It was open at the time and I’ve been through it a few times.
There is a massive ladder sorta like a built in to the concrete one you’d find in a sewer that goes up a column to a hatch on the back side of the top of the hill.
Most everything was intact inside. Lots of vintage soda bottles from the 60s-70s
Unfortunately I am the reason the door is shut.
Some neighbors apparently called the police on us for hanging out there.
Military came and pulled us out at gunpoint then sealed it shut and locked both gates.
It was the bomb shelter intended for the governor so I was told and considered a military installation (abandoned or not) and if found on the property again it would be a federal offense with serious jail time.
Definitely one of the cooler places in Lakeview. Thanks for posting up! Brings back fond memories

The door wasn't welded shut in 2015 when I moved here. Some friends took me by there. We didn't get further than the bottom of the steps. It was flooded to the point you couldn't really even get down past the second turn in the steps. Creepy place. Especially at night.

As children, we were actually told that in the event of a nuclear blast, we were to go into the hallway of the school, sit down with our backs against the wall, and duck our heads under our crossed arms. WHAT?? And that would have protected us from becoming incinerated?? "YES! That is right!"
