My oldest daughter and I use to go to French Quarter Festival every year for years. She was suppose to get married there in April of last year. Everything was planned. She was even going to have a Second Line parade down Bourbon. Unfortunately she passed away 2 months before her wedding. I haven't been back since.
but our family and friends will go down to spread her ashes. We all said after she passed, that on her way to heaven she stopped in New Orleans. I'm going to start going back down. We loved it there. I know she's there in spirit.

Another oddball thing to add: don't be alarmed when strangers make small talk with you, or even go into stuff going on in their personal lives, including but not limited to medical history. We'll do all this without even learning your name! 😂 And please don't think someone is being condescending or creepy when a stranger calls you a pet name like "darling", "honey", "baby", or "sweetie", especially if you look younger than them.

You are not lying! Lol. The first time I visited I was thrown off by this because in cities up north we don’t talk to people we don’t know other than a simple head nod to say hello and if a person you don’t know DOES start talking to you, they usually have an angle, and they want something or they’re setting up to rob you or something. New Orleans is my favorite city in America to visit.

    Some "Do's" (from a local):
    1. DO ask locals for recommendations and directions. Easiest way to identify a "local" is someone dressed in a work uniform that may be coming to or from work. Generally, the people here are very friendly and love to share their favorite places
    2. DO take the sticker off your shirt if you've completed a tour. Tour guides put stickers on so they can tell who is in the group. If you leave it on and walk away from the tour, you've got a target on your forehead that says "I'm a tourist"
    3. DO be aware of how STRONG the drinks are. They can taste like candy, for easy sipping as you stroll through the Quarter. But the drinks here generally have a much higher alcohol content than most people are used to
    4. DO be smart...take the usual precautions you would take in ANY big city. If you do that, you will be fine. New Orleans is no more dangerous for tourists than most large cities
    5. DO eat at places that look "scary" and that you've never heard of. That's where most of the best food is

I got married in St. Louis #3 on Halloween (I live in tremé btw) and I think it’s actually the most New Orleans wedding ever. So my (now) husband is a truck driver and is gone for 6-10weeks at a time we never know when he’ll be home or for how long and So I love Halloween, we’ve been coming to New Orleans for Halloween since we first started dating like 5 years before we moved here (moved here in 2015) and we got engaged on Halloween in the quarter in 2016 and I always wanted to her married in a NOLA cemetery. so we found out he as going to be able to stop home for like 16 hours on Halloween and only had 2 days to plan so we found a minister on thumbtack and then realized all of our friends were either busy with their kids or out of town so we didn’t have any witnesses. So I posted about it on Nextdoor and asked a bunch of strangers in the neighborhood to help out and I got 3 responses right away and I posted the time and location on the nextdoor post and didn’t think anything of it.. so Halloween afternoon we go to the cemetery to meet our 3 witnesses and minister and there were tons of people just kind of standing around and then I overheard someone say “oh im here for the wedding too!” and it turns out that ALL these people were there to be guests at our very quick and very casual wedding despite never meeting us before. Some of them even brought little gifts and stuff. I mean, what’s more New Orleans than that? A bunch of strangers coming together to celebrate the marriage of two other strangers and turning it into a festive, Halloween Second line celebration. But yes, our cemeteries are so beautiful, unique and special. They’re a must if you come to visit. Sorry for the novel. I (just like everyone else I’m sure) am starved for human interaction and I miss the energy of the city and the music and the people so much and I’m trying to think and talk about fun and happy stuff since living in New Orleans has been such a challenge these last few months and with all this negative energy around us and these storms brewing in the gulf I just wanted to share a fun and happy story to remind myself and other people about how special this city and the people of this city are since it’s quite easy to forget these days. Anyway, stay safe friends!

If there are hotels with balcony views of the parade, I'm not much help. Many hotels in the French Quarter are going to have some rooms with outward facing balconies - and they're typically the most expensive. We like the balcony rooms at Four Points, many of which open right out onto Bourbon. It's going to be noisy through the night, but I love it - If I want peace and quiet, I could just stay home!

I think the #1 and most important thing out of all of these things: if you need to take a break or take a photo, please don't stand in the middle of the sidewalk and please be mindful of the people behind you. A lot of people are trying to get to work/appointments practically sprinting and you may be going 1 mile per hour and block the entire sidewalks. The sidewalks are very very narrow.

My crazy father dragged me to Orlando when he was visiting his relatives in Tampa and Miami and wanted to check out the park. Of course, you'd be thinking: why would a teen not want to see DW?! The crowds and the oppressive heat.
It was so crowded that it was impossible to walk without bumping into at least two people. For me, the adult version of Disney is New Orleans. I sooo need to find time to come back here some day. Also, I have a personal reason: I would like to come and pay my respects to my favorite writer: Anne Rice. Her popularity has NOT diminished since her passing. In fact, her book series Lives of the Mayfair Witches is a top TV show on the AMC channel. Born and bred NOLA native here (I left after Katrina, been back a few times since):
*flashing for beads is 99% a tourist thing. Doing things too touristy make you stand out as a mark to predators. Apparently just like Wolter here got pegged as a mark.
*Be careful outside of the the tourist areas as ghettos pop up out of nowhere very quickly.
*cops couldn’t care less about public drinking, but they can be Nazis with weed. They will lock you up for just seeds or paraphernalia (EDIT: I hear this has lessened in recent years, good news)
    * July and August is too hot, LOL🤣😅😂. It’s usually hell hot in December. Only time to go is January- Mardi Gras. It’s the only decent bet to not be hell on earth.
*get a shrimp/oyster poboy from the dirtiest whole in the wall/mom pop place you can find.
*For king cakes I’m a Randazzo’s bakery man. The cakes vary depending on bakery.
*family parades for Mardi Gras are in the suburbs. Do not bring kids to inner city parades.
*If you’re a history nut like me NOLA and the area is loaded with it stuff to check out.
PS: growing up there I always cracked up at the annual local news pleas to the people to be kind to tourist because the economy there is mostly tourism from Bowl season through Mardi Gras. So from around Halloween until Xmas the news daily begs the predators to lay off the tourists for the good of the city.

      KaneneProductions no hoods? Haha.
I still have family down there and it isn’t hard to look up crime stats which haven’t changed significantly. Because of Katrina, an opening was made for exploitative gentrification so many of the former hoods got bought up for change. But the people and class system don’t vanish, it just moves. I’m sure the layout is much different from my day, but there will always be hoods in any city.
“Bias” isn’t defined by simply disagreeing btw.

@@Bo2xpro it sounds like they are betting you that they can guess from whence you purchased your shoes "where you got your shoes", but then they say "you got 'em on your feet". It is common in certain parts of the us to not use "have" when speaking informally. "Hey you got your black dress on!" or "I got my purse right here..." instead of "you have got your black dress on!"/"I've got my purse right here..." or "you got your shoes on your feet"

"I know where you got your shoes". Me: 1. Pretend I don't understand English and speak gibberish. Maybe lick your fingers and then offer to shake their hand. 2. Simply say: "I don't f ing care."

Wow ! You really touched every base, Great stuff ! Here's one for you... I was there years ago on a photography convention, taught photography and worked at the convention then. From New York, I had my Nikon F4 then shooting slide film. A cop stopped me, on Bourbon Street and nicely told me to go back to my hotel and leave that camera behind ! Huh...Then said he just didn't feel like doing a ton of paperwork, on a tourist , and not getting home on time because I was dead, and my camera was gone. From New York...I knew that was from the heart, and it was low key the rest of the night. But not before I got Marie's cript in cemetary 1 alone early morning no tours then and inside the Plantation , No flash, and the paddle boats parked along the Mighty Mississippi ( Chevy Chase ) at 5:30AM...Loved it all...Keep up the videos, come to New York City, been shooting here over 30 years...I'll point, you Talk ....LOL

We drove down from Baton Rouge and found parking very close to the French Quarter. There ARE parking lots, and it's not too expensive. Also wear an LSU hat and the locals will leave you alone.

And the best way to get the "I know where you got those shoes" guys off your back really is to tell them "I'm a local dude, I know that one". That's a solid piece of advice. Just don't be wearing beads and a fanny pack when you say it.

A great piece of advice, AVOID the shot girls. They will push shots on you or say to just have one with them and you will end up paying $40+. Just avoid the people walking around with test tube shots. Also in a lot of places with upstair bars the drinks are cheaper if you go upstairs. Do not let anyone put beads around your neck, they want money. Just tell them you're local and have a ton at home, they will just walk away. Saying "Nah, brah" will convince most anyone that you're local-ish. If all else fails and you must navigate the quarter quickly or alone just walk fast and like you are on a mission, noone will stop you and ask for money or anything.
